7/21 Game Thread - BoSox vs. ChiSox

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 09:23 PM) Carl walk and a PK homer would be nice, but i know it ain't gonna happen. Konerko can't do s*** in the clutch. Save for strike out or pull the ball to the 3rd baseman. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 09:15 PM) Uribe has turned into a massive offensive liability. He's the weak link on this team right now. Konerko is right there with him. Every time Konerko comes up in a key situation he s***s his pants. -

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 08:41 PM) But Yossarian I think it was hit it on the head. They are way too loose on credit, and before you know it, you're over your head and these people just don't give a flying f***, as long as they make their money. That's cause most kids dont pay attention in ECON 101 when they try to drill it into your head that credit is not free money. Then they get out into the world and spend spend spend with no end to it. SIGH

QUOTE(Yossarian @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 05:15 PM) I probably appreciate your service to our country as much as anyone here, but I suggest you check in with some of the non latte drinking, non SUV driving Americans just working their asses off and trying to get by. In the late 90's when things were humming along nicely I had a long discussion with a very successful business man. He did most of the talking, when someone knows more than me about a subject, I try to listen as much as possible. He told me that he didn't think the boom of the 90's had as much to do with emerging technology as it did with the loosening of credit. Since he was mostly in business to lend others money, I had to think long and hard about what he had to say. Credit used to be for emergencies, now to many Americans it is a necessity. 911 made the recession last about twice as long as it should have. Things are greatly improved now, but this will definitely not help. A gradual increase like the Fed does would have been much better, giving people a chance to adust. I'll stop now, because people will get bored, but before you get out the violins and crying towels I would suggest a little in depth research on Post WWII American Economic History. What you say may well be true but I hear and read far too many stories about families with household income north of 6 figures whining about making ends meet. I had to go looking around for an example but last year I briefly had to leave a balance when I took my vacation. For the 2 grand I spent on my trip plus other expenses that month the minimum payment was 44 dollars and my card's interest rate is like 12% annually. If you can't find another 44 dollars in a month then you really need to look at where you're at and think about some lifestyle changes. That goes double if you're forced to spend thousands of dollars more than you're making every month.

QUOTE(Yossarian @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 03:24 PM) That's putting it mildly. I notice in the link there is a survey and 39% of the respondents admitted to a credit card debt of over $5,000. 11% said they were over $20,000 in debt. Maybe this will be a way to burst the housing bubble, as surely this will lead to at least some foreclosures. This is gouging and yes the middle class takes it you know where once again. The middle class wouldn't be taking it anywhere if they lived within their means. Nobody is putting a gun to these people's heads and forcing them to buy that 4 dollar latte every morning or that SUV that costs 70 bucks a week to fill up with gas or have that 992346312451235 inch flat panel TV on the wall.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 11:21 AM) It is a good thing, in the long run, but people are going to get their nuts squashed in the short term. Allowing high interest debt to fester like that is begging for trouble. Priority one should be eliminating it.
-
QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 10:23 AM) I don't know about that, but if you only make the minimum payment, you sure as hell will never pay off the balance. Sure you will..............in about 45 years.
-
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 09:41 AM) Credit Card Payments Going Up Holy s***. Combine this with the new bankruptcy laws going into effect right at the same time, there are some people's ass cheeks gonna be squeezed here. I couldn't care less. I pay my bill in full every month. No wonder my credit score is so high.
-
QUOTE(mreye @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 08:20 AM) While I see your point, Nuke. I think this is worse because it shows the blatant failure of security just 2 weeks after the previous bombings. I disagree. First of all mass transit systems are nearly impossible to seal off and protect because of their wide-open nature. You're always going to have problems stopping attacks like this from a determined group of terrorists unless you want to turn every subway station and bus stop into a mini-airport complete with airport style security. Security services over there did a fantastic job of getting the affected areas evacuated and have already made arrests.

Doesn't look too bad at all. According to CNBC there was only one person hurt and no deaths.

QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 02:47 PM) Please don't take John Kerry, who's obviously rerunning in a doomed campaign for President, too seriously. What he said was "I'm going to do my best to make sure that we ask this guy tough questions and get honest answers." And then, he'll vote for him. Which is the right thing to do. The Democrats need to ask this guy, tough direct questions about his views on the constitutionality of this or that. Only then, if Roberts answers honestly - which he probably will, can anyone really say if the guy is too conservative or just right. The only thing he's ruled on that I really have a problem with is Hamdan v Rumsfeld where he supported the notion of trying foreigners in military courts with fewer rights than Saddam Hussein even has in his own trial. That concerns me. The rest, is the rest. I think Dems also know, if people try to corner him - he will more likely become more Conservative as a result (e.g. Clarence Thomas) Wino. We've been through this before. Military courts are the proper place to try foreign enemy combatants.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 09:20 AM) Could you imagine how much material Rush would have had with a good fight. You are absolutely right. His rating would have gone even higher, I'll bet he and Hannity, Savage, Ingram, and all the many others are crying in their martinis.. By media I mean all forms of media both TV, print and radio. They can all kiss my ass, we've had enough fighting for now.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 09:19 AM) More than abortion, I'd like to hear his opinion on eminent domain if that ever comes up again... I'm sick of hearing about abortion. Seems that people have this knee-jerk reaction when they hear the words "Supreme Court" to think of or talk about Roe vs Wade. There're a lot more issues which are a lot more important to this country than abortion. In my estimation abortion is pretty far down on the list of what's imoportant.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 09:14 AM) And if Clinton nominated Roberts, he would have been portrayed as too liberal. It's all the same stuff. I expected and applaud Bush for nominating someone who is a conservative. That is his right as President, and that is how our system works. I will also applaud the Dems for working hard to assure there are no skeletons in the closet. This person is appointed for life and our system works when both sides take their responsibilities seriously and give 100%. You can almost see the dissappointment in the media that Bush nominated this guy. They wanted someone who was gonna cause a brawl and they didn't get it.
