Austin Jackson terrifies me. Also, this is an absurdly quick hook for Gavin. I don't like this.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 08:33 PM) Tigers show how easy it is to manufacture a run. Youk's defense cost us a run there. But Morel and stuff

I'm okay with that strategy this early in the game.

Got f***ed on that call. Gavin is going to have to get his s*** together out of the stretch. This is the flipside of retiring 11 in a row.

QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 08:18 PM) You do realize that suggesting he sit against a pitcher who mows down righties is not the same as platooning, right? Thought not. Hey if everyone else can trade, DFA, retire our players when they do something bad I should get to exaggerate when they do well!

Healthy Gavin = good We could use his right handed presence in the rotation next year. I might give him that $10M and give Peavy a nice pat on the ass on his way out

We have to make Scherzer throw us three strikes per AB. If he does that, well then we're probably f***ed

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 08:52 AM) AS you know Android is an operating system and the iphone is a device, and the most widely used device in the market today. You cant compare android with the iphone, you can compare the sense or the samsung models with it for a fair comparison And Apple's roots are the people who wanted to be different and cool, up to a few years ago, now its "mainstream" and the "cool" guys are off being different with something else. Its fine with me, I like Apple for its intuitive designs and flawless hardware/software integration. This. If someone wants to top the operating system(s) and the way in which it/they work virtually flawlessly with their devices, go ahead. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 12:59 PM) No that's already the case since "android" isn't a phone it's an operating system. There is no "android" phone. Herein lies the problem. I asked an iOS app developer why he wasn't doing an Android analogue of his app. He showed me pictures of what a normal set of testing devices for iOS looks like -- few different iPhones, few iPads, iPod touch. Then he shows me what Android testing looks like -- hundreds of devices strewn across a room. You can't hope for flawless hardware/software integration when there is so much hardware, all coming from different manufacturers and always trying to be different from the last. Apple doesn't take change lightly and it allows them to have this seamless use of what is already a superior operating system across their various products.

Awful Game
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 08:55 AM) Apparently I am the only Sox fan who was OK with Youk bunting there last night. I thought it was a good move. Youk has looked pretty terrible in the past few weeks with the bat, and if it is executed properly it takes DET by surprise, you lose the force, and you may even get a hit out of it with Cabrera at 3B. It didn't work. But I really don't get putting in Liriano there. If he's in he bullpen, he needs to be in for long relief in a game not very close, at least at first. That was a bizarre situation for him to be in, I really don't understand it. I'm with you. Youk should have bunted. Soxtalk seems to know whether he is able to bunt, yet we don't have a clue since we never saw him bunt at a strike. I have to assume the person or persons that had Youk bunt knew whether or not he is able to do it. Youk never bunted at a strike so it is pretty difficult to know whether he is a competent bunter. We can tell that he was not competent when it comes to pitch selection, which makes me dubious that he was suddenly going to snap out of a slump in that AB.

I think the brain trust believes that Dan Johnson f***ing sucks and doesn't deserve starts, regardless of matchup. I think I agree.

Catch-All Anything Thread
While people have made great points about branching out, etc. I'll add another thing: find a way to really value your alone time. Take up projects of any sort of nature and make it so that when you have nothing to do, you can look forward to a night of doing this thing. Soxtalk is such a thing, even. I also have gotten into fitness and enjoy using a message board to further expand my knowledge in that arena. I have my own blog and I write for Flapship. Knowing/assuming that I will be an academic (and specifically, a Film Studies Ph.D) allows me to build a viewing and reading collection that fulfills me. There are also things that make me feel "fulfilled" that are as basic as organizing and cleaning my living space. I used to not do these things but actually having the time to be neat and proud of my space and some of these semi-frivolous endeavors makes me enjoy my alone time as much as I enjoy being with friends.

If you gave today's Jake Peavy the stuff of San Diego Padres Jake Peavy, you'd have something amazing. At this point his pitching acumen and general execution are excellent, but his stuff isn't quite good enough to make up for the few mistakes he is bound to make throughout a game. Against a team like the Tigers in high leverage situations, the hitters rising to the occasion will sometimes trump his smart pitching because his stuff isn't as good. The real problem, in my estimation, is that his fastball doesn't sink anymore. You can see this borne out in his GB:FB stats. Last I saw, he was in another world compared to other similarly successful pitchers...giving up many more flyballs. This Jake Peavy that is not as good at striking people out AND not as good at getting ground balls is more likely to be touched up as the stakes get high. However, with all that said, I trust him very much in these key games. I want to see him out there. I know we'll get a chance to win and I know he won't be afraid.
