If NOT Cespedes or Upton, can we land 2 tier two guys?

Featured Replies

I really hope today's Gordon signing means things start moving the Sox way re: Cespedes, but in case they don't, can the Sox bring in 2 of 2nd tier OFs? Say they sign both Span and Parra, drop Parra in RF and Span in LF, and move Melky to DH. Figure out the Avi/Laroche thing later.

Or do you sign one 2nd tier OF and go after a starting RHP?

If they do that, I would include Jackson, who can rip lefties and plays good D. I might try to pick him up anyway.

Nor would I be so quick to dispatch Avi. Give him AAA time, but selling low never got anyone anywhere.

This is what i think will happen.

If we dont sign the other two guys they should admit they screwed up and try again during the trade deadline. Seriously for the money the upgrade on some of those guys is marginal if at all.

I agree with this. I wouldn't bother going after Parra or Jackson.

Agreed I don't think the sox are looking for a marginal player to displace are already marginal OFS. One of the big three signing improves the OF significantly by almost a 2 WAR or higher. None of these dudes do that. And forget about Fowler we aren't giving up a pick to the Cubs for Dexter Fowler. The thought itself makes me sick to think about.

If we miss out of Cespedes or Upton, I can see us pivoting our interest to Ian Desmond. Then looking at the possible trades we can make to improve the OF and keep our three top 50 picks to restock the farm.

Desmond costs a draft pick too.

Id be much more comfortable giving a draft pick for Desmond and trading for an OF or standing pat then giving up a pick for Fowler. He has sub par defense and doesn't excite me offensively at all.

Parra and Jackson aren't marginal if platooned. At the very least I would bother getting one of them. They won't cost that much. Doesn't seem to be any market for Jackson - he could be one of those 1 year contract guys. The OF could use the defensive help. Can't go into another year with negative WAR in LF and RF.

July deals come at a premium for 2 months of production. And with the team set up, the Sox will likely be .500ish and in that "Tweener" position, which is no place to be.

I wouldn't waste a draft choice on Desmond or Fowler (yikes!)

One name that hasn't been talked about much is Denard Span. I know he doesn't have much power, but it seems like he'd be a decent OBP guy. How is his defense?

If he's healthy he can play a competent LF for sure. Love his lefty bat and think he would be a good get if we can't land either Yo or Upton.

Has been a great defender historically but it tanked after his injury last year.
