  1. QUOTE(The Critic @ Apr 26, 2007 -> 06:12 PM) QUESTION: Better use of laryngitis - Yoko Ono or Ron Santo? Sometimes Ronnie is entertaining...
  2. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Apr 24, 2007 -> 12:51 AM) I've really dug Kings of Leon lately. Anyway, I was browsing a rap board today during one of my classes and saw a large scale argument battling over who was the better rap group, Wu-Tang Clan or G-Unit? Honestly, I didn't think it would even be a contest, the Wu ain't nothing to F*ck with. But unfortunately, the garbage known as 50 cent has quite the following, any thoughts from the ST boards?
  3. QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 08:42 PM) Pitchfork announced the other two bands to perform albums in their entirety with sonic youth during the pitchfork festival they are: Slint: Spirderland GZA: Liquid Swords Oh god, I will be there, the Genius playing one of the best rap cd's ever, it's a must.
  4. New Arctic Monkeys is absolutely fantastic. Flourescent Adolescent is an excellent song. And I'm just getting into the new NIN record, totally weird story with that whole album but it caught my interest.
  5. I might get flamed for this, but I love the Killers, and they do a really different, but in my opinion, an excellent cover of Romeo and Juliet from Abbey Road Studios, for those of you who like either song or band, it's worth a look... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9VqosFpHe4
  6. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 04:57 PM) Don't tell me that you have to take care of your family and the difference between doing that is $20-$30 million when you're already making $30 million. Unless of course your name is Shawn Kemp.
  7. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) Is longevity what makes a band great? I consider the Libertines great. They were short lived and have spawned numerous bands that I like, Babyshambles, Dirty Pretty Things, etc. I think Sublime fans would say the same. Barely 8 years is a relatively short time in the music industry. Good question though, and I think in some cases, longetivity is a factor in a band's greatness, although, some bands stick around too long and begin producing s***ty music, ie my favorite - Dave Matthews Band. Haven't done a legitamately good album since 2000 when their last session with Steve Lillywhite was leaked. Since then, each album has sucked.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 07:06 PM) I posted relevant responses and submissions from the Peoria tribe. The date of their submission and passing of of a resolution has nothing to do with whatever site was linked, but the one I linked from was uiuc. Their stance has been against the Chief, still awaiting your response on how I was wrong, and still waiting.... My point was, is wrong. There are no more Illini Indians, they've been long gone since before the institution was founded, and if I'm not mistaken the Peoria Tribe was a distant relative of the Illini. Which would be like a brother-in-law fighting the case here. They're not direct blood descendants of the Illini, they are another Indian Tribe located in the Midwest fighting this cause.
  9. QUOTE(CryptviLL @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 06:06 PM) Indeed, good cd, and yes The Roots are very solid. If you like them, allow me to offer you some other excellent choices: J-Live, Nas (he's a must have for any hip hop fan, particularly the cd 'Illmatic'.), Talib Kweli (he's a style similar to Jay-z), Mos def (check youtube for a song "Dollar Day aka Katrina Klap"). If you like those guys and are willing to stray away from mainstream, I suggest anything by Dead Prez, Gangstarr, J Dilla, The Coup, and my favorite white rapper of all time, Atmosphere. He's kinda emo for a rapper, but its good stuff.
  10. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 04:07 PM) Still waiting for your sources. So you post a "retire the chief" site, I post a save the chief site, and somehow they're supposed to be legit responses? Give me a break, yours were probably the first two that came up on your, "anti-chief illiniwek" google search. Basically, if you read your source at all, my response was correct, the man is apparently part of all three tribes, which, if I remember my history correctly, is impossible. You can't be Dakota, Illini, and Peoria. And wow, what a response by Addy. Haha
  11. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 03:03 PM) Im not sorry, I really dont think its that great. As far as being part of a tradition at a University, mine was founded in 1809, there were plenty I took part in. As far as the fact that im wrong. Heres a PDF that can show you who is actually wrong in this case. You might want to start posting informed opinions, instead of just typing. http://www.nah.uiuc.edu/faculty/tyeeme/doc..._resolution.pdf Heres another link showing the illiniwek descendants opposing the Chief. http://www.retirethechief.org/Dialogue/haney.html if you can come up with something more recent that says that they supported the Chief, feel free to post it. Throughout this haney dialogue, he claims that he is a Peoria, an Illiniwek, and a Dakota. Something isn't right there...
  12. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 01:22 PM) Seriously, is it worth crying that much after the fact? Great points for someone's opinion that doesnt matter in this case. Yes, it is worth "crying" over. It was a major part of the tradition at this institution, sorry that you've never been a part of something like this. Wrong.
  13. So I recently picked up my Jay-Z Unplugged album, and I gotta say, it' definitely one of my favorite live albums that I've ever listened to. The Roots really make his beats sound so soulful and the crowd is excellent.
  14. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 06:04 PM) That's a joke. The Wolves are filled with scrubs who can't crack an NHL roster... the Blackhawks would beat them at a man disadvantage for an entire game handily... I'm not saying the Hawks are good, they aren't... but the Wolves are AHL for a reason, and those scrubs suck huge balls combared to NHLers, even the worst of them. Couldn't have said it better. It sickens me when people try to compare the two like this, it's not even close. Perfect example, the Wolves' beloved Steve Maltais. Dominated the I and AHL, was the hero for the Wolves, and a fan favorite. Went up to the show for one last chance with the Blue Jackets and absolutely sucked. It's NO CONTEST. Hell, Havlat alone could single-handedly beat the entire Wolves team.
  15. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 05:17 PM) College sports are nothing without all the tradition and history. Oh and for the record, i think the dotting of the "i" is indeed cool. And i have zero reason to root for OSU. Exactly.
  16. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 01:37 PM) Considering Smith and Carwell are both underage and both were drinking, the source of their alcohol may be in trouble as well. As unfair as it seems, Carwell is underage and was alledgedly drinking, he should get some sort of suspension. No doubt about it. But lenient Bruce will probably say what happened to him is punishment enough...
  17. Anyone at the game hear the crowd boo Jamar when they tried sneakily escorting him to the bench? There was a decent amount of people in my section that did. I don't think it's fair to say those 6 guys or whatever knew of the incident without hearing absolutely everything. I'm not against what anyone's said here, maybe we should clean house or what not, but let's wait until everything comes out. Because I'd heard the same rumors as 101 and while true, there are still some facts people need to get straight. And about abolishing the whole athletic department, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life.
  18. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 09:35 AM) Krush, Steve-O, Dorf, Corn, others, We all know what Chief meant to us, our undergraduate experience, and our UIUC history and pride. There is no real use in trying to convey what we are feeling today to others whom have not had the same collegiate experience. It truly is hard seeing him go. In many respects, he represented our collegiate experience--academics, athletics, student camaraderie, etc. I wish my kids could have experienced their old man's favorite U of I tradition. He was much more than a mascot and all of us know that; today is for us current or former Illinois students, don't let others rain on our parade. I was proud of all Chief represented. Oskee-Wow-Wow For the rest of you guys that go here, watch it again, I've been here for less than a year, but I got chills every halftime. Because that means, when the Chief is out there, the people you sing the Alma Mater with are basically like your family. You are one with them, You are the Illini Nation. I got a bit choked up yesterday, being on the floor for the last Chief performance, and you know what, I get choked up watching it. I grew up watching Illinois sports, and I came here excited to know that we had one of the most storied half times of all time, and now it's being taken away from us. Oh well, all I can say to the people who claim to be offended by Chief, get off your soap box. To those that are here and understand, don't let anyone forget that we at the University of Illinois, were robbed of one of the coolest things in collegiate athletics.
  19. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 09:17 AM) Would you be offended by an all black college using a mascot where a black person painted their face white and danced very stiff and rigid during half time? Probably not at all. But the same people b****ing about the Chief would. The majority of those "offended" by the Chief are white people. Again, the white race, is still around, the Illini Tribe is no longer, so who's offended by this? Go after the Redskins, the Cleveland Indians, the Spokane Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves, Warriors, Squaws, etc. For those of you who seem to be hardheaded on this issue, here are a few facts that I'd like to get opinions on... In the past two years, the only scientific opinion polls on the subject have concluded that the majority of Native Americans are not opposed to the use of Indian nicknames—at the high school or college level, or in professional sports. In 2002, a Peter Harris Research Group poll showed that 81% of Native Americans support the use of Indian nicknames in high school and college sports, and 83% of Native Americans support the use of Indian mascots and symbols in professional sports. The accompanying commentary concluded that the “poll suggests that although Native American activists are virtually united in opposition to the use of Indian nicknames and mascots, the Native American population sees the issue far differently.” In September 2004, the University of Pennsylvania’s National Annenberg Election Survey reported the results of a year-long poll which showed that the vast majority of American Indians say that calling Washington’s professional football team the “Redskins” does not bother them (90% of Indians took that position, while 9% said they found the name “offensive”) Following a 20-month investigation, the decision of the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights (11/30/95) concluded that there was insufficient evidence to show that a racially hostile environment existed at the University. Flame on boys.
  20. Can someone please explain to me how Chief Illiniwek is offensive to an extinct tribe of Native Americans? If he went out hammered and dealt blackjack at center court, wouldn't that be more stereotypical and offensive? Illinois is not the Redskins, Indians, Savages, Braves. They are the Illini, the same as the Seminoles, and the like. Hell, just to prove a point, the Irish Illini in favor of the Chief should start b****ing about Fighting Irish. Maybe get that changed, I'm not of Irish decent, but if White Americans can b**** and pull weight in how offensive the Chief is to Native Americans, shouldn't I, a non-Irish American be able to say how offensive that damn Leprechaun is? Or the fact that the Irish are portrayed as green wearing, fighting drunks? Political Correctness to the extreme like this is ruining America.
  21. I'm a freshman at U of I, and I must say, I was totally unaware of the disdain for our students and extracurriculars on this board.
  22. QUOTE(shipps @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 05:52 AM) Just heard the new Bloc Party.Very dissappointing after having some good expectations cause I loved the last album. But I guess you shouldnt expect much from a band that sounds like crap live. I liked it, and I like their live recordings, so I'm going to see them in Chicago when I'm on spring break.
  23. Unfortunately, the rest of that group of perfomers blows with the exception of John Legend. The Silly Peppers? Please, if I hear Dani California again I'll cut my ears off.
