Why do you still watch the Sox?
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 09:12 AM) Frankly I don't really watch much anymore. Read the box scores and shake my head. Same here. I haven't watched a full game in about two months. I still love the Sox, follow them closely online, and visit this site several times a day, but I have more fun ways to spend my evenings than watching them lose meaningless games. Maybe I'll have them on TV as background noise while I'm on the computer or something, but that's about it. If that makes me less of a fan in some people's eyes, so be it.

Are wins overrated as a pitching stat?
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 02:01 AM) There is no doubt it is misleading, and in that sense it's a perfect comparison. I guess that angle I was taking is that there is no offensive stat that can possibly compare to wins in terms of awfulness. *cough* RBIs *cough* And, yeah, W-L records are all but meaningless. Jeff Suppan has the same amount of wins as Johan Santana. I will grant that a pitcher's offense behind him tends to even out over the course a career- you can't luck your way to 300 wins. Still, that doesn't mean much, because there's a ton of way better statistics that can be used to judge a pitcher's career. They could completely do away with keeping track of pitchers' W-L records and I wouldn't complain. Batting average is another stat that needs to be mentioned. It isn't nearly as worthless as RBIs or pitcher's W-L records, but it's vastly overrated. Placido Polanco hit .295 last year, but walked a grand total of seventeen times and had a mere 23 extra base hits. Adam Dunn hit .234 last year, but walked a whopping 112 times and had 64 extra-base hits, forty of which were homers. Who is more valuable? The answer is Adam Dunn, by more than 150 OPS points. But if you were to look at their batting averages, you'd get a different idea. And this is not a statistic, but I also hate it on TV how they say stuff like "the hitter is four for seven lifetime against this pitcher," as if seven at-bats means something.

I know this won't happen but.....
This team is old and declining fast. We have a barren farm system. A firesale needs to happen if we want to compete any time soon. If we're going to suck the next two or three years, it may as well be with developing prospects than aging, overpriced veterans. I would really like to know what better plan you guys have.

Erstad vs. Aramis Ramirez
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 12:05 PM) ..and yet somehow the results aren't a complete landslide. You're working on a group project with a classmate. You get to choose between: the kid stays home on Saturdays, spends 6 hour a night on homework, and gets straight C's, or the lazy guy who doesn't study much, goes out and parties on the weekend , but is a straight A honor student. I'm going with the second guy. Results > effort I'm confused. The second guy would be the Ramirez-type player. I agree with you. Results > effort. Edit: Never mind. I read your post in the wrong tone.

Erstad vs. Aramis Ramirez
This has to be a joke topic. You're asking us to choose between a guy with a .900 OPS and a guy with a .650 OPS.
