Both of these teams are run by monkeys, yes? The Giants are as f***ing stupid as the Bears are. This game is (was) like watching two midgets trying to hump a doorknob (I believe that's from Dodgeball).
-
This loss goes completely on the shoulders of the coaching staff. You win the turnover battle what, 4-0, 5-0, get great field position all day long, score on your opening drive and STILL can't win? What an embarrassment. After tonight, play for the draft pick. We f***ing suck.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 12:04 AM) Can Ron Turner make the O-Line suddenly capable of blocking? The play-calling was f***ing stupid. You don't need great blocking to get four yards on two downs. And f***ing Babich has been playing prevent the whole second half. Can we fire EVERYONE on the coaching staff after this miserable performance?
-
Second-and-four and we can't get a first. Go play in traffic out on Lake Shore Drive, Turner. f***ing stupid...
-
This has been a miserable football game aside from that first drive. The Bears should have buried this team, but Turner's awful play-calling has the Giants down by two points (after this challenge). If they lose this game Turner should be thrown into Lake Michigan.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 10:55 PM) Anyone else get the feeling we'll see "Bad Rex" this half? Not on that throw to end the quarter. What a ball.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 10:23 PM) I also noticed the Pirates DFA'd Josh Phelps who I thought might be a good RH power bat to spell Thome and AJ (career 112 OPS+, .864 OPS career vs. lefties), but I didn't know if he could still catch because he hasn't for several seasons. They DFA'd Josh Phelps? The Sox ought to be all over that, especially if they could find a trading-partner for Konerko. Trade Konerko for your starting LFer/CFer and a couple other useful parts (a reliever and a non-elite prospect) and sign Phelps for first. Sign someone like Mackowiak to platoon with Phelps and you have a platoon that wouldn't be a helluva lot worse than Konerko was last season.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 09:24 PM) who kidnapped Turner... That was a brilliant first drive I don't care what the conditions are like, if the Bears want to win this game (and their next 5) they're going to have to rely on the arm of Grossman. Peterson isn't going win it for you... Throw early. Throw often. Run 4 and 5 wide sets, use Hester, Olsen... Find Haas as the 5th guy. Throw 50 times a game. Throw to open up the running game.... Yep. Adding to that, Peterson doesn't need a lead blocking back. I'd be running two tight-end sets all game. If they feel the need to have a lead blocker they can always motion Olsen into the backfield. It's also good to see Bradley on the field early. I just fear the Bears will now go into a shell. I hope not, but...

Sex Cannon'd. First drive.

As sad is this may seem, a Nady/Owens platoon would be the best LF production we've seen since 2004. If you grab Fukodome or Jones for CF, you're looking at a lineup that would be very tough throughout, no easy outs (unless Richar completely flops). That's not to say it would be a great lineup and I don't think that lineup would be able to carry a back-three rotation of Contreras/Danks/Floyd, but it would be a better-than-league-average group.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 11:49 PM) He was hurt being thrown to the ground by his coach to keep him away from an umpire. Let me repeat that, in case you didn't get it the first time: He was hurt being thrown to the ground by his coach to keep him away from an umpire. Injuries (Erstad, Podsednik) and pre-supposed 'clubhouse' issues (Everett, Pierzynski) have never stopped this team from going after someone they key on. But an injured malcontent? Now we have something... There are far worse options than Bradley. He doesn't figure to get a lot of money so he might be a good one-year option.

BTW -- Dominic James 10-of-15 from the field last night. His shot is looking a lot better and he's getting to the hoop just about any time he wants. That's the best he's played since the Duke game last season. -

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 07:10 PM) I'd consider that a decent sample size. 150 IP? Seriously? That's barely a full season for a starting pitcher. I think enough has been shown that Riske has tended to do worse in more "clutch" (however we want to define that -- late innings, closer leads) situations, but I still think you guys are underrating him. Again, that WXRL stat had him ranked in the 90s. I'm not going to claim that it's a perfect stat, but I'm pretty sure it adjusts for the guys he's facing as well as the situation he's in (I may be wrong there). With 30 teams having six-to-eight men bullpens, Riske seemingly slots in perfectly as a #3 reliever on a perfectly average team. If he's your fourth best reliever, your probably in pretty good shape. If he's your second best (or best) reliever, you're probably in some trouble. Here's what I've been arguing -- or at least I think it's what I've been arguing. We're paying Linebrink 4/$20 to come here and be, for all intents and purposes, our second best reliever, when the signs (peripherals) are showing he may struggle to even be a middle inning type. No -- I wouldn't want the Sox to sign Riske with the expectations that he could come here and be a set-up guy, but I would've rather they'd offer Riske 2/$8-10 (which he may or may not have taken, I'd guess he wouldn't've) or not give anyone that much money in the frst place. My basic issue here is with the principle of giving non-great relievers big money (relative -- when compared to other relievers). There seems to be the thinking that Kenny's logic for building last year's bullpen was poor, and nobody has really shown that it was poor. Sure, the Sox (scouts or Kenny or whoever) may have identified the wrong guys for last year's bullpen, but I have no issue with throwing a lot of good arms/failed starters together and seeing who sticks, especially when they were basically trying to put together the back of the bullpen that way (they thought Jenks - MacDougal - Thorton would be solid -- it obviously wasn't, but I'm not sure anyone could've predicted massive collapses from the latter two).

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 04:32 PM) Some of us used these things called "statistics", showing how certain pitchers did better or worse in certain high-pressure "situations" on the field. Not all of us who point out that certain pitchers don't do well under pressure are just pulling that out of our asses. MacDougal, for example, does poorly in those situations. Its not just a hunch or something. In this thread? In this thread I see crap-ass statistics like "holds" used to show Riske wasn't good under pressure. Like someone could've said -- Hey, Keith, you do know that Scott Linebrink ranked better than David Riske did in WXRL last season, right? -- and I would've been all like, "Damn, no way!" and would've been compelled to look at BP and see that Linebrink did, in fact, rank 59th amongst relievers while Riske, despite his fantastic ERA, ranked 95th. No, instead I get holds and butchered statistics that mean -- frankly -- jack s*** to me. And I see that Riske may sign for 3/$15. No way I would want the Sox to give him that. 3/$12 is kind of even stretching it a bit. Giving more than $4 and more than two years to non-elite relievers is usually dumb anyways.

I saw Frasier fight some guy much bigger than him at the prospects camp. The refs let the two go, but Pully broke up the fight when he came out of his press box and scolded the refs/players for letting the fight go. Very funny to see. He's a pest and if he's got the least bit of talent, he'll be a fine 4th line center.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 01:46 AM) What pressure was that? Santo, you forget that we have certified psychologists on this board who can tell who is "choking", who caves under pressure etc etc. I always seem to forget that too...

This Gumbel is the most boring announcer I've ever heard. I don't want a cheerleader announcing the game but gosh damn. Plus he tries to add color commentary and that makes things worse. He's awful.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 12:38 AM) Im going to save this one. Put them both in a set up role and its not even close. Put Linebrink in US Cellular last season (or for the last four seasons, for that matter) and his numbers ain't going to look so shiny.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 06:42 PM) Are you not the same poster whose critique last night of one of my posts began with the phrase "That's dumb as hell."? Yeah, that was rather obnoxious of me -- I apologize for the unneccesary hostility -- but that wasn't an attack on the poster. I didn't say "You're dumb as hell", I said "that", indicating the argument. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 05:54 PM) Others have amplified my points on Riske so no need to rehash that. However, all your explanations and huff-and-puff blowhard defenses bear out what you show on this website every day ... you've got a bad case of Angry Little Man syndrome. So, Angry Little Man, you might want to chat it up with some college girls to solve that obvious frustration problem of yours. After they inevitably shoot you down, you're on your own. Sucks to be you. Also, mods, can we get a 'personal-attack check' on this post? Maybe it is an attack, maybe it isn't, but can we get a ruling here? And if so, wouldn't this be like the fifth time this happ- Oh wow, clumsy me. I forgot said poster just registered here a couple of months ago. My goodness...

After they inevitably shoot you down, you're on your own. Sucks to be you. Hah, that's wonderful. Your posts... they're soooo reminiscent of this other guy that used to post here. You know, attacking people instead of the debate at hand. I don't seem to recall what happened to that guy. Err... Dots.... connecting.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 02:07 PM) I guess I have to explain this again, the know it all profane college kid doesn't comprehend. You sure you're not like 15? Christ, whine whine whine. And boo-hoo, I called your posts bulls*** -- God forbid a swear! Go to WSI if you don't like swearing. Right, because what he did six years ago holds relevance to next season. Yeah, that makes sense. You're really shining in this thread. My anger? What anger? You're the one who's got his panties in a bunch because (a) you got in a hissy-fit because of swearing (I repeat -- God forbid! Won't somebody think of the children?) and ( B ) you got your facts wrong. Ahh, the typical "you're younger than me", old man argument. So let's see... that's now several red herring and ad hominem arguments you've made. I guess that happens when you don't have a f***ing clue what you're talking about.

QUOTE(MHizzle85 @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 09:30 PM) New Wu-Tang album leaked to the internet on Saturday morning, after a couple of listens i'd give it a 8.75/10. RZA didn't do too bad of a job trying to recreate their early sound. I've heard a few of the songs, they sound pretty decent. I heard the tribute to ODB, it's very well done. In prep of 8 Diagrams, I've been listening to a lot of Fishscale (Ghostface) and Enter the Wutang. Gosh damn those are some phenomenal CDs. I might honestly be more excited for Ghostface's new album than I am for Wutang's.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 05:42 AM) I also don't recall Riske being good at all with the White Sox in 2006. I don't know how he put up good numbers with the White Sox because I was hodling my breath every single time I saw him come in to pitch. I recall him being mediocre to bad. Let me just clarify a few things here: - I'd be lying if I said I felt uber-comfortable when Riske was in the game for the Sox. That being said, he was the Sox' 4th option behind Jenks, MacDougal and Thorton. He was basically the bridge to Thorton and MacDougal, and I doubt you're going to find relievers who have been as consistent as Riske has been over the past several seasons. I also doubt you're going to find many middle relievers who have been as consistent as Riske has been. And I also find it funny that a lot of people seem to want to throw Riske's very good 2007 out the window. Again -- I know ERA isn't perfect, but unless he allowed a s***load of inherited runners to score, he probably would've been the Sox' second best reliever last year. At least we saved a couple million by not offering him arbitration, though. - All I did was correct some factual errors in this thread. A poster said he had a declining K-rate, that's not true. It's not rising but it's certainly not declining. If you want a declining, take a look at the reliever we just gave $20 million guaranteed to. - Stating it again, I don't think Riske is better than Linebrink. Frankly, I don't know and I don't think anyone else knows, either. But I have a hunch that Riske won't command four years guaranteed, a no-trade clause as well as $20 million. And I don't think it's worth it to find out if Linebrink is, in fact, worth it, when most signs are pointing to average-ness-to-mediocrity-to-bad ahead.
