  1. QUOTE (qwerty @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 06:31 AM) The list should completely have with who is type A, who is type B, and who isn't anything. I'm sure it would be beneficial for many here. Happy?
  2. His OPS was right around .900 when his hamstring started bothering him last year (about 250 PA into his season, beginning of August), it turned out to be a strain and he spent 15 days on the DL because of it. He was having a hell of a year as a part time player before his hamstring started acting up.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 02:13 PM) If this is viewed as a bench signing, I wonder who the last OF target really is. It is a great gamble here. At worst he costs us basically the same thing that a call up from the minors does. At best, he is great. Dewayne Wise made $550K last year.
  4. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) If this keeps up, we are a lock to win the 2001 World Series Not sure what he has left, but for 500k you can always cut him if hes real bad. Hopefully hes no more than a power bat off the bench Is he still any good defensively in the outfield?? It's hard to say. He didn't really play the field last year and he was just an out and out bust with the Dodgers but his UZR numbers with the Braves even in his last year with them in 2007 were super elite. I doubt he's great out there, probably serviceable.
  5. I do like to hear this from Kenny. Now sign Henry Blanco to complete the oldest bench in baseball, not that I have a problem with it since each player does posses at least 1 valuable skill.
  6. Kenny's getting all his guys. Any other free agents that Kenny's been linked to in the past? He was supposedly on the verge of signing Vizquel before he chose the Giants and he nearly traded Magglio for Jones, what? 6 years ago?
  7. As long as they're not planning on plugging him into the lineup. That'd be disappointing to say the least.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) B&B just said there's breaking news on the Sox...I think it might have something to do with Crisp. He'd be a good pickup and considering how little guaranteed money he'll receive you can still look for a leadoff hitting OF who's a better bet for 2010, Crisp would make a great 4th OF.
  9. You get the comp picks automatically, you don't have to offer arbitration as a formality.
  10. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 11:37 PM) How many 2+ time MVPs have never made the hall of fame? I would guess not many, if any at all. 29 multiple winners, your non-hall of famers: Dale Murphy, Roger Maris, Juan Gonzalez (how many people would have guessed that?), Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds. Pujols and Thomas are the other 2 but they'll be getting in as of now but these things are known to change.
  11. It's November f***ing 24th, nothing has even happened yet.
  12. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 08:34 PM) I was refuting Jason's stance that Baines rarely played the outfield. When you're only being considered for the hall of fame because you played 22 years and 15 of those years you were incapable of playing the field that qualifies as 'rarely playing the field'. There's also a rather large difference between 25% and 50%
  13. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 08:18 PM) Baines played 1,059 games in the outfield, 1,046 as a DH by age 36. Rice played 1,543 games in the OF and 530 as DH by the same age. That's only three seasons worth of games different as DH. There's a tremendous difference in how they accumulated those games. Rice split time between LF and DH for the first 5 years of his career largely because the Red Sox had more talented outfielders than spots to play them by the time he hit age 26 he was a full time leftfielder. Harold Baines was a DH for the final 15 years of his career because he was no longer capable of playing the outfield everyday.
  14. Griffey was not a better pure hitter than Frank Thomas. HR hitter? Sure but that's about it. Barry Bonds was the best hitter of the '90's.
  15. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 06:32 PM) coco/pods are about the same type of player; over 30, can't steal more than 30 base without getting caught 15+, no power, aweful arms. I'd rather bring back Pods or SPEND SOME MONEY and get somebody GOOD. 30 years old isn't over 30, Crisp does have a consistently better ISO than Pods, Crisp stole 28 bases with 6 CS in '07, 13 SB and 2 CS in 50 games last year and has an 81% SB% since '06 and he's actually capable of playing above average defense.
  16. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 07:28 PM) Each year that they've been on the 40 and not made the 25, it's used up an option. That's what keeps teams from putting a Rule V eligible player on the 40 man roster and leaving him in AAA for the next 10 years. The system is designed to give players a chance to play and keep teams from hording away guys that they have no use for. 4 or 5 years in the minors until you're Rule V eligible 3 years on the 40 man roster without making the 25 man 6 years on the 25 man before free agency so 13 or 14 years of waiting for your chance before you can go out and find work
  17. I just saw that Ryan Howard finished 3rd in MVP voting and Chase Utley was no where to be found (Ethier, Derrek Lee and Tulowitzki all got 2nd place votes, no Utley). I can't decide if Utley is more underrated or if Howard is more overrated. It's amazing how incredibly dominant Chase Utley can be and at the same time get no love.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:37 PM) How does arm strength fit into that UZR stat? Rios I'd say has been slightly better in CF but it does sorta vary. It doesn't actively account for arm strength.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:32 PM) I would hate this signing if it meant moving Rios to RF. The only chance for Rios to be worth his salary is if he provides 280 with 25 homers while playing center field. Not to mention the fact that Crisp's lack of arm strength makes him a poor fit for CF. He'd have to play left with Quentin moving to right.
  20. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) Crisp for Dye. That seems like a good switch. Crisp for Podsednik, Rios for Dye.
  21. QUOTE (Ranger @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:06 PM) That said, this wouldn't be the most exciting move if they made it. I suspect they desire better than that. You'd hope though just last year our starting CF and leadoffman was DeWayne Wise so anything is possible.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) Garcia = 5, and he's well backed up by Hudson. Anyway...the top 4 is better than I see anyone in baseball having, on paper. With Hudson returning and Hanson getting a full season in the majors I might take my chances with Atlanta.
  23. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:08 PM) By ability: 1. Rivera 2. Soria 3. Papelbon 4. Nathan 5. Street 6. Broxton 7. Hoffman 8. Jenks 9. Bell 10. Capps No K-Rod, huh? Seems a bit odd. Obviously it's a bit flawed because some of these guys haven't been full time closers over the past 3 years but anyway: Ranked by FIP (fielding independent pitching) over the past 3 seasons: Broxton: 2.27 Papelbon: 2.45 Rivera: 2.45 Bell: 2.68 Nathan: 2.71 Soria: 2.77 Saito: 2.91 Cordero: 3.01 Street: 3.04 Hoffman: 3.08 Wilson: 3.15 K Rod: 3.25 Qualls: 3.26 Jenks: 3.37 Valverde: 3.53 Capps: 3.63 Lidge: 3.77
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 03:39 PM) Well my point was that that's a lineup built to win a mediocre division and not a championship. Anything can happen in the playoffs especially when you have incredible starting pitching. That '05 offense wasn't very good. With that said, this team needs to bring in a legitimately BIG bat in order for me to feel comfortable about their chances in 2010, there's just no sure thing in our lineup.
