  1. We have an ace starter, so I think I want a proven college pitcher who can get here quickly and secure a spot in the rotation. Rodon or Nola, please.
  2. Colin Kaepernick got paid: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/colin-k...ugh-2020-060414
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 09:26 AM) Are there any Illini fans here who think the Redskins name has to go but where pretty upset when they dumped the Chief? That was a controversy, but apparently the Chief offended some. My thing is if the Redskins name really does offend, and it does seem to do just that, just change it. What really is gained by keeping it? The Washington DC NFL team isn't going to be any less popular. I think the only problem is where do you draw the line? People will be offended by everything, especially if they know being offended will get some change. I think Redskins and Chief Wahoo are far enough on the wrong side of that line to go away. They are far more offensive IMO than Illinois' Chief or Marquette calling their teams Warriors. This is pretty much me. I think Chief Wahoo is farthest across this line. When I was at Illinois (in the 80's), I felt the same way about some older, cartoonish indian caricatures that you would sometimes still see around. I was very sad to see "The Chief" go, but I understood. I am more pissed about the hypocrisy that deems a horse riding, spear-chucking indian acceptable, but a dancing one "hostile and offensive."
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 09:09 AM) There used to be a high school in North Dakota (many, many Germans and Scandinavians) whose mascot was the Wops. I had never heard anyone use that phrase, but it's still an incredibly derogatory name. They are now the Huskies. Wow, that's pretty hard to believe. I think that may even be worse than Illinois' own Pekin Chinks (now "Dragons"). And FWIW, I don't think "Redskins" can be fairly lumped in with "Indians," "Braves," "Illini," "Seminoles," "Utes," "Sioux," or, for that matter, "Vikings," "Irish" or "Dutchmen." Language evolves, and even if it hasn't always been to the same degree, the term has certainly become pejorative.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 06:01 AM) It's not and it doesn't need to be changed. At one time, this may have been equally true for "Sambo," but most agree that time has passed. Anyway, we all know that Indian idiom and imagery are only racist when dancing is involved.
  6. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 1, 2014 -> 11:00 PM) No more pork chops and applesauce. RIP A. Davis Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.
  7. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 29, 2014 -> 08:16 AM) Given that he didn't play the final 45+ minutes, I'd imagine that's highly likely. I kept seeing Kane skating with Bollig & Handzus and was so confused until I realized he was double shifting because Steeg had been benched. Troy Murray last night was as critical about Versteeg as I have ever heard him, saying he didn't deserve to see the ice the rest of the night.
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 28, 2014 -> 09:31 AM) Vivica Fox Bad deal. He's up to .296.
  9. Um, so who ARE the possible suitors for Gordon Beckham?
  10. The Shark really cannot get a break.
  11. Shaw's still out tonight, but will play Saturday.
  12. Mike Adamle said on the 10:00 NBC5 news last night that the Sox won this game 7 -2. That guy is a total no-mind.
  13. QUOTE (TRU @ May 20, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) I need to get rid of bad stomach fat. I know its mainly due to my poor diet. I eat a lot of junk and constantly drink sodas. I also am not too sure about where all this weight really is. I know I have somewhat of a gut, but I have not noticed any increase in my pant size. I weighed about 205-210 coming out of high school. Right now I am about 230-235. Yet I have a pair of cargo shorts I bought in like 2004 that still fit the same today. So I know my waist isn't whats been getting bigger. I have had P90X for about 4 years now, and have yet to get past 2 weeks of it mainly due to just not wanting to do it. Others here may disagree, but I think cutting out the soda and junk food and running 3 to 5 miles a couple times per week will get you pretty close to where you want to be by themselves, and by late Summer. Programs like P90X will no doubt get you there faster (and take you farther), but if you can't commit to something like that (I don't think I could either), you shouldn't let that stop you altogether. You can always step up to that later.
  14. How is it that the Cubs have "home and home" series with the Yankees this year? I don't ever recalling seeing that in interleague play, apart from the so-called geographic rivalries (CHW v. CHC; NYY v. NYM; STL v. KC). Did this start when Houston moved to the AL and they started scheduling Interleague series every day? Do other teams do this?
  15. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 19, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) And it's not the first time he's done that to a goalie. No, it certainly isn't, and based on that fact alone, its hard to accept that as coincidence. But he was pretty clearly pushed into Craig Anderson and bumped into Fleury, and coming in fast on the breakaway with Price. Nevertheless, I think its apparent he tried to "get his money's worth" out of the contact in those instances, even if the contact itself couldn't exactly be helped.
  16. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ May 19, 2014 -> 12:38 PM) Why do they call Marc Trestman the quarterback whisperer? What they said above. Its a take off from the book and movie "The Horse Whisperer," about a horse trainer.
  17. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 16, 2014 -> 04:31 PM) What year is this? Did last season not happen? Too harsh. Just because we beat his team last year doesn't mean he's not a top goalie, or not capable of taking over a series. He is and he can.
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 16, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) Home Ice and making the team travel to us for the first two is nice. I also really really fear the Ducks. I fear Jonathan Quick the most. Even so, its hard to forego home ice, so for me, that makes it close to a no-brainer. Go Kings.

    2014 Films Thread

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ May 13, 2014 -> 02:26 PM) Most movie franchises get rebooted. Most actors don't want to spend their whole careers playing the same character. Look at James Bond. I'm not sure that's a good example. James Bond wasn't really "rebooted" until Daniel Craig and Casino Royale. Some of the series peripheral cast (M, Q, Moneypenny) stayed the same despite changes in the actor playing 007. Other roles (Blofeld, Felix Leiter) changed even between the Sean Connery films. And Judi Dench played M to both Pierce Brosnan and Danile Craig.
  20. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ May 13, 2014 -> 02:20 PM) He didn't even get a tryout. The situation is sad, yet its hard to feel sorry for him since from what I've read, he's spurned multiple chances to get help. I had heard he was tight with Kyle Long, and thought the Bears might take a flyer. Maybe getting blackballed will turn out to be the best thing for him, in that it helps him "hit bottom" and eventually recover. He is only 21.
  21. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 9, 2014 -> 02:25 PM) Supposedly, Bears had him top 15 on their draft board We're sure he's the rumored guy? Not Jernigan or Nix?
  22. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 9, 2014 -> 02:12 PM) I have a couple of guys that get Bears info semi regularly and they told me that there is some smoke there. They want Hageman. Shocked that he's on the board. It sounds like there is much love for Hageman here, too, although I've heard him repeatedly described as "boom or bust." I'd be happy with him at #51, but leery about giving up picks to take him higher.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 9, 2014 -> 10:41 AM) Yes. Nix and Jernigan would be good options as well. I would be thrilled with one of those 3. Of course, last time I was thrilled with a Bears' top pick was Carimi. This is why my input is rightly confined to message boards.
  24. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ May 9, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) If anyone wonders why the NFL wants to make the draft 5 or 6 days long. Look at the TV rating below. @Ourand_SBJ 1h Overnights: ESPN NFL Draft: 6.8 ESPN2 Blazers-Spurs 2.7 ESPN2 Heat-Nets: 2.6 NFL Net NFL Draft: 1.9 NBCSN Bos-Montreal 1.2 NBCSN Ana-LA: 0.7 Who are these people who watch Chris Berman and Mel Kiper? I'd rather chug acid.
  25. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 9, 2014 -> 08:54 AM) Well it's simply not a reach. And I'm also not calling Bostic a bust at this point. Bostic doesn't need to be a bust to make it a not so great pick (at this point). They needed and had a right to expect more from him than he delivered. And I'm not saying Fuller was really a "reach" (at least how I define it), which was my first strong reaction to both McCllellin and Long. I think he's a legitimate first rounder and solidly in the top 25. I just suspect there were a few better, safer options for the Bears at 14, Pryor and Dennard specifically.
