Balta1701
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 04:43 PM) Hoping for a closer by committee approach. Ride the match-ups and the hot hand. Also would keep Webb/Jones arbitration costs way down. If Webb winds up the closer any time before 2016 the arb costs won't matter much and the team probably won't care because they're certainly not hoping to rebuild for this long
caulfield12
What do we know about this Zach Putnam kid? Anyone seen him pitch this spring? Edited March 24, 2014 by caulfield12
witesoxfan
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 06:29 PM) What do we know about this Zach Putnam kid? Anyone seen him pitch this spring? Haven't seen him, but he has an erratic minor league career and in his cups of coffee, averaged about 91 with the fastball. Does not seem like closer material, though it's still worth noting that I have not seen him pitch.

Then again, with Foulke, Takatsu, Hector Santiago, Tom Gordon (used curve to set up FB)...or Mr. Grilli with the Pirates last season, almost anything is possible. For the record, I'm not stating Putnam is/will be/should be the closer. Veal definitely didn't win over Ventura today if he was on the bubble, although Purcey's also a possibility. If Cleto can keep throwing strikes he should be the closer. Big if ,but would be great to have him save a decent amount by the trade deadline and see what you can get for him. Jones can set up.
