  1. I don't think playing on the national team is going to be a deciding factor. They left him off of the 2006 WBC roster because he didn't go back to do his optional 4 week military training (in place of the 2 year service). The only thing that could cause him to go back are his family, IMO.
  2. The only reason why I'd want to keep Danks2 over all the other prospects is because as long as he is in the system, our chances of resigning Johnny Danks doesn't get hurt at all.
  3. Jim Edmonds anyone? Yeah, he's old, but the man knows how to hit, is somehow more durable than Quentin, and still plays a decent OF. I'm not saying he'd even be the answer at DH, but at the very least he's an upgrade over both Jones and Kotsay, and is a good backup option just in case Quentin breaks his back while taking a shower.
  4. QUOTE (shakes @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:17 PM) The Diamondbacks had some legitimate concerns about Sherzer. He has very questionable mechanics that have led to shoulder trouble in 2006, 2008, and again in 2009. Many people think he is an injury waiting to happen, and may end up being a late inning reliever. He has also had control problems, and has been inconsistant with his secondary pitches, which have led to him only averaging 5.1 innings per start. He hasn't really put any of that to rest this year, although he has shown he can be dominant for stretches. I'm not sure why the D-Backs wanted Edwin Jackson in that trade, but in the end Ian Kennedy may end up being a better starting pticher than Sherzer. I completely understand the concerns about Sherzer and have expressed the same feelings... however, you don't trade him and Schlereth for Edwin Jackson at his highest value and a mediocre prospect like Ian Kennedy. Thats just dumb. The upside of Scherzer and Schlereth was a lot higher than Jackson and Kennedy.
  5. QUOTE (IceCreamPants @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:12 PM) Well he may be sent back to fight in the Army in a year , right? He can either never return, or they will let him out of the commitment if he can win a gold medal in the Asian Games this Winter (which is a good possibility, South Korea always advances far in the Olympics, WBC, etc). I think if he doesn't win the gold medal, he just will never return to South Korea, at least not as Shin Soo Choo. He had chances to do their special 4 week training services for athletes, but skipped all the opportunities he had.
  6. Speaking of the Indians, I know it will never happen, but thoughts of Shin Soo Choo in RF for us gets me all warm and fuzzy inside.
  7. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 01:39 PM) I still think the Scherzer trade was pretty retarded. Precisely the trade that was on my mind. I have no idea why the D-Backs thought it was a good idea at all to get in on that trade.
  8. Call me crazy, but I'd much rather go after Luke Scott than Dunn. Not saying Dunn isn't the better player, but I think Scott would be the better option for us. He would not cost us nearly as much as Dunn in regards to cash and prospects.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 01:26 PM) The fact that the Dbacks attempted to stockpile pitching with the Haren deal tells you all you need to know about how they're looking at the young but struggling bats on their roster. Too be honest, after that Haren trade (do we know who the PTBNL was yet?), I don't think the D-Backs have any idea what they are doing. They have made a lot of boneheaded moves in the past couple years, IMO.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 01:27 PM) Would you take Figgins as a straight up waiver claim right now? If we were the Yankees, yes... but we don't have the funds to give Figgins 28~ million over the next 3 years. Even when he was at best, I don't think he was worth anything near that.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 01:24 PM) If I were the M's, I wouldn't eat half that contract unless the return was something serious. And hence why we will see Figgins playing in Seattle for at least 1 more season unless they feel his attitude is too much of a problem.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 11:24 AM) White Sox: Kelly Johnson The White Sox seem to be focused on a basher, but it's not really what they need. They need a table-setter. Chicago hits plenty of home runs. The problem is outs; White Sox hitters just don't get on base nearly enough, so they end up hitting solo homer after solo homer. Thus, Johnson fits the Sox in just about every way. For most of his career -- not just in this, a career season he's having for the D-backs -- he's gotten on base at a good clip -- save for his disastrous '09 season that ended his tenure in Atlanta. His left-handed bat would provide much-needed balance in a heavily right-handed Chicago lineup. The Sox's current second baseman, Gordon Beckham, just isn't getting the job done offensively. And it's hard to imagine the Snakes, who traded Haren on Sunday, won't continue to be sellers over the next few days. If in fact the Diamondbacks are going to be sellers between now and Saturday, they have a number of intriguing players to offer. Shortstop Stephen Drew could be a great fit in St. Louis, catcher Miguel Montero has drawn a great deal of interest in the past, and there's reportedly even some interest in reliever Chad Qualls. But Johnson looks like the best fit for the White Sox -- even if it means buying high on a player enjoying a career year. He'd be a significant upgrade at a position of weakness, while also addressing Chicago's largest club-wide offensive issue. In fairness, a player such as Prince Fielder or Adam Dunn would also address the OBP issue for the Sox while simultaneously providing even more power. But Johnson might come cheaper than those players, and his defensive versatility would be a plus as well. Still, it seems the Sox aren't looking at table-setters, but instead at thumpers. "Same list. Same targets," general manager Ken Williams told reporters recently. MLB.COM Pretty sad that they're about 2-3 weeks late in noticing that Gordon Beckham finally heated up...and was playing at a level not requiring a replacement. I'd f***ing love to get Stephen Drew, even if we don't have a spot to play him right now.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 12:57 PM) One thing this team doesn't really need for 2011-2012 is 3B's. Between Teahen, Viciedo and Morel, there really isn't much reason to go get another one, unless they were really good and clearly better than any of those three could be. If they acquire Figgins, it would be to play elsewhere. If we could convince the Mariners to eat over half of his contract, I wouldn't mind having Figgins on the bench as a utility role player.
  14. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 06:48 PM) How about Mark Teahen/Dan Hudson/Jordan Danks for Chone Figgins/Russel Branyan 3b figgins 2b beckham cf rios 1b konerko rf quentin dh branyan ss ramirez c aj p lf pierre carlos torres called up for hudson. HAHAHA, is this a joke?! I wouldn't trade Jordan Danks straight up for Figgins and Branyan. At least Danks is cheap and still has potential... Figgins and Branyan don't add s***. Figgins is expensive and is god awful with the bat this year, and while Branyan would be a slight upgrade at DH, he still sucks and we'd be better off going after someone else. I think Branyan makes us even a worse team, he's just not that good, and I'd pull my hair out if I have to watch him strike out 100 times in the next 2 and 1/2 months.
  15. No surprise about the Cell, but I thought for sure Wrigley Field would be up there in terms of filth.
  16. You're acting like he's a 10 year vet who sucks now. He's had what, 5 total MLB starts? No one is going to deny he needs to pitch better, but its completely ridiculous of you to go on this rant because a young rookie pitcher who is making his 5th or 6th MLB start ever has some struggles. And this doesn't hurt his trade value. It doesn't help, but a team isn't going to all of a sudden lose all interest in him because he is struggling like 90% of rookies do.
  17. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 06:05 PM) I'd much rather platoon Scott and Jones than Kotsay and Jones. I'd much rather see Scott get 99.9% of the playing time over Jones. Jones is god awful with the bat now. It's all or nothing for him, and more nothing than all.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) Anyone stop to think that Sox didn't acquire Haren cause it would have been too much money to have him in the rotation along with the other main 4 next season? Maybe, but KW alluded to trying to get Roy Halladay in the offseason and giving us "one of the best rotations ever" (or said something to that effect). So unless he was just saying that or would have included Danks or Floyd in the deal for Halladay, I doubt the money was the issue. I think KW is going for Dunn or Fielder foremost, and if that backfires, we'll see LaRoche/Scott and a long man like you stated earlier.
  19. QUOTE (Real @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) 4-5 Post ASB. Nice. The sad part was that we SHOULD or COULD have won all but maybe 2 of the games we lost. Only positive after a series like this is that it should give KW more motivation to make a trade for an impact bat.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) You must have missed some of his early season games. Today looked like some of his games from the first 3 months of the season.
  21. Beckham took his stupid pills today... and no Stone, it was not a good idea at all.
  22. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 11:21 AM) Luke Scott and it's not even close. Brad Hawpe's name is also getting thrown out there now. The problem here is that Hawpe is a DH and a DH only. He's no better than Quentin out in RF. I can't say for certain, but I doubt Luke Scott is any better in RF either. And Scott does play at Camden Yards which is a band box in it's own right. However, I like Scott and think he is a good natural hitter who would fit in good, and he can't be any worse than Quentin in RF (and we know he doesn't need to play the field to hit if we move him to DH).
  23. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 05:43 PM) If Trout is in that deal, then I say the Diamondbacks did well. Still. Joe Saunders? It would turn it into a good trade for the D-Backs, but I doubt Trout is the guy. You usually never see a centerpiece of the deal marked as a PTBNL unless they have to do that for bureaucratic reasons (and I don't believe there are any for Trout such as injury, or draft date, etc.).
  24. Is Bobby Jenks our version of old Todd Jones?
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 05:38 PM) The Sox used Gio Gonzales as a PTBNL the first time he was traded...because the Phillies needed to use our 40 man slot to protect him from the rule 5 draft. Ok. I wasnt sure if the PTBNL in that trade was Gio or that other lefty (forget his name, had really good numbers in the minors but wound up doing nothing).
