The Niners traded up over a month ago, how would they possibly know those guys would still be on the board? Fields went 11 anyways so they would have still missed him had they stayed.

I guess I got confused about where they traded up from. Still, I think going all the way up to 3 was the worst possible value decision. Could have gotten same or equal QB closer to 10.

  2. In the first game, I was out loud complaining that TLR didn't pinch hit for Leury and didn't even finish my sentence before he came through. I get that the Sox never intended for him to be playing this much and injuries happened, but I still think he's out there in place of Vaughn and Madrigal too much. His value is that he is competent at 7 positions while not being a significantly worse hitter than guys like Mendick, Lamb and Hamilton.

As for Cease, I love how Stone said that he was pitching well enough to beat anybody and not just the Tigers. That's one of those things everybody is thinking but nobody actually says out loud. Had me laughing.

  3. Some thoughts:

I didn't think there was any scenario in which I thought I'd be OK with the Bears drafting a QB, but Fields falling to 11 wasn't something I considered. I can be OK with this, only if the Bears get a T/G with their 2nd round pick. Would love Eichenberg but don't think he will still available and clearly the Bears don't have the ammo to trade up again. Cosmi, Mayfield and Banks would be my next tier of guys I'd like to see. There is zero chance Fields can be successful this year without a really good addition at T/G. If the Bears go elsewhere with this pick, then they might as well call 2021 a rebuilding year and let Dalton start. Even with next year's first round pick gone, the positions in the other rounds matter so might as well tank.

Can't believe Owusu-Koramoah is still available. Jags are going to get a Top 20 talent in the 2nd round.

I don't get the Niners trading up to pick Lance when Fields and Jones were still available. Seems very Trubisky-esque.

7 inning DHs seem good for us atm.. we can't cover 9 innings too well.

Sox have +27 run differential in innings 1-7 and -6 in innings 8-9 (as well as -3 in inning 10), so yeah, bring on all the 7 inning games we can get.

Damn it, just got to the bar a bit ago, hoped for a rain delay. Guess I’ll watch hockey and the Cubs and Bulls getting pounded.

I switched over as soon as I heard the Sox game was PPD, saw Hendricks down 6-0 to the Braves in the 2nd, and it took me a minute to figure out that they weren't rerunning a game from last week.

Wow. But a DH should favor us and we should have Robert for both games.

A DH still would have favored the Sox if they'd called the game before fans came and paid for parking and beer. Such a bullshit move.

JAMES MCCANN SIGNED A $40 MILLION CONTRACT. HE IS GONE AND NOT COMING BACK.

You underestimate this franchise's ability to trade for a bad contract a couple years from now.

We all know that we lost the game last night.  I am defending the position of "the manager" being one that is easily second-guessed.

I get where you're coming from, but there is a difference between a manager making a reasonable decision that backfires and the manager being the only one among the 8,000 in attendance and the million watching on TV that doesn't know the pitcher is done.

I get why people are disgusted.  Our best starter going against a lousy opponent.  I almost assume a win.  Managers have decisions of when to pull a pitcher when to pitch hit when to call for a sacrifice bunt, etc.  In 162 games these decisions are made by managers and pretty much overlooked when the team wins.  Managers look stupid when pitch hitters strikeout or the new reliever gets shelled.  My point is...every manager makes fans unhappy some of the time over a long season.  Hine sight always has 20/20 vision.

I thought he should have been out after the 6th, but even if you let him start the 7th there was a pretty bright red flashing light letting you know he was done after the first two batters of the 7th.

Went 0-2 on Castro, failed to put him away with the next 6 pitches and he walked.

Went 0-2 on Baddoo, took 7 more pitches to get him out.

That's a pitcher who has nothing left in the tank. Doesn't matter that he's your ace. Doesn't matter that he's thrown more pitches before.

No excuse, especially since you're only asking the bullpen to get 8 outs after a day off.

Yeah, for as frustrating as our hitting has been with (plug in the name: Moncada, Abreu, Grandal, Leury...), I just saw that we are now 3rd in MLB in AVG, 2nd in OBP, and 5th in OPS. I would never have guessed.

Sox are 20th in ISO, which is why it seems like the offense is worse than it is. The success is being driven by a high AVG and BB total.

Cubs are 3rd in ISO but 11th in OPS. They're hitting almost nothing but homers.

I'd much rather have the high AVG and BB and hope the ISO comes along rather than be maxed out on ISO and having to improve on AVG and BB.

I've been doing it. Through 21 games we're at -9.91 runs from umpiring. I decided to do this because I've followed these accounts for years and have felt like the Sox frequently are at a disadvantage, but wanted to quantify it so that it didn't seem like whining.

Any chance you're tracking all of the teams? Would love to know what percentile that puts the Sox in.

  12. First release of 2020 Census data today. Illinois one of three states to lose population since 2010 and one of seven to lose a Congressional seat. Will be interesting to see how "creative" the state legislature can get in order to get two incumbent Republicans into the same district.

Yep, it's definitely felt like that. I'm not one to cry "the umps are out to get us!" and that's why I suspect it'll all even out in the wash of a full season, but it's been frustrating early on.

If anyone has time to do this, tracking this game by game and seeing what the net +/- is for the season would be interesting.

The Pirates are absolutely horrible, they'll be lucky to win 70 games.

They are horrible but play in a weak division so 70 games should be manageable. No team in that division is going to go 14-5 against them.
