  1. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 11, 2006 -> 11:58 PM) I don't really think so. I think both were pretty much not so valuable. We got Timo cause the Mets saved like 1 mill and we got Cintron cause the Dbacks saved like 1.6 mill. Neither Baj or Ginter would get you much at the time. Ginter would have been the more highly touted one though (higher draft pick, actually was hyped at one point during his career). Had one run of success with the Mets, but Cintron is a better player than Timo and I would agree that Baj is a better player than Ginter (but I don't know if he was more valuable in a trade sense). Iirc, Ginter was out of minor league options, and the Sox weren't going to keep him. Baj still has options, I think.
  2. Baj is much more valuable than Ginter was. Noone's gonna rip on Cintron if he produces like he has in the past. If he sucks as much as Timo, well, yeah, then he'll be a goat.

Well, if you can't go out, just relax and fix yrself a drink. Oh, you already have, you say?
  4. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Mar 11, 2006 -> 05:14 AM) Browns | Team wastes no time in signing Givens Fri, 10 Mar 2006 21:01:46 -0800 Zac Jackson, of ClevelandBrowns.com, reports the Cleveland Browns wasted no time in free agency by signing free agent WR David Givens (Patriots) to an undisclosed contract. Or not. It may have been a hacker who put the story up, or so sez Givens' agent. You bother to hack into a site and that's the best you can do? Dunno about the explanation, but he's not a Brown.
  5. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 08:26 PM) Is that the brown blastula beating up a green blastula in that emoticon? RACISM, I SAY! WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?! EQUALITY FOR ALL BLASTULAS! What are you saying? That we should keep the blastulas apart just b/c of some friction? Do you really think two petri dishes can be separate but equal?
  6. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 07:40 PM) Well whatever it does...it better not strap it on. Especially with children on the way. I'm pretty sure those are the 2-year old's blastulas.
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 07:31 PM) But if the blastulas had cub hats on...you'd never know unless you took the time to examine each of them with a microscope...and then you'd really be in trouble! Yes and no -- the hats would be hard to see, but you could just put your ear to the petri dish and listen for a soft "woo". Does the baby know any words? Like strap or it or down?
  8. Well, how did the fire start? Did I start it? Did the blastulas start it? Is the baby cute? How about the blastulas? For purposes of the thought experiment, would I get arrested for being alone in a fertility clinic when I have no medical know-how? Is this baby possessed? (Head spinning around, that sort of thing.) Are the blastulas Sox fans? Is this baby a biter? Am I incredibly weak at the moment from dehydration, and therefore unable to carry a 2 year old? Hold on, I'll think of some more... I mean, if you're gonna leave it THAT wide open...
  9. Imho, greasy's right. It's not that the idea's bad, and baseball could pull it off -- if they were willing to shorten the season. As it is, many of the best players are missing and the rest are just rounding into shape, the pitchers have these tight limits, and all the games are one-and-done. That's not baseball -- there's a reason series go for multiple games. Noone's saying the players (especially the unknowns) aren't playing hard. But the whole thing was designed badly, to be a sideshow underneath MLB, and that's what it's become. The US gets beat by Canada in a game where most of the players are in st shape, and the media want me to think that's a shocking upset. Have you seen spring training games? Hell, do you watch baseball ever? The Royals can beat the living hell out of the Sox one day, everyone knows that.
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 02:46 AM) Yeah, that one was a bit off kilter, wasn't it? It was just slightly catastrophic, yes.
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 02:26 AM) ...it will have virtually no gigantic effect... Sorry, but for someone usually pretty careful about his wording...
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 01:40 AM) There's very much reason to be concerned about our bullpen. Between guys being injured, tired from last year, or just inconsistent (no position is even close to having as inconsistent of numbers as the relief position is), our bullpen looks to be weaker than last season. However, other aspects of our team look to be stronger, which will hopefully offset any weaknesses. In reality, we're not the New York Yankees. KW doesn't have the payroll to have superstars at every position with amazing depth. With that in mind, given the bullpen depth issue, I still don't think Baj would have been an option. I never got the sense that Ozzie thought highly of him, in regards to pitching in the majors. I think that last part is right. But our next best rh option is Tim Redding. You never know, but in Redding's case, I'm really, really hoping I don't know.
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 01:23 AM) It's not just his numbers in the majors which makes many of us think he can't be a decent major league reliever. He's a two pitch pitcher, and one of them is a very average fastball with no movement. And yes, minor league numbers don't mean much. Edwin Almonte was supposed to be our closer of the future, as was Joe Valentine and Royce Ring. They all had very good minor league numbers. If Lopez wasn't lefty, he wouldn't be an option. I don't agree about the numbers. Of course they're not perfect, that doesn't mean they aren't useful. If performance in the minors didn't indicate anything, they wouldn't tend to promote players who do well. But whatever... KW's big success was acquiring pitching depth -- so when Shingo stunk we had Hermanson, then when he went down we had Jenks. And Damaso and Politte were also there if we needed them. It looks like our last man in the bullpen could be a big problem. That's not a big deal by itself -- he just won't see many innings. But one disappointment and one injury later, and it's possible that we'll be scrambling for something. Cintron'll help, I'm just concerned about the depth. As for the two pitches, hell, Foulke basically has one. It's not easy to get people out (k's) at aa and aaa -- he seems to use them well.
  14. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 12:58 AM) Decent? What's he shown in his time (all be it a short time) that he's decent? He's been nothing less than spectacular in his last 2 years of minor league work, and he's never really had a bad year. Please save the "minor leagues are meaningless" responses -- yeah, okay. Some of us'll take that over about 10 innings in the bigs. Cintron can't hurt, but when we're trading away a guy w/ a good history b/c we have Javier Lopez (with a much longer record of major league ineptitude) looking good in a few innings of spring training, it concerns me a bit, yeah.
  15. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 12:37 AM) Don't forget Ramsey was a 1st round pick himself, and under Spurrier he was starting to throw the ball nicely and was beginning to put up some fairly good numbers. Then Joe Gibbs came in, and basically killed all the momentum he has because he wasn't "his guy". The Skins should stick to their guns IMHO. Besides Culpepper and Brees, unless you go to the draft, there's not a lot of alternatives on the QB market. If I was a team like the Lions, Bills etc. I'd take a long look at Ramsey for a 3rd. Don't forget too that there's not anyone who could do s*** w/ that Spurrier offense in the NFL. I still think Ramsey will be a good qb and is worth someone's 3rd round pick.
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 6, 2006 -> 09:07 PM) That would at least lead to some sort of a reduction in total pork, would it not? Not sure -- you could have the same total amount of pork, just more unilateral pork. Plus, I don't like the idea that the executive branch can try to discipline the Congress so -- support us, we give you yr pork, o/w... Not the purpose of the presidency, for a very good reason.
  17. No no no no no, please God, no. Not for either party, not ever. Why is it we think that presidents are too partisan, but will somehow use a line item veto to strip out all pork, rather than just the other party's pork?
  18. Semantics... All he's saying is that the Knicks aren't w/o a pick next yr. Though it will very likely be lower. You're arguing about an agreement, guys.
  19. I couldn't believe how much better Gangs of NY was the second time I saw it, maybe a couple months ago. And I liked it the first time. The exact opposite of what happens with many nominated movies.
  20. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 6, 2006 -> 02:15 PM) The other progressives will go to the movie and come out bored and frustrated. Bored that the movie was so boring. Frustrated that an important issue was portrayed so blandly. Inasmuch as you go to a movie wanting to hear a political point ("an important issue"), that's right, you would be disappointed. For all the politics around the movie, there's very little inside it. I don't want to spoil the movie, but the movie is not about homosexuality, not at all. Who would be happy with this as an "issue" film? I can't imagine the characters are the 'image' that gay rights advocates want to put forward either. Best picture I've seen, anyway. Crash was just good, and only managed that b/c of Matt Dillon. GN&GL was better, too. (And THERE'S a political movie for ya.)
  21. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 27, 2006 -> 11:35 PM) People clapping for Frank is indeed ignoring what he did, for the moment, and clapping for him. Certainly they aren't applauding what he did right now. They are being blind to what he said at that time, and instead applauding him for his accomplishments on the field. It's simple terminology. What a dumb argument this is. No, it just means that we aren't obsessing over comments that weren't a big deal to anyone until Kenny threw a hissy fit. So applauding Frank means that we value a player over the Sox? That is a dumb argument. I appreciate the player and still hope the Sox beat the A's. Real deep concept.
  22. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 27, 2006 -> 10:32 PM) I know you don't like this argument, but team > player. I can just turn blinders on and not pay attention to him ripping the team i love a new one. That's just not me. I can't ignore it, many here can. That's how it goes. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 27, 2006 -> 11:26 PM) My opinion was about my opinion. I never said jackie hayes thinks X. I have no idea what you are even saying at this point. No, you never said anything about other peoples' opinions.
  23. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 27, 2006 -> 11:11 PM) So now my opinion is stupid? And that's a fact? Because i disagree with yours? Please. I just gave you the reason why I will not give him a standing ovation. In summary, i support the sox before i support a player, doesn't matter who it is. If they take bitter sides like this, i side with the team, especially after Frank started this crap. To me, it's not both. Your opinion was about other peoples' opinions, and you can't back it up, and you show that you're clueless about how I'm thinking. So yes, if you tell me how I'm thinking about something, and you're completely wrong, that qualifies as a dumb opinion. I support the Sox over any one player. But that doesn't mean I have to support any idiot statement about a former player, just because it comes from somebody currently in the Sox organization. If some scout gave a press report about Aaron Rowand strangling stray puppies, he'd better have something to back that up.
  24. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 27, 2006 -> 11:05 PM) When did the White Sox hold salary against any player let alone Frank. I have never heard JR or KW or Schueler when that idiot was here say they were paying someone too much. They have cried they want to much and been stubborn in negotiation, but once the contract is signed, the deal was done. The clause in Thomas' contract was not exercised, Frank got a new contract which gave him a lot more money up front. The White Sox did him a huge favor something they didn't have to do and something that wasn't that sound of business decision, especially considering the clause was triggered by a lack of production. I know the history, but if noone's got a right to complain about the money paid, why is this coming up at all?
  25. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 27, 2006 -> 10:58 PM) Frank's comments weren't childish? Plus, it's my opinion...that's why I, yes I, choose not to root for him or give him that standing O. I don't have to show you anything. They were petulant. They were whiney. They were not even comparable to what KW said. I love this defense. 'It's my opinion you think that way.' Well, I can say for a fact that that's a dumb opinion. I personally don't understand how anyone who's been a Sox fan for years can seriously consider not applauding him when he returns, but I have enough respect for you to not suggest that you're not a 'real fan'. I expect the same in return, especially on a board of ALL SOX FANS. You don't have to show anything, but it's a pretty funny argument if you don't. 'I really, really think so.'
