There was a discussion in the game thread about starters. The average MLB team uses 10 starters in a season, as the Sox did last year, per Jeff.

So, other than the CURRENT five, who are your guesses for the other 5-ish who will MAKE A START? I've added a poll too, but here are some names to consider (in order of most likely, IMO)...

Carlos Rodon

Scott Carroll

Chris Beck

Erik Johnson

Brad Penny

Mike Recchia

Frank Montas

Eric Surkamp

Onelki Garcia

Tyler Danish

Montas and Danish are pushing it a bit given their development curve, but hey I could fit 10 in the poll, haha.

The first 5 you listed. Not the second 5.

But I don't think Penny will.

Before June, Carroll. After June, Rodon.

Anything else, it's doubleheaders or injuries I don't want to think about.

Sale- 31

Samardzija- 32

Quintana- 32

Noesi- 30

Danks- 9

Rodon- 20

Beck- 4

Carroll- 3

Johnson- 1

We can come back and laugh at this in September.

I think Scott Carroll is going to get a lot of burn this year. I hope hope hope e. Johnson is useful. My oh my how the teams fortunes would turn if our projected #3 starter last year returns to being a future starter.

I would be shocked if Rodon doesnt become a permanent member of the rotation at some point this year.

If the Sox are in contention, I think Rodon could come up mid-summer in a bullpen role to help acclimate him to the majors and limit his innings for the stretch run, then he could slide into the rotation in August.

Disagree. From what I have seen, not surprised if Rodon is the best pitcher in the organization. If starters continue floundering, I think he will come up much earlier, and I think they will continue to flounder.

I agree first 5. It would be nice if someone out of Beck or Johnson could develop as major league capable.

Per a statistic I read, last year there were 76 relievers in MLB who averaged a K an inning. The Sox had zero relievers (who met the innings threshold) average a K an inning and only 1 overall and that was Cleto.

That and based upon what I've seen so far, I think will see some of the bottom 1/2 in the pen.

But there is young talent on this list and more in the deeper minors, so help is on its way, although it may not be for this year.
