Official 2011-2012 NCAA Football Thread

You really cant blame Wisconsin for the Big10 scheduling. Im sure that Wisconsin would have much preferred a schedule where they dont play @ MSU, @ OSU in back to back weeks, as well as @ Ill (arguably 3 of Wisconsin's 4 toughest games will be on the road this year.) So there is a downside to an easy opening schedule in conference play. I do agree that Wisconsin hasnt proved anything on the road, but I also think Wilson is a lot more talented than people realized. -

Dont worry Rock according to MSU fans they are going to beat Wisconsin without Gholston. -
Sounds like Perry is going to go with a flat tax pitch, not sure how thatll fly with the masses. Even Adam Smith in Wealth of Nations proposed a progressive tax as necessary. Book V, Chapter II, Part II (Of Taxes) V.2.24- V.2.25 http://www.econlib.org/library/Smith/smWN21.html#V.2.25 V.2.24 "Before I enter upon the examination of particular taxes, it is necessary to premise the four following maxims with regard to taxes in general. V.2.25 I. The subjects of every state ought to contribute towards the support of the government, as nearly as possible, in proportion to their respective abilities; that is, in proportion to the revenue which they respectively enjoy under the protection of the state. The expence of government to the individuals of a great nation is like the expence of management to the joint tenants of a great estate, who are all obliged to contribute in proportion to their respective interests in the estate. In the observation or neglect of this maxim consists what is called the equality or inequality of taxation. Every tax, it must be observed once for all, which falls finally upon one only of the three sorts of revenue above mentioned, is necessarily unequal in so far as it does not affect the other two. In the following examination of different taxes I shall seldom take much further notice of this sort of inequality, but shall, in most cases, confine my observations to that inequality which is occasioned by a particular tax falling unequally even upon that particular sort of private revenue which is affected by it. I just cant believe how hard these candidates are trying to alienate average people.

The Wisconsin chant is a remnant of when Wisconsin was terrible. Before Alvarez came to Wisconsin, their football team was brutal. Thus because they couldnt really chant at the other team, they came up with chants amongst the students. Basically student sections are at war with O and P being the biggest rivalry(or were when I went there). Eat s*** f*** you is chanted between the student sections. Its definitely juvenile, but if you want it to stop, the best way is to not to make it an issue. And for the record, I meant "Why is it news" in terms of the school/media making it seem like this just happened. As for the tradition, Wisconsin games are fun, but definitely not for everyone. -

How is it news? "Eat s*** f*** you" has been going on longer than "Jump Around". http://badgerherald.com/news/2007/11/09/ke...t_thank_you.php In this article it says Alvarez asked the students to stop in 2002. -

2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
Soxbadger replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
The owners can cure the breach. Once the players start a new league, how can they cure the breach, absent folding the new league. Plus the players belong to a union. As soon as it became apparent that the players were leaving, the other players would vote to agree with the NBA and the NBA is back. There wont be a competitive league, unless it starts with NCAA players and players not in the NBA. -

Soxbadger replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Im not really familiar with collective bargaining, so Im not even going to pretend that I know whether or not a lock out voids or suspends the contracts. I dont have the contracts, so i cant read them. Just because they can play in China or Europe, does not mean that the contract doesnt say "Cant compete in USA while locked out." No one would really know unless they had copies of the CBA and copies of the player contracts. Furthermore you are talking about starting a new league. If the new league starts, and the owners stop the lock out, would they not be immediately in breach? That is the problem, unless you have the actual contracts in your hands, you just cant guess. And its probably not worth it to any investor to take these risks, unless they hire a bunch of attorneys. Its just not as simple as you are trying to make it. -
The question is, will the Republicans try and buy him on the 9-9-9 plan. If you make it absurd hes probably dead in the water, but if you make it seem at all legitimate, its catchy and in a crowded field its something people will remember. I dont think hed do well in a national election, he is not polished enough. Democrats may be apathetic to a Romney, but Cain is going to rile people up.

Before anyone starts talking about a new league, they are going to need to hire a bunch of attorneys to try and figure out if the players would be in breach of their playing contracts. Im just guessing here, but I cant really imagine a NBA contract not having a clause that explicitly forbids them from playing in a competitive league. But maybe the attorneys are stupid, but if they are smart there is a liquidated damages clause that states that if the player plays in a competitive league while under contract the damages are equal to the players salary. Once again I dont have the contracts, but I really doubt its as easy as finding new investors and starting a league. -

What Angelo did should surprise no one. He was with the Bucs before the Bears, teams that had great defenses, but lost due to offense. Hes a bad gm, just most of his problems are self inflicted. -

Steve, The point I was making is that if anything Angelo has killed the team by trading high draft picks for marginal returns. People are just overrating the success rate of 3rd round or worse picks. -

Steve, Check other teams success rates. They may be marginally better, but the reality is the Bears problem is not having high draft picks. Since 2006 the Bears have had 3 1st round picks and 5 2nd round picks. In comparison the Patriots have had: 4 1st round picks and 11 2nd round picks. Packers have had 6 1st round picks and 8 2nd round pcks. Bears- 8 1st and 2nd round picks Patriots- 15 1st and 2nd round picks Packers- 14 1st and 2nd round picks I dont care if your Bill Walsh, you are going to have a tough time with that few 1st and 2nd rounders. (edit) The problem is the Bears are averaging basically 1 player in the 1st/2nd per year, where as better teams are averaging over 2 per year. Thats a big difference and helps keep your team young. I only said Angelo was okay, not that he was good or even average, just that he did pick Forte and a big hit like that should make up for a lot of misses. -

Steve, Angelo is okay at drafting, his problem is that either he gets it right or completely misses. You can live with that as long as you supplant your team with free agents. -

Sproles doesnt play WR, he is a running back. The better comparison for Hester is Percy Harvin, a player who in College really didnt have a set position and now in the pros is trying to be mainly a WR (Hester has it even harder as he wasnt really an offensive player for the Hurricanes.) That being said, the Bears could be more creative in getting Hester the ball. There is nothing that says he cant line up in the back field (unless Hester cant grasp the playbook, but if thats the case he shouldnt start at WR). As for Lovie being above average, above average coaches dont make the mistakes Lovie does. I guess my problem is that Lovie isnt clever. If there is something the Bears can take advantage of while the game is going on, Lovie just doesnt seem to catch it. If I was the owner Id strongly consider firing a coach for the FG debacle. -

He doesnt look like an average coach this year. 15 seconds left, its a simple understanding of time and football. If you run a play for a touchdown, lets say it only takes 5 seconds, thats 10 seconds left. An onside kick lets say that takes 3 seconds. Now there is 7 seconds left, you have to throw a hail mary anyway, unless your hoping for a penalty and then kicking a field goal. Its as if he just wanted to make it close. Not to mention passing on a field goal. Just bad. -

Forte is the more natural running back and with the Bears oline there is a good chance the running back is going to need to win a 1 on 1 battle. At first I thought the Bears were actually clever. It was a close field goal so try and entice Detroit offsides, if you dont get it take the 5 yard penalty. Unfortunately they took a time out, then burned another on a replay. Its just losing your cool under pressure Rock, You can have shotgun with max protection (detroit was mainly bringing 4). The bottom line is that you have to protect Cutler, then worry about completing the pass or running a creative route. You cant just hope hes going to have time. -

Rock, But he knows the Oline is bad, its the coaches job to come up with situations to help the weaker parts of the team. This play calling was just bad, and Martz is Lovies guy.
