  1. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 04:18 AM) He used to strike out more than one guy per inning, he doesn't any more. Good enough for you? Great. Isn't good enough for you? Go find another poster to talk to. You said he had a declining K-rate and the stats show you're wrong. Good enough for you? No, probably not, but please, it'd be greatly appreciated if you'd stop talking out of your ass about certain things. I call things like I see them, and when somebody says "so and so has a declining K-rate" and that's not true at all, I'm going to call it. I've done nothing wrong. Did nothing wrong in the last thread that I 'got into it' with you and have done nothing wrong here. Quit whining and if you can't debate, don't try debating. You've been wrong and all I've done is called you on it, only to have you backtrack or use irrelevant trash. Don't come to a gun-fight with a knife, pal.
  2. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 03:52 AM) I just don't think James sets up his teammates well. He was a more well-rounded pg his freshman year. I saw those shots he rimmed out, it will be interesting to see if he keeps shooting with the confidence he showed. As you know, he had no confidence at the end of last year. Agreed, but he also had Steve Novak his freshman year. It's tough to guard James 1-on-1, even moreso when you know you can't sag off your man because if you give him (Novak) an inch, he'll bury a tre. I'm not trying to overrate James, BTW. But he gets a lot of crap that should be tossed at Crean. We didn't have much of a half-court offense last year and as a result, James was forced to take a bunch of 'shot-clock-running-down' type shots where he had to try and create all by himself.
  3. Haha, Khabibulin with two assists and the third star. Neat stuff. Great great game. The Hawks completely dominated. Great to have Marty back.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 03:20 AM) Not even close. J. Jack was a true pg, James is a shooting guard now. Marquette's offense runs better when Acker is creating, at least from when I've been watching. James was fine in Maui outside of Chaminade. The Duke game he was getting to the lane whenever he wanted, he had four or five shots that went in and out. His shot selection was fine, too. His shot looks a lot better this year -- don't know if the stats bear that out. And no, Marquette's offense doesn't run better through Acker. That's silly. Acker is a good bench player, a good backup PG, nothing more.
  5. Also -- what declining K-rate are you talking about? His K/IP the past three years: .67, .64 and .74. Are you looking at a stat sheet or are you just going by your eyes and selective memory here too?
  6. You're gonna wanna check out Sharp's goal -- it was all Kane, Sharp just had to hit an open net. Not a spectacular move by Kane, but some nifty stickhandling.
  7. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 03:19 AM) Let's see ... he pitched in KC last year. No pressure, he did well. 2006, he pitched in Chicago and Boston. Pressure. Not so great, I would even say bad. Now that's just my opinion, so you can throw all the stats around you wish. He didn't get the job done, the job they acquired him to do. Too many implosions. Good year / bad year in my assesment. His declining K numbers send up a red flag to me, in my opinion. I didn't read the Linebrink thread, but in the interest of being fair, I hope you made this same statement about the reliever we just signed to a four year, $20 million deal. How did he "not get the job done" in 2006? Because you watched and that's what your eyes said? Riske was fine as a middle reliever. Nothing great, nothing terrible. We had MacDougal and Thorton that year to set up Jenks, so Riske slotted in perfectly as a 6th inning type. Anecdotal garb like "I know what I saw" is useless to me. I'm not even saying Riske will be better than Linebrink next year. But I also doubt he's going to get anywhere near $20 million, four years and a NTC guaranteed, either. He'll (probably) get paid what he's worth, not overpaid like the Sox did with Linebrink.
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 03:12 AM) Top 10 this year, in no particular order: - CDR - Hansbrough - Gordon - Love - Hendrix - Beasley - Rose - Singletary - Brian Laing - Augustin No Dominic James? I thought you were his biggest fan, Fathom...
  9. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 02:54 AM) Did you watch him pitch for the White Sox, did you see how unreliable he was? Maybe you didn't. Please, I hope you're not going with the "you must not've watched" argument -- I know you didn't like my cursing in the last thread, but you're better than that. The stats bear out that he was perfectly acceptable as a middle reliever. Being a great middle reliever is kind of a... what's the word I'm looking for here -- paradox? If you were really a GREAT middle reliever, you'd probably be a closer. Obviously there are some exceptions. Anyways... Riske has pitched every inning of his career in an AL uniform. ERA obviously isn't a flawless stat for relievers, but since 2003, he's put up ERAs of 2.29, 3.72, 3.10, 3.89, 3.72, 3.93 and 2.45. He pitched 70+ innings in all of those years, except for 2005 (44 IP) and last season (one more out would've given him 70 IP). Is he great? No -- I'd liken him to Luis Vizcaino in that he's a good guy to have pitching your middle innings but not a guy you want to rely on as a closer or late innings guy (although there are a whole lot guys worse than Riske as a set-up man). If he and Linebrink switched situations the last four years... If Riske was the one pitching in Petco while Linebrink was going up against AL Central and AL East hitters, would people still think Linebrink is the better reliever? And you did say "good year/bad year", and didn't show that he had a "bad" year, so...
  10. QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 02:00 AM) I disagree with you, but don't have the energy to argue the whole thing through. But as for Paulie...what about his skill set makes you believe he won't still be a force when he is 37, much like Thome is now? That's dumb as hell. Konerko's best offensive season would be Thome's 9th or 10th best season, making your comparison absolutely brutal. Thome's declining from a HoF quality peak, Konerko will be declining from a pretty-decent player's quality peak. Huge huge difference. If Konerko is our first-baseman when he's 37, we're going to be in a lot of trouble.
  11. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 02:41 AM) Dotel wants to close, that won't happen here. Riske ... good year / bad year. When was Riske's last *bad* year, exactly? 2002?
  12. Great first period. Hopefully we won't see the shell from here on out -- stay aggressive and bury them early. BTW guys, Troy Murray's intermission guest interviews are usually pretty good. Murray's a giggling bastard and he's trying to get through this one with Wizniewski. They're talking about his concussion and having all sorts of laughs, playfully-funny stuff.
  13. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 01:47 AM) How does Mike Patrick still have a job? Are you kidding me? -Mike Patrick
  14. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 01:49 AM) I'm stuck at work, counting down the hours until Friday. God I am loving this team. I've said it before, but we've been spoiled with Kane and Toews so much so that we've (or at least I've) forgotten just how good Havlat is. On his second or third shift after his goal,, he almost had one of his nasty toe drags -- was REAL close to pulling it off but I think the defenseman might've got a poke check in.
  15. First shift. Amazing. It was a 2-on-1. The defender committed all the way to the pass, Havlat skated in to the top of the crease and back-handed it in top shelf. A-f***ing-mazing.
  16. Why won't Renteria be a great bat in the AL? Because he had one bad year for the Red Sox? That ain't faulty logic at all... As far as the Tigers' offensive core being a year older, the same can be said about our offense. Thome probably won't stay healthy for a whole year -- he'll be a force when he is healthy, but he's what, 37? Dye's numbers last season were bad but not awful -- I'd expect him to put up numbers closer to 2005 than 2006 or '07. Konerko had a down year but he's 32 -- he's not going to be a whole lot better than 2007. And there's no comparison between Cabrera and Renteria. The past three years Renteria's OPS+ is about 105, Cabrera's is about 90. Renteria is a much better offensive player.
  17. QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 11:48 PM) Right, that's who we've got, and we are pretty much being discarded as a fourth or fifth place team, while the Tigers are being discussed as one of the best teams in the AL. My point being that the two teams are not all that far apart. But they are far apart. Detroit scored 200 more runs than the Sox did last season. They've added a great bat in Renteria and while Ordonez and Granderson may see some regression, that will be balanced out by massive improvement in LF (just not having Monroe there will do wonders).
  18. QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 10:35 PM) Their staff? They've got Verlander/Bonderman/Miller/Robertson/Durbin? Who does that scare? We've got Buehrle/Vazquez/Contreras/Danks/Floyd -- who does that scare? Their offense also scored 200 more runs than ours did last season and they've added a huge offensive addition in Renteria. You're right, though, I'll heed your advice -- everything's peaches on the Southside.
  19. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 10:04 PM) royals could learn a lot from the twins You mean the Sox, right? The Sox are nowhere near as good as the Twins are as of today. For that to change, the Sox need to improve substantially in CF and LF -- that means no Jerry Owens in either of those spots. And even if we do improve substantially in both spots -- say the ideal situation of landing Andruw Jones and someone like Luke Scott for LF -- we're still behind Cleveland and Detroit. 2008 White Sox Baseball -- Saddle up for a Long Year, Sox Fans!
  20. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 03:04 AM) Dear Marquette, Keep thinking that playing in Maui is the same as Cameron Indoor. And if you guys shoot as well as Duke from beyond 3, I have no doubt that you will kill Wisconsin... You guys have a lot of sharp shooters like that Taylor King right? LOL -- okay, great counter argument. Have fun keeping up with a team that's much MUCH more athletic than your Badgers. Bo will have to be in top form to keep the Badgers in it -- maybe he can orchestrate the refs like Coach K did against MU (27 to 16 fouls). And even then it'll be close. I'm not saying Marquette can't lose at the Kohl Center. Bucky is going to have a b**** of a time scoring without Alando, though. Our guards will handle the Badgers', if we can supress Butch and Wiscy's game in the paint, MU will walk out with a victory.
  21. Dear Bucky -- Thanks for making our four-point loss to Duke look a lot better. Please don't lose before the 8th as we want our win that night to be somewhat meaningful. Thanks again. - Marquette
  22. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 01:00 AM) It was a copy and paste job from Stuy's board In order of how the D has played so far, I would say 1.Sopel 2.Wisniewski 3. Seabrook 4.Keith 5.Vandermeer 6.Byfuglien. I have been unimpressed with Zyuzin, and Maggs has been terrible. He really is brutal. I have really liked what Sopel has brought, and think it was a fantastic sign by Dale. Wiz has also been really steady. Keith started off really slow, but has turned it on in the last few weeks. I am not a huge Vandermeer fan, but he has been decent. I think Buff has been ok, but has turned into a pylon on a few occasions. Love his shot though, great from the point on the PP. That's a pretty quality list. I don't know if I'm intelligent enough about hockey to put one together, but if I were to do it, it would probably look like that. A couple of comments... -Sopel is so calm with the puck. He's also strikes me as an intelligent guy. He's not the quickest or fastest, but he seems like he's always in great positioning. -Keith is interesting. I think his biggest detractors exaggerate his 'badness' and his biggest supporters exaggerate his goodness. True, he does tend to make some dumb turnovers and he may not be a top pairing defenseman, but I don't have too many issues with DK. He's made quite a few plays this season with his footspeed and quickness. On a separate note, for all of you bastards (I use that term with lots of love, fellas ) who have a chance to make it out to the UC tomorrow... I'm completely jealous. Marty Havlat's return, Sharp and Williams back in the lineup, Vinny Lecavalier, Marty St Louis, Brad Richards, Toews, Kane... there's going to be an ass-load of talent on the UC ice tomorrow night.
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 04:20 PM) Yabuta to sign a 2 yr, 6 mil dollar deal with the Royals What an embarrassment. I know these guys probably wanted a shot to close (Kabayashi -- sp -- included), but you're telling me an extra two-three million couldn't change that? Sigh... we're close to being behind the f***ing Royals. That's depressing.
  24. Neat-o, gang -- four more home games added to the TV schedule this season, bringing the total to 11. Thanks Rocky and Mr. McDonough! http://blackhawks.nhl.com/team/app/?servic...rticleid=344635
