balfanman
Did not know where else to place this so I just started a new thread. Feel free to move this if this isn't the proper place. It seems like most are kind of assuming that Angel Sanchez will be the back up infielder on the Major League club this season. I don't know much about him, but I do seem to remember that Robin Ventura really liked Tyler Saladino last spring and I think that he almost made the team. What kind of a chance do Soxtalkers think that Saladino has this year, or is Angel Sanchez simply a better choice?
witesoxfan
Personally, I think Sanchez is a better choice. He runs and can field. Not a lot of bat. That's really all you ask for. Beyond that, you'd hope he'll never be a starter for you. Beyond that, as a Rule V player, he either has to stay with the MLB team or be sent back. Saladino, on the other hand, still has the opportunity to develop into a starting caliber player, even if it's a long shot. With as many options as he has left, there's literally no reason to bring him up and have him sit on the bench.

Also, despite (or maybe partially because of) the fact that RV liked him and kept him in big league camp a little longer last year, he actually sort of struggled last season in transitioning to AA. And there have been disappointing reports on his defense. That signals to me that he's not ready, and that if you bring him up and stick him on the bench, he'll be pretty awful. Agreed with all of this. There were a lot of signs last year that the organization had gotten down on Saladino and at the very least was trying to work with him mentally. There were some long, unexplained benchings.
Princess Dye
2010-2011 Tyler Saladino had its phasers set on extreme tantalize
southsider2k5
Saladino 2 years ago reminds me of Sanchez last year.
NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 7, 2013 -> 04:50 PM) Saladino 2 years ago reminds me of Sanchez last year. I'd say only in terms of hype level and fast moving. They have very different tool sets, and have taken different progressions when taken as a whole career thus far. Even if it does, he's so young that 2 years in AAA would only seem like a failure if the big league team really needed him.
