QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 01:45 AM) I'd like to see Cotts in to face Koskie now. Last few batters have hit Duque hard, and Koskie's bat speed is perfect for Duque. Which is why Koskie is now 3-for-18 lifetime off of El Duque. You're right. Koskie's bat speed is perfect for El Duque, just not in the way you meant it.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 01:40 AM) Another example of a pitcher not shutting down the other team after we score here? Just like your prediction of the Jays scoring double digits tonight. Wrong!

And 'cause he had a .250-something OBP in about 80 ABs in July at Charlotte...

QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 12:47 AM) can i just ask an honest question.... do you know anything about hockey? i know im an admin and supposed to be a pillar of respect (ok with me thats a stretch)... but i just think your posting without an ounce of knowledge here... its one thing to read a couple things on the net... and its another to actually know what your talking about. Why in gods name would you want Alexi Kovalev? The guy is an absolute tamata can. Agree 100%. Read more, post less. JMHO. -
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 12:53 AM) Pods has to stop with his half-assed swings at the plate. He's 2 for his last 20 now. ...and not walking. He walked something like 23 times in the first two months, and just 15 times since the beginning of June.

QUOTE(ceffa2000 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 11:53 PM) Any credence to Levine saying that Griffey wouldn't accept a trade to the White Sox? Bruce mentioned that Griffey only has 4 teams in his contract and, while he respects the WS org., he wouldn't want to go to us since his house is in Orlando and we train in Tuscon. Apparently Bruce has sources in the Reds org. I thought I read earlier that Griffey WOULD accept to go to the White Sox. I can't imagine why not since he would finally have a chance to play for a WS ring. Sorry to extend the misery of this thread. I realize much of Levine's job is to report what he hears, but didn't he basically say on Friday (before the deadline) that the Sox and Cubs would make any moves? He was sort of right... except for, you know, the Sox trading for Blum, and the Cubs trading for Lawton.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 11:29 PM) Wow. Philly's loaded. LOADED. Barring injury, they're my pick right now to win it all. Kap, you hearing anything on 'bulin? A Canadian radio station had Pang on, and he said that Tallon told him Khabi to the 'Hawks was 90%. Apparantly, he wants to play for an O-6 team. -

QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:40 PM) Think this is strictly a depth/cheap move? I think he'll be a mainstay in the Top 6 for the 'Hawks. Personally, I think it was a value move -- Tallon probably doesn't think the other defensemen are worth what they're going to get, so he made a safe move and got a guy who's not the best of the crop, but who'll do a good job at what he's getting paid. I also think they're trying to put their eggs in the Khabibulin (sp?) basket... And, I'll defer any questions about Spacek to Tom. Uh, Tom? (nudge nudge ) -

QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:48 PM) Um, costing your team in the playoffs faking an injury is a little different than not sliding hard into second. Kovalev let his whole team down in the playoffs. There is no comparison. In this sport, you're supposed to be tough and play through pain, no offense to the baseball players and what not, but this isnt a sport where a contusion sits you for a month. Kovalev actually made me feel embarassed. I've HATED Kovalev ever since he pussied out last year in the playoffs by faking the 'slash' on the wrist, and basically screwed his team over there. Like I said, just the mentor we need for Ruutu and Bell and Bolland, huh? -

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:42 PM) They would need one more standup defenseman, IMO. If they do get that defenseman, I'm 90% sure that they'd be done with defense. They'd then have Aucoin/Vandy/Cully/Mac-cy ( :banghead )/FA, and then let the last spot be fought for between the guys I've mentioned about 1000 times in this thread -- Duncan Keith, Anton Babchuk, and Brent Seabrook. BTW, I'm almost positive that Naslund re-upped with Vancouver, so I don't know why you keep talking about him... One more thing... The Hawks resigned Shawn Thorton. I've always liked him, he's actually decent with the puck (for a fourth liner), and he can fight well. He's a helluva lot better than Travis Moen, too (and I realize he got traded). And, while he's not in that top tier of heavyweights, he can hold his own against just about anyone, and, while we don't have one real good fighter, we have a lot of 'tough' guys -- Ruutu, Bell, Vandermeer, Thorton, and even smaller guys like Nichol and Barnaby have been known to drop 'em. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 05:06 PM) Problem is I'm never gonna be able to see these games. I'll just have to mooch off my best bud whose a huge red wing fan and buys the center ice package or whatever it is. Rumor has it that Center Ice might be free this season. Might. And SF1, WTF are you talking about. Kovalev? Yeah, that's exactly what we need, more soft players to play around Ruutu and (later) Bolland. Good "leadership", huh? :rolly -

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 12:18 AM) They weren't going to get Hatcher and they knew it. That's why they signed Zubov on Sunday for the $ and time they did. You were right, Kap. Looks like Modano will stay in Dallas. I hope the Hawks make their pitch to Forberg/Naslund. I'm not expecting them to get either, but it'd be nice for them to give their best shot at landing 'em. -
Here's how they judge the comps... Scroll up a little bit. They use minor league numbers in their PECOTA system.

Hrdak or whatever on ESPN supposedly said that Modano has made his choice between Boston and Chicago. I'm not thrilled with a four-year deal with Modano; he's already in his mid-30s. But, at least for the first two years of his contract, he'd be a Top-10 center in the league. -
On Baseball Prospectus' "Similarity Index", here are a couple of the notables on the list: -Kris Honel -Brad Penny -Jerome Williams -Mike Wood -Jake Peavy -Adam Wainwright Tom Morgan is his number one comp. He pitched from '51-'63, and had a career ERA+ of 106 (100 being league average for that season). Dan Petry is another comp. He pitched in the '80s, career ERA+ of 102. Ralph Terry, finally, pitched in the 50s-60s, and also had a career ERA+ of 102. So, it seems to me that they (BP) seems to think he'll most likely be a league average pitcher (that being his floor), with the potential (ceiling) to be a pretty damn good #1 (Peavy). I've really enjoyed their free preview, so much so that I'll probably get the year's subscription.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 06:37 PM) Thorton is my favorite player in the league. Him and Nash, if they got him, oh man, I think the Hawk will have won me back. Quite frankly I'm in a debate between the Hawks and the Wings. I've just gotten into hockey (really started to last year) and am tied to the two teams (family and friends are fans of each) and well they have taken to me to some games where I saw both teams. :puke :puke :puke Hop on the 'Hawks bandwagon. Seabrook/Barker/Byfuglian are going to anchor the blueline for years to come, with other youngsters such as Wisniewski (sp?) and Keith ( ) and Babchuk filling the remaining spots. I'm honestly extremely excited at the prospects the Hawks currently have in their system. The core is there -- Ruutu, Bell, Calder, and (maybe) Arny seem to be the forwards they want to build around, and I can't wait to see guys like Dave Bolland and Jack Skille slowly make their way to the big club. -

Now onto the business of a top-line forward -- preferably center. Is Joe Thorton looking for a trade? I thought I'd heard that. He'd look great on a line with Ruutu...
