2008 General Election Discussion Thread

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 01:18 PM) That's just not true. I held my nose and voted for the guy... and I'm the same with McCain at this point, except it's worse - like I might not even vote. Which is sad, because I'm interested in the process, I just can't bring myself to like the guy at all... Have you looked at 3rd party candidates? As much as the media tries to make us think this, it's not a 2 party system. -

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 10:19 AM) They will annonce tomorrow. Betcha. Tuesday is the "big news" day. It might even leak tonight. Obama's in NC on Tuesday evening, Virginia on Wednesday morning. So, he's lingering Virginia area. Might be a hint. My personal guess is he'll want to announce in the evening to get live media coverage in prime time if possible. FYI: Obama vice presidential choice likely this week

Dean calls the Republican party the 'White Party"
HuskyCaucasian replied to EvilMonkey's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 08:32 AM) Dean showing again what we all knew. He's good at putting together strategies, which have helped the Dem party raise such strong ground games at the grass roots level lately. But he's terrible in front of a camera. That's a good description. I agree with that. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) You're a scientist? I'm actually a bit of a quantum theory geek. I find it fascinating! I couldn't start spouting detailed information, but I've read at least 3 books on quantum theory. I'm not great at giving nearly as detailed an explanation as you did, but I can look at ti and say that's pretty much what I've read and studied in the past.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 05:48 PM) The idea behind this is, as I understand it from my physicist cousin, that you don't meet force with force. You don't propel matter through space in current state to those speeds. You instead open an envelope or slot, using multidimensionality or bent/curved space, which is externally so thin that it has near-zero resistance. Internally, you travel interdimensionally, so you don't have g-forces like you'd think of. When trying to project matter to the speed of light in previous attempts, at some speed like half light (or less), using a Gauss field or similar, the matter degenerates into something like what Trekkies would call plasma. (this is where one of the scientists on Soxtalk can inform me that I am misunderstanding the whole thing) That is about right.

I think of all the questions, Obama NAILED the stem cell question. I used to be against stem cell research until about 6 months ago or so. Then I heard that the stem cells were coming from embryos that were about to be "thrown out" (a fact interestingly left out by most anti-stem cell groups). I had never heard that before. And I thought, "wait, so it's better to just throw them out then use them for good?" If stem cells research is so bad, shouldn't in vitro fertilization be protested by pro-life groups? I knew Obama was pro-stem cell, but I've never heard that same opinion out of him before. -
QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 06:50 AM) This is so f***ing cool.I just cant see a human body being able to withstand that kind of force though. see, that's the thing. If I understand correctly, you aren't actually moving. Space is moving around YOU. I'm not sure there would be any force on you,

On A Side Note: Trekkies Will Lose a Starbase I am saddened. I always wanted to go there, but never had the chance to get out to Las Vegas.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 07:44 PM) well he bs'd that answer. i guarantee he nominates a liberal Democrat to the supreme court. My policy on the supreme court is to keep it balanced and even. Since it's an odd number of people, it'll tip one way or another depending on the president. There is never such a thing as a complete fair court. People bring in their own beliefs and biases. So, I would be in favor of 4 "liberal", 4 "conservative", and a swing judge. I absolutely dont believe in "Activist" courts that are so heavily tilted in one direction that the minority is largely ignored. -

QUOTE (juddling @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 10:53 PM) the other was 96 percent from an opossum, according to Curt Nelson, a scientist at the University of Minnesota who performed the DNA analysis. A possum is pretty far from bigfoot on the evolutionary scale.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 01:33 PM) Hey, seriously, get me a black and white Obama clip like that. I promise, I'll give equal time. I have a good idea. *snicker*. with or without calvin peeing?

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 12:44 PM) http://www.gallup.com/poll/109564/Gallup-D...ma-Tied-44.aspx looks like we're in for another close election. But it is still early. Gallup is a VERY finicky poll. It's interesting, but that's about it. It was pointed out a while back by someone on MSNBC that typically Obama gets a "weekend bounce" that jumps him to a 5 point lead by midweek, then it declines as the weekend approaches.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 12:38 PM) Hmm, that could be a tactical error. The book will only sell better now and get more media attention (as will the 'issues' contained in the book). I disagree to an extent. This rebuttal is targeted at the media. Basically they are saying, "before you start to say this as fact... here's some real research that proves these facts wrong."

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:44 AM) (where's that Calvin whizzing all over your post icon)? OH! That gives me an idea!!

McCain really is short minded or just plain stupid. First McCain said Iraq was the first major conflict after 9/11... forgeting about Afghanistan. Now, "My friends, we have reached a crisis, the first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War. This is an act of aggression."

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 04:57 PM) Just remember...every time we see discussion of this guy's book on TV...they're talking about a smear book written by a guy who buys in to the 9/11 conspiracy theories. That's credibility for you. The kind that our media just laps up. This is great A Lie from the book: “The year 1995 was a banner one for Obama. He had just married Michelle and the couple bought a Hyde Park condo, the first home Obama ever owned.”[p 145] Reality: 10/3/92 Obama And Michelle Robinson Were Married. [Chicago Sun-Times, 10/3/07] 1993 Obama Bought a Condo for $277,550. [Chicago Sun-Times, 1/22/06] The guy cant even get a marriage date right. Checking Wikipedia sure would have been easy. ---------------------------------------------- A Lie From the Book: “Senator Obama could claim to be a citizen of Kenya, as well as of the United States. Obama can trace his heritage back to his mother, who was born in the United States and was an American citizen when he was born, and to his father, who was born in Kenya and was a Kenyan citizen when Obama was born.” [p 103] REALITY: OBAMA CANNOT CLAIM KENYAN CITIZENSHIP Kenya Does Not Allow Dual Citizenship Applications for People Over 21 Years of Age. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management writes of Kenya, “DUAL CITIZENSHIP: Not recognized except for persons under 21 years old.” The Kenyan Constitution writes, “A person who, but for the proviso to section 87 (1), would be a citizen of Kenya by virtue of that subsection shall be entitled, upon making application before the specified date in such manner as may be prescribed by or under an Act of Parliament, to be registered as a citizen of Kenya: Provided that a person who has not attained the age of twenty-one years (other than a woman who is or has been married) may not himself make an application under this subsection, but an application may be made on his behalf by his parent or guardian.” [u.S. Office of Personnel Management; Kenyan Constitution] Even if Obama Had Applied for Dual Citizenship Before He Was 21—Which He Did Not—It Would Have Expired. ”A person who, upon the attainment of the age of twenty-one years, is a citizen of Kenya and also a citizen of some other country other than Kenya shall, subject to subsection (7), cease to be a citizen of Kenya upon the specified date unless he has renounced his citizenship of that other country, taken the oath of allegiance and, in the case of a person who was born outside Kenya, made and registered such declaration of his intentions concerning residence as may be prescribed by or under an Act of Parliament.” [Kenyan Constitution]
