That 'big fish' comment still has me thinking. No, I'm not really thinking about the pun here, but the first two guys I thought about were Crawford and Cabrera. I brought this up at another board. The Devil Rays were absolutely brutal defensively last season, and one spot where they could use a defensive boost is at shortstop. Brendan Harris is completely overmatched (defensively) and isn't a long term candidate to stay there, and maybe Tampa management would like to get a good glove at SS to help the pitchers out a bit. Would they consider a Uribe + $$$ + prospect for Baldelli deal? I'm just looking at 'buy-low' guys. And since I'm spitballing here, I really wish we could see more of 2005 Kenny, the guy who didn't bring in 'names' but brought in quality players. Buying low on Baldelli would qualify. Buying low on Luke Scott would qualify. Heck, I'd even accept overpaying (a bit) for a guy who's not the top CFer on the market (though he probably should be) in Andruw Jones -- although I do understand that he is a 'name' player. Can I dream here? LF Scott/Baldelli SS Cabrera DH Thome 1B Konerko RF Dye CF Jones C Pierzynski 3B Fields 2B Richar That's a quality group, although with Garland now gone, that bullpen is going to have to be 2005 good. Better hope we get Yabuta.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 04:09 PM) It seems dodger fans have a mixed review on Pierre as well. http://www.prosportsdaily.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153121 People seem to fall into 2 camps--those who hate Pierre and those who think he's OK and not as bad as the haters think. Kind of like around here, I fall into the line of thinking of "bushleaguer28". Those against Pierre are represented by "Topace". Blue Zoo seems to say it right. With Pierre, you know what you are basically going to get. With the White sox current roster of hitter, you don't know what you are going to get. Those 200 hits, 60 sb's, and ability to play everyday, might not be a bad option considering what else is out there. Yes, you know what you're going to get -- a bad baseball player. 200 hits -- and 80% of those are going to be singles. His OBP won't top .330, and moving to a tougher league and to a park that won't help him (less OF space), I wouldn't be surprised to see his OBP fall to .320. Those who still live in an age where batting average, RBIs and stolen bases think Pierre is a good player, it's really as simple as that. Those who understand that stats like OBP and SLG% are much more important to how many runs an offense EDIT: I don't know what happened with this sentence here, apparently I didn't feel like completing it. Blah -- my mind is elsewhere today. And again I ask -- who cares if you know what you're going to get? That poster says something along the lines of, 'people shouldn't b**** because Pierre did exactly what he did the past two seasons'. And people with even half a brain knew the moment Pierre signed that deal with the Dodgers that it was an utterly awful deal. Do I hate Pierre? No -- he seems like a real nice guy. He'd be a nice 4th OFer to have too. But why on God's green earth would you want Pierre for anything above the league minimum when we already have one of those guys (Owens) and another guy who is reasonably similar (Ozuna). It completely baffles me that anybody would want Pierre to start for them.

Tomorrow should be a formality for the LSU/OK-State winner. Either team shouldn't have much trouble with Marquette. I'm so sick of the drooling over our defense. I don't give a damn about all the steals, we gave up 60+ points AGAIN. We're wild on defense. Sure we rack up the steals but when you combine the lack of rebounding with the tendency to be overaggressive, you have a very average defensive team. -

I'm completely embarrassed. What a joke of a game. -

Awesome. Our crappy shooting is on display for the whole nation. Take it in, folks. Pack it in, play zone and watch them miss. -
Has the amount of money the Sox are getting been confirmed yet? Or -- asking the question I really want answered -- how many dollars do the Sox finish 'ahead', here?

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 07:06 PM) The only way he ends up at 3rd base is if we trade Fields in package for Miguel Cabrera. If not, Fields will be our 3rd baseman. Funny that you bring that up. I just saw a quote from Kenny, something like... wait, here it is... "We're not done yet. We're still trying to land a big fish," Williams said. Pun intended?

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 03:33 PM) Fun day for College Basketball fans today, games on tv basically all day. Yay! Of course the Garland trade just HAD to come on the opening day of Maui. //shakes angry fist at Kenny -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 06:46 PM) USS Mariner: I'm sorry, but USS Mariner greatly undersells Garland. Garland should be easily replaceable? Really? Can they count for me how many pitchers, over the past three seasons, have pitched 600+ innings of an ERA+ of 110 or better? I agree with some of their points. The Angels seem to strengthen their greatest strength, but, on the other hand, (a)Aybar isn't very good and ( B ) they lose defense with whoever they go with (Izturis, probably?). Garland is an extremely valuable pitcher to have, and we'll miss him dearly. There's not a chance in hell that Gavin Floyd or John Danks or Jack Egbert or Gio Gonzalez replicates Garland's 2007

QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 06:38 PM) Am I the only who think the sox will make a strong push towards re-signing Cabrera before hits free agency? With so few options at SS in the minors, locking Cabrera up for a few years makes sense rather than settling for picks. Though the sox would at least get picks in the event they can't sign him to a deal. Unfortunately -- and I stress 'unfortunately' -- I'd guess this is the route they go. After all, the Sox have who, exactly, who could replace Cabrera in 2009? It sucks, too, as I'd much rather have the two top 100 picks than Cabera's mid-30s seasons.
-
I could be wrong about Cabrera netting two draft picks. Apparenty a poster at SSS said shortstops are grouped with third-basemen and second-basemen -- is this true? In any case I still think the chances are pretty good that -- barring Cabrera falling off the table next season -- Cabrera will be type-A.
-
So -- if Kenny and the Sox choose to make it so, the deal will eventually be... Garland = Cash + one year of Cabrera + two draft picks. Is this where I get painted to be the white-and-black sunglasses wearing, 'everythings turning up roses!' optimist? Whatever. I didn't go apes*** last year for the Freddy G deal when most everyone else was, so...
-
Don't know if this has been mentioned -- forgive me if it already has been, I'm just seeing this -- but my first thought upon seeing this was (and I'm being completely honest here), "Hey, at least Cabrera is likely to be a type-A free agent at year's end while Garland would have to replicate 2005 to be type-A." It's another 'meh' trade from Kenny. Cabrera is a valuable player and when compared to Garland, it seems like they're both of equal value, but I'd much rather see this team get younger, not get another 30-something year old.
-
For those with NCAA 08 and who are playing on Heisman, here's a question that may sound stupid but I'm gonna ask anyways -- how do you tackle? It seems like I can't make an open field tackle. Diving at them usually ends miserably, just running into them (not hitting anything other than literally running into them) usually fails or they don't even attempt to make a tackle, and the hit-stick isn't precise -- it seems like you have to 'anticipate' with the hit stick, meaning there's a delayed reaction -- you hit it and then a half a second later it goes for the knees or for the big hit. I'm also having some trouble in my season -- I'm 4-3 with Northwestern and seemingly can't stop anyone. I also have no pass game whatsoever. Any ideas there?
-
This is rather interesting. I have Brady but I'm also going up against the guy who had Moss. Unfortunately for him, his QB today was McNabb who got about zero total points. I had Larry Fitz to somewhat (not really, but a little bit) heal the wounds that Moss is leaving.
-
At this point, if Kenny and the people around him truly believe Poreda was a bad pick and that his arm may go out at any moment due to his motion, I'd turn him into a reliever and have him on the fast track to the bigs. He can be an effective big league reliever if he is hitting 97 on the gun and spotting it reasonably well. If he learns an even average breaking ball or changeup, he could be really good out of the 'pen. And considering the average value out of the 25th pick in the draft, Poreda turning into a reliever really wouldn't be all that terrible.

QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 11:31 PM) Sexy Playing Tough That was a fantastic ball. Great time for a reverse, Turner. Maybe if you do that earlier in the game and had him running the revers but not getting the ball, it would work, but no. Gosh damn, I think I could call plays better than Turner using Madden 08 and NCAA 08 playbooks.
-
f*** you Moose -- Rex put the ball right on the numbers, and you have the gall to come back to the huddle telling Rex that it wasn't a good ball? Catch the f***ing ball.

f*** you Ron Turner!!!!!!!! How the f*** has this moron not been canned yet? f***ING BRUTAL!

Yeah Ced! Yeah Sex Cannon! Yeah G-Reg!

Bourque is gonna be out 4-6 weeks. That'll mean Bolland will stay up when Havlat returns. If Havlat goes down AGAIN, however, I wonder who's next in the pecking order to make the jump to the NHL. Skille? Brouwer? Kontiola? Even a trade, perhaps?

QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 11:33 AM) Guys who can hit .290+ in the majors don't grow on trees. If anything, Pierre is a healthier version of Pods. All in all that's not too bad. The question is the money. If you pay him $5 mill, that's a lot different than his current deal which does blow. It doesn't matter that he hits .290. His OBP isn't good and his slugging is awful. How can you not see how below average Pierre is? Oh, right, 'cuz his batting average is good. And everyone knows batting average correlates the best with scoring runs, right? Oh, wait. Honestly, I can't think of a dumber move than trading for Pierre. We already HAVE Juan Pierre on this team in Jerry Owens. Why in God's name would we want another one? If this made a damn bit of difference, his OBP would be higher than the .330 that it has sat at the past three seasons. And Pierre is a terrible leadoff hitter. He's a terrible number two hitter. Yes, let's give the most or second most at-bats to a guy who's arguably the worst everyday position player in all of baseball. That's utter brilliance.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 02:45 AM) DePaul barely beat northwestern. I need the headshake smiley back. At least this is supposed to be a "down" year for DePaul. Marquette is struggling with teams that (probably) aren't a whole lot better than Northwestern. I honestly fear Chaminade on Monday. Has the top seed ever lost its opening game at Maui? If not, the stage is set. -
BTW, some GREAT shifts at the end of the game there by Burish/Bolland and Toews/Kane/Ruutu. Those two lines killed off about a minute, minute-and-a-half of clock. Somebody jammed a horseshoe up the Hawks' collective ass last night. This was one of the wierdest hockey games I've ever watched. And echoing Tony's sentiments, what a brilliant performance by Khabibulin. One more thing and I'll go away. It doesn't really need to be said, but Datsyuk's a magician with the puck, and Zetterberg is equally great. That line is so f***ing good, I'm scared every time those three are on the ice.

Unbelievable.
