Bruce Levine (guest host on Mariotti)
Pasqua's Mailman replied to JDsDirtySox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Listening to Mariotti talk baseball with Levine makes it even more obvious how totally clueless Mariotti is about baseball. -

Mariotti getting called out by Levine for being an idiot... It doesn't take much but it is hillarious... -

By not trading, the sox show fans to fuck off

I agree... it doesn't have to be Floyd or Kendall... it just needs to be somebody that will something to the everyday lineup. Right now there are too many "outs" in the batting order. One more credible bat (maybe a Batista or Cattalano (sp?) would help this lineup tremendously. -

Unfortunately, I tend to agree with the orginal poster's assement. Look, if Mags and Frank were both healthy, then I would agree that it wouldn't be a big deal if KW stood pat. But with both of them injured things are different. To compete, we need another bat. If KW doesn't add one, we have to hope one of several guys (like Borchard or Perez or Uribe etc) steps it up big time. As much as I hate to say it, I don't like those odds. I am all for trading prospects. The vast majority of them turn out to be busts and when that happens you lose twice: once when it turns out that the prospect blows and again when you don't make the playoffs because who refused to give up a prospect in order to obtain a bat that your lineup desperately needs. We still have until tomorrow, so hopefully KW is working the phones. This season is riding on what he is able to accomplish over the next 20 hours. -
I'm right there with you. If Sweeney turns out to be as good in the future as Floyd is now, the Sox may have something. Even then its a long-shot.
-
So what people are saying here is that they would rather do nothing and hope a team with serious offensive problems turns it around. What many of you are basically saying is that you would prefer to throw-away the season in order to keep a 19-year-old prospect. Boy, Sweeney better turn out to be the next Tony Gwynn. I, for one, am sick of waiting for next year.... this is ridiculous. Trade the god-damn prospects and bring in guys that can play now! Most prospects are 80% hype, 20% substance anyway. This is still a very winable division, but not with the lineup as it is currently constituted.
-
I just checked Sweeney's numbers in AA and he is hitting .281-5-50. Those are decent numbers but nothing overwhelming. Look, he might be a decent prospect, but he is clearly 2-3 years away from contributing at the major league level. We are talking about a franchise here that desperately needs an upgrade in the offense if they are going to win this year. If they do nothing, I fear we are looking at another wasted and underachieving year. If you want to win now you make this deal and figure out the rest later. Its not like the Sox have done a whole lot of winning the last 30 years and I think most fans wouldn't mind temporarly depeleting the farm system if it means getting to the playoffs. Besides, the farm system will be restocked in two years (did the Sox have a huge draft this year?)
-
If its Floyd, do the deal.... With all do respect to Sweeney, prospects like this are a dime a dozen. Next year there will be another guy coming along "that we just can't trade." Look, this team hasn't won a home playoff game since 1959! I am sick of waiting for next year and I am equally sick of holding on to "can't miss prospects" at the expense of winning now only to find the prospects are more like Scot Ruffcorn than Mags Ordonez. Do the deal.
-
I am so sick of Joe Crede.... he has no clue up at the plate. In that situation you take some pitches or sit on a fastball. You don't hack the first bender you see. What an idiot. Between him and Jose I don't know who I want to see less of. Probably Jose but its close.
-
Yeah, as if those .160 slow 1B bring a lot to the table. If we are thinking of strictly veteran leadership, why not bring in Scott Brosius? He's a veteran that has won some titles. Bringing in veteran strictly for leadership is ridiculous. If someone like Olerud has something left fine, if not take a pass. This team has a ton of veterans already. We don't need another one that can't hit... we already have Ben Davis. Now that would really be a dip s*** move.
-
Veteran leadership only really matters if you have something to add in terms of production. And production is something that Olerud has been lacking this year. I am not a big Borchard fan but if your only alternative is Olerud then you're better off with Borchard. At least then you can find out once and for all what you have.
-
[borchard isn't ready, Olerud atleast can hit better than .180 ] Not really.... since June 17, Olerud hit .169. I would take my chances with Borchard than bring in this re-tred.
-
Then you trade him. The answer still isn't Olerud. The guy gives you virtually nothing. In fact, I doubt he would provide much more than Borchard.
-
Adding Olerud makes no sense. If you do that, you might as well say that Borchard sucks. Borchard's best side if lefty... if you want to bring in an established left-handed hitter fine. Just bring in a good one with something left in the tank. That is not Olerud.

Not sure if anyone heard Len Pasqorelli (sp?) or not on ESPN Radio (ironically enough) but he had an interesting take on the whole Johnson saga. He basically came out and said that most of the Johnson to the Yankees stuff was generated by the Yankees. He claims that the Yankees just don't have what it takes to make a deal like that either straight up or three-way. As for Boston, he didn't see that happening either for some of the same reasons but also because Johnson is not a big fan of Schilling. The one team in the best position (again according to Pasqorelli) is Anaheim. No mention of the Sox. Concluded that the Diamondbacks really don't want to trade him and would have to be faced with a deal that they couldn't refuse before they pulled the trigger.
-
I agree that the Sox have virtually no shot at acquiring RJ, but I find ESPN in general a very untrustworthy source for trade rumours. As I recall they had Garcia all but traded to the Yankees before the Sox got him. I really don't remember the Sox even being mentioned as a potential destination for him. ESPN has strong ties to the Northeast and their bias shows when these rumours come up. A better source are the local web sites.

We need a left handed bat, and if all they are giving up is Rauch and a low-level minor leaguer, I have no problem. Rauch has shown nothing at the major league level. Everett is probably a mid-level replacement: he will cost less than a Walker and/or Beltran and will provide more punch than either McGriff or Olerud. Of course, that assumes that he is only DHing.

Minnesota up 8-0.
-
Sure, now Showey starts to get guys out. He is the Sammy Sosa of pitchers. How about when it mattered?
-
Can anyone recall the last time Burke pulled the ball? I mean pulled the ball hard.
-
Jaime Burke sucks. Does he have pictures of Ozzie humping a dog or something?
-
Was Lee's HR on Sunday the last time the Sox hit the ball hard for a base hit?
-
Watching this Royals/Twins game.... the Royals without Sweeney really resemble last year's Tigers team. Which means the Sox will probably split the season series with them.
-
Can we catch a break? Seriously.... this is unbelievable.
