  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:50 PM) The answer simply is yes. Lovie has been with this team for 9 years. Emery has been there with one. KC actually has quite a bit of talent especially on the defensive side, as did Atlanta. He was also a scout on the bears prior to 2004, and which were the bears best drafts. But instead you want to give the most important position on a football team to a guy who has never scouted or has any idea how to deal with contracts and budgeting. Great idea. In Atlanta Emery was scout from 2004-2008, 2008 is when they drafted Ryan. Dimitroff was the GM, Emery was gone that year. He (Emery) is credited for Roddy White. Lets talk facts, Falcons: 2004- 11-6, 2005- 8-8, 2006- 7-9, 2007- 4-12, 2008- 11-5 Chiefs: 2008- 2-14, 2009- 4-12, 2010- 10-6, 2011- 7-9, 2012- 2-14 Those were some great teams. The part I bolded is just nonsense. I never suggested that Lovie should negotiate contracts, I would not suggest Emery should negotiate contracts. Neither of them are qualified. Emery has been a GM for 1 year, prior to that he was a scout. He is not an attorney, he is not an executive. Maybe his 16 years of strength and conditioning coach made him qualified, but you are not making a very strong argument. The coach, the person who is actually going to use the players, should have a good amount of say in what players are being brought to the team. It makes no sense to have a coach and GM who are not on the same page. Which is why you need to 1) have a GM who is Caesar or 2) have a coach who is Caesar. I do not think Emery has the experience or the pedigree to be a Caesar GM, which means you need to find a coach to be 1. Since the Bears were already paying Lovie, and could always get another guy like Emery, the Bears should have tried something this year, because it made no sense to hire a GM, tell him he cant fire the coach for 1 year. That is just stupid.
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:44 PM) How about the Falcons? Emery seems to have had a hand setting them up pretty nicely Emery's last draft with the Falcons was Matt Ryan. He was instrumental in picking Roddy White, but I think most people give credit to Dimitroff.
  3. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:39 PM) He went 10-6 this year. How many more wins should the Bears had this year given all the problems on the offensive side and all the injuries all over the team? Last year, your star QB went down when the team was riding high. Their backup QBs couldn't do much because they had no offensive line to protect them, just like Campbell this year. The one constant has been the lack of addressing the offensive line. No matter what type of league you play in, no matter how the game changes, you still win the battle on the offensive and defensive lines, period. Cutler has almost been killed And this is why I cant understand Emery as getting a complete pass. In what world did the Bears need a DE tweener in the first round? Drafting an OL in the 1st could have made a significant difference. Outside of Jeffrey his draft was just brutal. I am not a huge Lovie fan, but outside of the Seattle fg, I also cant recall a time where I really felt he screwed the team. Most of this year was on the players.
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:39 PM) I agree...I think the Chiefs are closer than people think. They are as close as 50% of the NFL, need a good qb. The Chiefs problem is that they keep picking crappy ones and this year should be pretty horrific for finding a QB.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:31 PM) Giving coaches personnel power just rarely works out. Lovie never seemed very adept at scouting. Phil Emery was hired to put together the best team possible, but had to keep the coach from previous regime. It should be no surprise what happened. Based on the 2012 draft why do you feel comfortable with Emery putting together a good team? Or is it based on how great KC is, the team he was director of scouting for? Because with the Bears all he did was draft Jeffrey, the rest of the picks so far are pretty brutal. We will never know whether Lovie could have handled player personnel, what we do know is that the Bears are now being run by a guy who put together the talent for KC, and I am not holding my breathe that they will make the playoffs anytime soon.
  6. The part that makes no sense is that the Bears are basically giving Emery the keys to the castle when he has much less experience than Lovie. If anything I would have thought the Bears should have given Lovie more power (after getting rid of Angelo) and seeing if that actually made a difference. Instead they got a new GM, said he cant fire Lovie for 1 year and you have a clusterf*** from the start. That is the ultimate problem for the Bears. They have no clue what they are doing in the front office. Lovie had to be the longest tenured coach with the least amount of power. I cant imagine that Lovie wanted McClellan in the 1st. The Bears need 1 person to steer the ship and everyone else to follow directions. 2 generals with equal power does not work, the Romans found this out at the Battle of Cannae in 216 BC. Yet almost 2000 years later the Bears are still mucking it up.
  7. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:11 PM) Mike Tice must of promoted himself to OC. Mike Martz also hired himself. Babich hired himself as well. Herein lies the problem, who is running the ship for the Bears? Did Lovie want those guys, or did the GM? I am nervous the Bears will mess this up.
  8. A lot of college rumors today due to NFL openings. Ferentz to Chiefs is being talked about on Wisconsin boards. Penn State's O'Brien could go to the Pros. Also a rumor that Wisconsin will play Alabama in Jerry World 2015.

    2012 TV Thread

QUOTE (danman31 @ Dec 25, 2012 -> 10:45 PM) Interesting Doctor Who episode tonight. I'm intrigued as always. Anyone else watch? I am really liking Oswin. I thought it would be hard to replace Pond, like it was with Rose, but Im thinking Oswin may do the trick.
  10. Got a 55 inch samsung, its really large in my apartment. Probably slightly to big but oh well I guess Ill have to grow into it.
  11. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 10:51 AM) Do you really feel that it's worse for innocent people to be killed by guns than it is more a greater number of people to be killed by drunk drivers? In my view an innocent being killed is an innocent person being killed. I really don't care about how it happened. I care more about reasonable way to try to decrease them. Ptatc youve been making good points through out this thread. The problem with guns versus drunk driving, is that if you drunk drive you broke the law and therefore you can be subject to punishment. Conversely, if you are on the street and you fire your weapon in self-defense, and it ends up killing someone, you arguably have broken no law. I think we both agree that we want to stop innocent people being killed, its just how do we legislate against accidental shootings, if under current laws there is arguably nothing against the law? That is why handgun bans etc are useful tools, they allow people to be charged with a crime if someone innocent is harmed. I am always a proponent of punishing the person who did something wrong, as opposed to punishing society for the wrongdoings of individuals.
  12. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 11:15 PM) I don't see how you can even knock a sure fire one and done for going to Kentucky at this point? I wouldnt, but you could theoretically argue that its smarter to go to a better school because you never know if youll get a catastrophic injury. That is obviously within reason, Duke will be on national tv as much as anyone. I dislike Duke, Id never go there, but I still cant find a reason why its a bad choice.
  13. I think what matters is that Duke is better than MSU. Im not about to be drawn into an ACC who is the best school match. Feel free to consult US News, Princeton Review or any of those nonsensical publications. Duke is a fine choice. I dont even like Duke, but I understand why someone would go there.
  14. I got an end of the world party tomorrow. I am not planning on the world actually ending.
  15. Duke is a powerhouse basketball program. They are going to be on TV as much as any other major program. Its not like he chose Yale.
  16. That may or may not be true. But its one thing to knock a kid for going to Kentucky, its another to knock someone going to Duke, Stanford, etc. Those top notch schools and it would make total sense for a kid like Jabari to actually care about education.
  17. Duke is a solid school, really no way to argue against that choice. If something happens to him, Duke education is worth way more than MSU.
  18. For the fun of it was meant to imply that she did not need the money at all. I think the article listed marital problems as well, but it was more about the fact she did not need the money.
  19. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/suz...hamilton-136952 Interesting story about a former olympian becoming a prostitute just for the fun of it.
  20. Ive actually never been called a troll on a message board before. Thankfully got that off my bucket list before the world ends on Friday.
  21. Most people are hypocritical, get used to it. Why cant I have hookers, drugs and gambling? It goes both ways. (edit) Which is why this argument bores me, because its basically playing chess against myself. Although I do truly believe that less guns more drugs is a better society. Go figure.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:56 PM) I kind of can't believe that you are surprised that Wisconsin pulled a coach from Utah State. Nobody dreams about coaching at Utah State. Every coach is looking for a job at a top tier school in one of the 3 stable conferences in the country. It be more surprising if he had stayed at Utah St. People thought Andersen was going to be like Petersen (Boise St.). He has never coached outside of Utah, he has allegedly turned down HC offers at Cal and another school. He also stated that he would not be leaving Utah State. The reason I said that about rankings, is that Dick Allen kept talking about records and rankings, and how that meant everything. I was joking that Wisconsin hired a coach who did better than Bielema this season. Whether or not he actually continues that success at Wisconsin, who knows. But I think most Wisconsin fans are pretty excited. The guy is bringing most of his staff and has seemingly been rated very well as a recruiter. Its just an odd feeling as a Wisconsin football fan. I have never experienced a coaching search. (edit) Rock, Im leaving work so didnt have to really respond, I will more later. But I am not arguing that you can use spread principles in other formations. I was just saying that the reason the spread was created was for little guys to have a chance against big guys. Whether or not it works for big guys is a different argument all together.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 03:35 PM) I disagree. The basics of the spread offense were originated with super powerhouse teams like Notre Dame and Navy in the early 1900's. It was then modified even in the modern times by powerhouses like Nebraska and Oklahoma in the 80's and even Houston in the 60's. Nowadays its a mix of run n shoot and the basics of those triple option teams into wht DickRod and Snyder deployed but its roots were way back when big time teams were using it. Now some of the pass-heavy spreads were probably designed for mid level teams to even out the playing field since it negates a weakness on the O-line and perhaps speed in space, but the basic spread is a modified triple option run-oriented offense. My opinion of where that modern-day spread originated was for sure Randy Walker at Northwestern. In that case it was definitely designed to enhance your 1 or 2 advantages with built in counters and constraint plays. My team runs the power-run oriented spread offense with some of the hurry up from Oregon and the pass-counters of those NW teams. I can show video of running plays this season that are directly out of the very early Notre Dame days. Then we disagree. Notre Dame under Rockne used to have 3 rbs in the backfield, which is the opposite of the spread. Nebraska ran the triple option, which had a fb/rb in backfield, which is also not a spread. You would have to show me some evidence, because the teams you are talking about always had TE's and used multiple rb's in the backfield. Rockne used the "T" formation, which is about as unspread as you can go. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 03:52 PM) They may be technically rated higher than Wisconsin, but the 3 seasons prior, Utah State has a record of 15-22 in the WAC. That is what happens when you take over a team that won 2 games in 2007 and 3 games in 2008. In the last 2 years, hes 18-8 and has not lost by more than 10 points to any opponent. You never know what will happen, but his team should have won @ Wisconsin this year. Which isnt bad.
  24. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 03:49 PM) Making a defense because the defense is available in law =/= legalization of murder, no matter how many times you try this argument. Not it just creates an unnecessary complication that most people find redundant. You already have the right to use deadly force if your live is being threatened. The last thing we need is more laws being written by legislators who have no idea what they are doing.
  25. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 03:05 PM) Are you saying this just because they had to hire so late in a tough year to hire coaches? Or in general? In general. I just would not have imagined that the next Wisconsin coach would come from a team that is technically rated higher than Wisconsin right now. I figured they would either get a guy from the Pros or a coach on a team that has been meandering.
