Seems pretty clear that all it meant was Thigpen being unaware that a position player was being sent to warm up. You're making quite a leap in your assumptions with really nothing there to back it up.

"Hey skip, if we are ever getting blown out and you don't want to waste innings on a bullpen arm, I'd love to come in and pitch an inning or two to save some miles on guys' arms." This is most likely the conversation Wells had with Ventura.
