QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 01:33 PM) I think you have it exactly right, at least as far as I had been taught. JC turned the vengefulness of the OT on its ear when he boiled it down to: love God and love each other. If you are equating homosexuality with adultery, though, you've lost me. Even so, your point that it is not for us to judge is at the heart of the matter. That the gospels do not cite Jesus as ever commenting on homosexuality (as opposed to adultery, for example) suggests that being gay and being accepting of gay community members doesn't keep anybody from being able to love God and each other. I don't think we are to judge... those who say "XYZ activity is going to make you go to hell" are flipping these verses on their ear... we are to love one another... and we are not the judge, only to pass on grace to those who sin. It may be my opinion that XYZ offense is sinful, but I certainly don't condemn that person for their actions or their beliefs. (Except those George Bush haters, because you all are going to hell... because you're judging... ) I keeed I keeed... )

For as much hyperbole as I tend to throw around - what a complete waste of humanity Chertoff would be as an AG. The "inner circle" thing is getting old... it really is.

The topic says it all. Flaxx, Rex, Balta, et. al are going to be in glory bliss today.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 06:14 AM) I couldn't believe my eyes with that Hinske shift or the Cuban Death March v. Boston. I have been very disappointed with Ozzie this year, but he is the least of them all. I will say this, though: if it ever becomes clear that Ozzie has been tuned out, he should be fired immediately, or the players should be (and you know what I mean: meaning: not literally). Some of me thinks that Ozzie simply needs a better team and he isn't trying so hard either. Some of me believes that this team has tuned him out, though a few sources say nonono! to that. Most of me believes that the problems are 95% roster construction, poor scouting and awful coaching. Assuming this team is upgraded next year, we'll see if that's true or not. Very well put.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 08:50 PM) The thing that makes me laugh about this case is that it is conviently glossed over that this woman committed social securty fraud and tax fraud, even if you want to ignore the, at least, two illegal entries into this country. She was convicted of social security fraud for purchasing a stolen social security number, and using that to commit fraud in getting a job. Is that the kind of person we really want in this country? If people are OK with that, please take out a credit card or two, and let me use them directly, instead of going through the problem of stealing it from you. Even if you want to ignore the immigration stuff, she does not deserve to stay here, in my opinion. It's ok, she was just trying to feed her family.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 12:16 PM) Well I don't know about that, obviously we would have needed to hang otno Iguchi and not re-sign Dye. But if Ichiro left as a FA, I think we would have been one of the favorites to sign him, because we had some favorable factors. Like what? I just don't see it. There was no way that we were going to spring for that big of a contract... what am I missing?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 05:50 AM) My counterpoint to this argument is 2 fold. First and foremost...the reality is...even if the U.S. stays there for another 10 years, if we're at the "Soviets in 1982 in Afghanistan" point in this war, eventually we are going to leave. The U.S. has neither the manpower, the political will, nor the resources to spend $5 trillion on this war for the next 10 years and give up another 5000 lives in the process. So the question is...is there any reason to believe, any reason at all to conclude that our staying there will prevent this calamity you describe from happening? Based on the way the situation has currently gone, I see absolutely no reason to think it will. If the U.S. can not occupy this country for 100 years...then if we want to stay...we better have some reason to think it's worth gambling a couple trillion dollars and a few thousand more U.S. lives and another million or two of Iraqi lives on it getting better. And second...this argument makes one presumption; by staying, the U.S. will manage to keep the situation from becoming worse. And on this point also, I see no evidence it's true. Casualties in that country have gone up every single year we've been there, and the "surge" has simply done nothing to stop that. The political situation is simply a disaster and shows signs of getting even worse as every faction prepares for the civil war. And the U.S. is stuck in the middle of it...thus putting a target on every American over there, and giving out free training against Americans to anyone who wants to learn. Yes, it could very well be a calamity if we pull out. But this ignores the reality on the ground right now; it is a calamity there right now, and it's a calamity we're stuck in the middle of...and it's a calamity that no amount of American blood or treasure is going to improve. Now why is THAT? If that part were not the case, things would be a LOT different.

QUOTE(CWSOX45 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 01:12 PM) Ah yes the 5 year grace period. I've heard this before too but I'm not buying it. Hell, look at Yankee fans. They expect a World Series trophy every year. (greedy bastards.) This team went from 90 wins last year to a 90-100 loss season this year. This teams fate was sealed in the off-season when Kenny failed to upgrade our bullpen and sign a better outfielder than Dana Erstad. And that's really all it boils down to. Last season was actually a good season.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 01:45 AM) Yeah he'd be an ideal 4th OF for this team, with his speed etc. In no way should he have a starting job handed to him next season. I mean people bash Podsednik, but he has an OBP better than Owens, so what message are you sendin there if you give Owens a leadoff spot? That's why Ichiro getting re-signed really hurt, he would have been absolutely perfect for this team. There's NO way Ichiro would have come here anyway... that's just plain ridiculous.
-
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 01:06 AM) As of right now, on the bench. At his full potential, a good 8-9 hitter. I was thinking ideally he should be in the 9 spot. Just curious what you thought.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 25, 2007 -> 08:37 PM) It started with the first batter of the season, shockingly enough. At least Buehrle re-signed. Hey wait, didn't that batter hit a leadoff home run right off the get go? (went back and checked... Pablo was the leadoff, hit a double, then Erstad hit a home run - but Grady Sizemore led off the season with an HR for Cleveland). We should have known then when we got a 5 spot put up against us in the top of the first...
-
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 12:50 AM) Which is kinda sad, because A lot of the hate comes from factors Owens can't really control. I know when I look at Owens, I get upset because he is a guy, like you said, that is probably is going to be given the lead-off spot for 08, and that just shouldn't happen. Owens is a guy that could have substantial value to a team, if used right. He is a young, cheap plus defender with speed to burn. They don't grow on trees. However, because of the situation at hand, Jerry has been forced to take on 1 spot in the order, which in turns angers the fans, myself included. What slot do you think he belongs in?

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 25, 2007 -> 08:38 PM) And thank you for highlighting the reason it works - some people actually believe that going into Iraq was part of the war on terror. It wasn't. Of course, it is now, because of the debacle we created over there. So... BushCo creates a stupid, illegal war on a country with no significant terror ties that effect us... they screw up the war in almost every possible way they can... Terrorists seize the opportunity to go after US interests... and so now the only way to be strong on terror is to keep up the charade? Sorry, I'm not falling for it. GMAB. LIES... AAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL LIES! It gets old. Re: the red part, interesting choice of words.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2007 -> 11:53 PM) In my experiences it is usually an move to artificially prop up a sagging stock price. I know history bears out that when a stock experiences a buy back rally, it usually fades right back to where it started at. yea, see TWX for an example.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Aug 25, 2007 -> 06:02 PM) Interesting... How so?

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Aug 25, 2007 -> 04:50 PM) We are close to having the worse record in all of baseball, but we are all still Sox fans and the great thing about baseball is there is always next year. Let me feel the love! B) f***ing Cubs fan. Oh wait... this *IS* the Sox we're talking about! What a s***bag year.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 25, 2007 -> 01:59 AM) Hope you're not complaining, Tony. You do know, of course, about the many possibilities now open to you and your girlfriend in the dark? These sorts of things always cause a baby boom, you know.

QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 08:35 PM) You're not missing it. No one is saying it. Those folks are minding their own business. Proably why it seems like everyone (again... what? 5, 6 high profile morons?) is saying this is a misunderstood race thing. I don't remember names right now but when this first broke, I remember several football players coming out quick to defend him. Then a few more celebs. Then some other morons... I guess the most important question is what do Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton think? Then, and only then, we will have the pulse of the African American community. (And yes, I'm kidding). -

QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 08:22 PM) I think I've seen a lot of the coverage and as I said above JF is maybe the 5th, definitely less than the 10th, person with a public voice I have seen take something like this road, or something similar to it. Most aren't saying anything. Considering the % of "blacks" in the NFL, NBA, and Hollywood... I'd say the pro Vick wagon has a lot of room left on it. Well I guess my coverage has been limited to the "negative" side, or the one saying "they're knockin' the man down because of his color"... I don't watch much TV, so I guess I don't know all the support for him getting nailed. -
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 08:28 PM) Are you serious? There isn't a team out there that wouldn't take Thome on (at least any team that considers themselves in contention and in need of a bat...IE Angels). He's paid for one remaining year and the Sox are going to be paying him under 10M a year (and could obviously send that cash to another team if necessary). He still outproduces a ton of guys making much more than him. I'm thinking from the standpoint of taking the whole contract. I forgot about Philly paying for part of it. I don't know - I just don't think you can get 2 + prospects (meaning ones are for sure going to make the bigs AND be productive) for Jimmy. I agree, I'd like to see him go, but I also realize he probably doesn't want to go anywhere as well.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 08:22 PM) It has nothing to do with negative. I think its stupid to hold onto an aging guy when you can get young talent for him, especially when that aging guy is having more and more injury history. I'm not saying Jim isn't a good player and if the Sox were a piece away I'd say fine, keep him, but they need to get younger and Thome would really help them get some good young talent here (and they still have Dye/Konerko in the middle to help the lineup). Basically put I think given the Sox situation its freaking stupid to still have Thome (and I've been consistent about this). Yea, you have, but who is going to take him and his contract? That would be nobody.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 08:14 PM) Actually, I was optimistic for them prior to 2005, as I loved the AJP and Iguchi signings. Going into last year, I thought they were going to be very good as well. This year....I just didn't think they did enough to improve. okay... they don't call you Mr. Pessimism for nothin'.

QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 07:50 PM) Kap, you are kidding, right? JF is what...? The 5 idiot to state some sort of half assed defense for that douche and that = the african america population as a whole...???? Every time you turn on the tv, the sports and entertainers are jupming up to defend him. Read closer - I said what's being said PUBLICLY (or, those who have the avenue to voice their opinions are definding Vick). I know they don't speak for the whole AA population - but the high profile folks are jumping on the "Vick was railroaded" bandwagon, that's for sure. -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 07:43 PM) I hate to say this, because its sounds so conspiracy-theory and all that... but I really think that part of the problem with the Bullpen this year, and with both Garland and Danks, is AJ. We've heard a lot of rumors swirling around about his attitude, and he does have a history of sometimes getting a bit petty... Look at the fact that most of the new or almost-new pitchers this year - that is, the whole pen other than Jenks, along with Danks and Floyd - and they have all had problems to one extent or the other. Also, Garland, who tends to be laid-back and appears to let the catcher control the pitches, has also struggled. Add to that, if you watch AJ, he isn't moving around behind the plate is much, he looks even more lacksadaisical than previous years, and he seems to constantly call 2 pitches for each pitcher. Guys like Vaz, Jenks and MB have good enough 1 and 2 pitches to get away with it - the others really don't. Just my theory, but I think AJP got really lazy this year. I think he failed to research his new arms, failed to do the homework on hitters and adjust to them as they adjusted to the Sox pitching, and he decided he was annoyed with the team. I am NOT saying that is 100% of the problem with Garland and the pen, but that it is a significant part. Anyone else feel the same way? Yup. And I ain't saying anymore.

QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 07:35 PM) Good grief... AccessHollywood's Shaun Robinson asked Jamie Foxx what he thinks about this matter. Instead of saying "It is what it is", or nothing at all... he said: “It’s a cultural thing, I think. Most brothers didn’t know that, you know. I used to see dogs fighting in the neighborhood all the time. I didn’t know that was Fed time. So, Mike probably just didn’t read his handbook on what not to do as a black star. I know that cruelty to animals is bad, but sometimes people shoot people and kill people and don’t get time. I think in this situation, he really didn’t know the extent of it, so I always give him the benefit of the doubt.” I hate to say it, but this sort of stuff sort of goes with what white was saying earlier in the thread. At least from a publicity standpoint. Most "BROTHERS" didn't know that? Hmmmm.
