Problem is that the odds are so short that even the trifecta isn't going to pay that much--probably less than $100 even on the $4 bet. It's not unusual to only have 5-7 of the Derby horses running the Preakness, since it's the only time in a horse's career that he will run on that short of rest. The surprise is that there weren't more non-Derby horses entered, like one of the horses that got scratched from the Derby or a top filly that wasn't eligible for the Derby.
