Yeah, for as frustrating as our hitting has been with (plug in the name: Moncada, Abreu, Grandal, Leury...), I just saw that we are now 3rd in MLB in AVG, 2nd in OBP, and 5th in OPS. I would never have guessed.

Sox are 20th in ISO, which is why it seems like the offense is worse than it is. The success is being driven by a high AVG and BB total.

Cubs are 3rd in ISO but 11th in OPS. They're hitting almost nothing but homers.

I'd much rather have the high AVG and BB and hope the ISO comes along rather than be maxed out on ISO and having to improve on AVG and BB.

I've been doing it. Through 21 games we're at -9.91 runs from umpiring. I decided to do this because I've followed these accounts for years and have felt like the Sox frequently are at a disadvantage, but wanted to quantify it so that it didn't seem like whining.

Any chance you're tracking all of the teams? Would love to know what percentile that puts the Sox in.

  3. First release of 2020 Census data today. Illinois one of three states to lose population since 2010 and one of seven to lose a Congressional seat. Will be interesting to see how "creative" the state legislature can get in order to get two incumbent Republicans into the same district.

Yep, it's definitely felt like that. I'm not one to cry "the umps are out to get us!" and that's why I suspect it'll all even out in the wash of a full season, but it's been frustrating early on.

If anyone has time to do this, tracking this game by game and seeing what the net +/- is for the season would be interesting.

The Pirates are absolutely horrible, they'll be lucky to win 70 games.

They are horrible but play in a weak division so 70 games should be manageable. No team in that division is going to go 14-5 against them.

My guess is Madrigal will spend time at leadoff, 2nd and 9th as time progresses.  Nellie Fox was the prototype of a Madrigal batting 2nd and that is where I believe we will eventually settle.

If the Sox didn't already have a guy with great speed who can hit for average and power, Madrigal would be a good guy for the leadoff spot, but that spot belongs to TA as long as he's with the Sox. I wouldn't mind Madrigal batting 2nd vs LHP but Eaton is doing great in that spot vs RHP right now.

There's nothing wrong with having a really good hitter batting 9th. Helps get the lineup turned over more often.

the union will turn some of its focus toward “spending and competitive integrity,”

Don't see how this happens as long as teams get to keep all their own local TV revenue.

the players would like to earn more money earlier in their careers – which could mean changes to the current service-time setup.

What if service time got based on when you are drafted? You start making major league minimum X years after being drafted, become arbitration-eligible Y years after being drafted, reach free agency Z years after being drafted.

On the ownership side, there continues to be a desire to increase the number of playoff teams per season

The problem is that baseball doesn't lend itself to teams having long layoffs due to having a bye. It's hard to find a format for some number of teams between 10 and 16 that doesn't have teams on a bye for too long.

I would check your math on that.  9 guys with a .350-.375 OBP and 27 outs.  How many times on base?

About 13 baserunners per game. Yes, that' s a lot, but it's still only 1 in most innings, and that 1 is never a home run, and in the other innings you mostly getting 0-1 runs with 2 baserunners in an inning. Contact doesn't automatically mean runners advance. There are still flyouts and groundouts that don't advance runners.

I've seen this said many times and I just don't buy it.  I'd put a lineup of 9 Madrigals vs. any lineup in baseball all day long.  On a per game basis, you're looking at at about 12-14 hits, 4-5 walks, and 0 strikeouts.  People don't think that would produce a bunch of runs?

You have to string hits together just to get one run, and 3+ run innings will almost never happen. You can't win in today's game without power.

  10. I think I've said this before. If you have 9 Madrigals in your lineup, you'll have an awful offense. However, having one of them amongst a lineup of powerful free swingers is very useful. When he comes up with runners on base, you have a good chance that he won't kill the rally.

When I saw the title, I was hoping this was one of the annual Bash Jose Threads....he usually heats up after those.

He's a worthless piece of shit who didn't deserve that huge contract.

    Hope that helps.
