  1. Landis died in 1944. the color ban was broken in 1946. There is a reason that it took until after Landis' death to do it - he had total power.
  2. the color ban started in the late 1800s with cubbie Cap Anson and continued with the strong support of Landis ... how in the world can FDR be connected with this? The crack circlulating today must be worse than the brown acod at Woodstock. I am not writing in resposne to you, clujer, but in support - not quoting you to disagree, just to further comment
  3. what is really damning is BD in the outfield this season.
  4. Lee has killed the cubs throught the years with hsi bat and did you see BD play right this season? he was a butcvher fielding out there. I cannot agree. CLee has to play.
  5. Royko's long dead but the book is still in print, I think, still available. JFK was extraordinarily popular in Chicago in 1960 - the family connections to Chicago were very strong -

    I Graduated!

technially you did not graduate - graduation is not a thing you can do to yourself - you were graduated - and congratulations! I did not realize you were that young either by your posts - SI1020, you date yourself - 1964 indeed - of course mine was 1965 - my father is moving and lo and behold he still has his ribbons from like 1940 - and I thought they were mine, same colors - have no idea where my ribbons are, probably long gone, but I rememeber thinking I was cock of the roost when I got them - I'll bet a lot of folks have no idea what ribbons are now, I am sure they don't do that anymore - it was the hotest thing to have them though, and of course guys wore them on their pants pocket which i realize now was probably very phallic for adolescent males - but what the hell.
  7. the St Petersburg/Tampa Bay thing was always in my mind just a ploy, not a real threat - others may disagree - so I don't hold that against JR - and what made me happiest about the US Cellular thing is that JR extended the Sox lease at the field for another 15 years or whatever which is the best he can do to keep the team in Chicago after his death we were spared a lot of bad things by not being sold to debartolo, a lot of bad s*** - first off the fact we would have lost them when he moved them

    they came!

the out of towners with cars and taxis and limos will be way up and a full house - the number of Sox fans will be way lower than usual with all the out of towners - so I expect the el to be a peice of cake - is dad single? I could bring my friend's mom who is 78 and rides the el to the park all the time -
  12. been extremely busy, but i been reading this site, more often not have a chance to post as much as i would like. with the way the sox been playing, they hardly given me a reason to post. how can you read and not post????? anyway, hope things are well with you and you can get back to more frequent posting - your insights and opinions are missed!!!!
  13. 1549 - not just what happened on election day in counting votes cast was amiss but far more, the blocking off roads and denying voters the right to vote at the polls, and before that, the puyrge of African Am,erican voters from the voting rolls, many illegally but oops what can you on election day - 60,000 some votes, probably amongst voters who would go 95-5 for Gore, were prevented from voting. That is the most basic theft of the Florida election, not just the counting of the votes cast. Read Mike Royko on Daley (the book is Boss) and the 60 election - it is not what legend says. Anyway, even if Illinois had gone for Nixon, JFK still wins. Just because the vote was late in being announced - downstate Republicans stealing votes right and left to try and steal the election was why the Illinois vote was late, Chicago reported early that evening - doesn't mean Illinois won it for JFK. He could have lost Illinois and he still would have won. Besides, given the family'c close ties with Chicago (Joe Kennedy owning the Merchandise Mart, JFK brother in law being president of the Chicago School Board) and the Irish and Catholic makeup of Chicago in 1960, as a republican child who lived then, let me tell you that JFK swept that ciity like no one ever had. (I since gave up my republican child ways... did that by 68.) I agree with you on pearl harbor. Everyone knew an attack was coming but no one expected it at Pearl Harbor for logistical reasons - the Japanese navy had no clue they really could pull it off - so that was the one place not on alert. Gordon Prange's At Dawn We Slept is definitive here for me, a historian with no bais in the matter.
  14. Jefferson and the Northwest ordinance and the Lousiana Purchase did more to make the government a landowner than anyone else - it was a great plan, setting aside in each township land for the government to own to fund education and local governemnt plus the genius to figure a way to plat all of the new territories - the original of the US government was not, not at all, just for defense. That is not what the Constitution says is the reason for the nation - providing for the national defense is in there, but so are other things - including providing/promoting for the general welfare of the people -
  15. I screwd up the initial post which I have corrected - "our" and "AL" got confused in my mind 2 seasons with us, we loved him - and then he managed us - a really good guy Larry Doby stats
  16. that is sad - AL first black player and our first black manager and a great guy and a great player - this is really sad news

    they came!

Eminem and Opera...hmmm. That is quite a variety. I like Eminem, but Opera...uh well not so much. Actually I like that blind Italian guy, the tenor. Its too bad I don't understand any of his songs. damn language barrier. btw, what do you think of tressels new contract? I am so proud of how we recruited out of Ohio, that I say Tressel is fired before his contract is up, well maybe they will just let him go when it is up. Either way, Michigan will lay a smack down on OSU this season, I can feel it. And I turned your sig picture into my wallpaper. The size readjusted nicely Andrea Bocelli - for opera fans, he is opera lite but a good introduction to the main thing - opera is fantastic, don't need to know the words, just listen for the emotion and when you decide to go to one for real, let me know and I'll suggest some great first operas to see - and some to avoid util you've been to a few - in the meantime, Bocelli is fine to listen to as an intro everyone puts opera down who hasn't gone - it is an unbelivable musical experience - and since they are all about sex, pretty cool, too! tell me again where you are and I'll get the season schedule for your closest decent opera company - I like all music as long as it is good - too many people pigeon hole themselves in one or two genres - give me all of it I accept the compliment of using my sig for your wall paper - I am honored I got tickets for OSU, Purdue, and one non conferance game, forget which - I am a partial seasons ticket holder at UM - I think we may be very, very good this year, maybe better than that. Just depends on Navarre continuing his upward trend on the improvement scale as well as who backs up Chris Perry -- otherwise, we are solid Go Blue!

    they came!

I have no intention of driving for those games -- the el all the way -- a lot of out of towners and a full house - I'll be back at the Rosemont stop, in my car, and home-away-from-home in Glenview before you'd be out of the parking lot. take the el
