I need to do a research project for U.S. History. We were given the lyrics to the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel (1989). I chose my 10 topics to cover. They are:

1952- Rocky Marciano

1953- Roy Campanella

1955- Elvis Presley

1955- Disneyland Opening

1959- Mafia Origins

1960- "Psycho" the Movie

1961- The Bay of Pigs Invasion

1962- John Glenn

1964-1989- Watergate and Crack-Cocaine

I need a description about how these topics affect/effected U.S. History. Any help will be appreciated and I thank you in advance.

For extra credit, I need to interview somone who lived through at least 3 of the events listed from the 50's and 60's. Needed information is: Name, Age, Name of Event/Topic, how they learned of the event, what their feelings/reactions were, opinions of others around them, the topics effect on them/family/community/city. Once more, thanks in advance. If you can help me with the extra credit....please PM me. BTW, I need your permission for a whole transcript of the interview.

Holy s***.

My US HIstory teacher showed us the music video to that song like 50 times.

As for you...  asking people over the internet to do your homework

I'm not asking you to do it. I am simply asking for assistance. BTW, never seen the video.

Your teacher picked the wrong Billy Joel song for me to be much help with. Now, if he'd have assigned you Only the Good Die Young I could have told you quite factually that Catholic girls do not "start much too late" as the song would have you believe. :D

But the real Catholic school question is: do patent leather shoes really reflect up?

I'm not sure if I remember this correctly or if it's even true but I read somewhere that the Mafia originated in an anti-French group and that the word Mafia came from Muerte a la Franca.

Ahhhhhh.....useful information. Thanks!

Rocky Marciano beat people up.

Roy Campenella was a catcher.

Elvis shook his hips and liked fried peanut butter and bannana sammiches.

Disneyland gave us big mouse ears and Annette's big boobs.

There is no such thing as the mafia, those guys are all just plumbers and waste management executives.

Thanks to the movie "Psycho" there were a lot of people who went on vacation in the 60's and 70's and refused to take showers.

Hope all that helps you get an A+

I would have failed out of high school if I didn't cheat. I think I speak for nearly 95% of the student body when I say that.

Here's what I got so far:

1952- Rocky Marciano

Rocky Marciano is the only boxer to ever go undefeated in his career. In 1952, he defeated Jersey Joe Walcott to win the title in a 13 round slug-fest. Known as one of the greatest boxers of all time, he is most noted for knocking out Joe Louis, only the 2nd person ever to do so. Undefeated in 49 career bouts, Marciano retired on 1956 after successfully defending his title 6 times.

1953- Roy Campanella

Roy Campanella is known as one of the greatest Dodger players of all-time and quite possibly the best catcher in baseball history. In 1953, he led the Dodgers to the World Series which they won in 1949, 1952, 1953, 1955, and 1956. That season, he set single-season records for catchers with 41 home runs and 142 runs batted in and earned the MVP award that season. His career was tragically cut short after an automobile accident in 1958. His skills revolutionized baseball and the catcher position in general.

1955- Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley is arguably the most controversial music artist in history but possibly the most revolutionary. He started his singing career in 1954 with Sun Records but was sold to RCA Record in 1955. He revolutionarily mixed gospel, pop, rock and roll, country, and R&B all into 1 type of music which captured the hearts of teenage women and adults alike all throughout the 50’s and 60’s. He challenged the social barriers of the time with his dancing and his performances.

1955- Disneyland

In 1952, Walt Disney came up with the idea of a theme park based on Disney characters and cartoons. In 1953, Anaheim, California was selected as the site of the amusement park. With construction lasting about a year, the site finally opened on July 17th, 1955. Almost 30,000 people attended the opening and 9 million watched it happen on TV. July 18th marked the opening to the public with admission only $1. It was a cheap way to have fun all day and it revolutionized family fun and vacations.

1959- California Baseball

1959 marked a big year in baseball history in California. Talk initiated of creating a new team which would become the California Angels which started in 1961. The Dodgers, who moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958, won the World Series in a thrilling 6 game series against the White Sox. Their starting rotation, which included Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax, is known as one of the greatest of all time and they captured the heart of baseball fans throughout the U.S.

1960- “Psycho”

1961- Bay of Pigs Invasion

The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a planned attack by the U.S by Cuban exiles on southern Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the Cuban socialist government of Fidel Castro in 1961. Castro's government had run under General Fulgencio Batista. The invasion occurred on April 15, 1961 when B-26 Bomber planes with Cuban markings bombed four airfields in Cuba. 90 exiles were killed and the rest were captured. The 1,189 captured exiles were sentenced to 30 years for treason. After 1 ½ years of negotiation with the United States, Cuba released the exiles.

1962- John Glenn

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn flew the Mercury-Atlas 6 "Friendship 7" spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the U.S. Launched from Kennedy Space Center; he completed a successful three-orbit mission around the earth. Glenn's "Friendship 7" Mercury spacecraft landed roughly 800 miles southeast of KSC in the area of Grand Turk Island. Mission duration from launch to impact was 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds. U.S. citizens were intrigued by the thought of someone orbiting the earth and being in space so quickly.

1970s- Watergate Scandals

1980s- Crack-Cocaine

Feel free to critique/add.

Bay of Pigs was under Kennedy. My teacher (who I consider one of the best at our school) basically described it as a bad time for Americans, as the Kennedy administration basically denied their involvement in it, and we basically ended up standing there with s*** on our faces.

Psycho was a groundbreaking Hitchcock film because it was a revolutionary film. It was controversial because it was one of the most sexually explicit movies for the time period. It was also one of the most graphic films for the time period and was a very important contribution to the film community at large and the genre of horror movies.

http://www.research.umbc.edu/~landon/Film%...mary_Psycho.htm It has a lot of information about the importance of the movie.
