  2. Nitetrain I don't feel confident on Japan player. Only way that could happened is if Kenny is asking Reinsdorf raise payroll and who knows what happened or what could happened with meeting. Things is with money we have left over we all know its either going to be second basemen or catcher. I still like to know why agent didn't mention any other teams then whitesox. Im sure the reporter asked who were the other teams.
  3. I think Aj will probably sign here because its also funny how agent metions only our team and not the rest of the teams.

Pierzynski's rocky reputation in San Francisco last season, White Sox general manager Ken Williams has offered the free-agent catcher a contract. Williams and Pierzynski's agent, Steve Hilliard, confirmed the offer but would not elaborate on how much or for how many years. It's believed, however, the offer is for less than the $3.5 million Pierzynski made last season with the Giants. Hilliard also said he has received interest from other teams, but Williams said he will not get into a bidding war. The Sox also are negotiating with agent Dick Moss for Japanese second baseman Tadahito Iguchi, 30, but may drop out of the running soon. "He's a very good player, an impact-type player," Williams said. Iguchi also may be looking for $7 million a season for three years, much more than the $2 million a season offer the Sox are believed to have made. Regarding Pierzynski, who turned 28 Thursday, the Sox's interest is a turnaround from earlier in the month when Williams came to the conclusion he wouldn't be a fit in the clubhouse. The Giants acquired Pierzynski from Minnesota last winter for Joe Nathan—who went on to become an All-Star closer for the Twins—but they didn't offer him salary arbitration, making him a free agent. The Giants let Pierzynski go despite his .272 batting average, 11 home runs and 77 RBIs, which led National League catchers. The Giants signed former Cardinals catcher Mike Matheny earlier in the month. In April several Giants pitchers anonymously ripped Pierzynski in a newspaper story, with one calling him a clubhouse "cancer." "The pitchers aren't happy with him," one pitcher told the Oakland Tribune. Another said that instead of going over the opposing lineup with starting pitchers, Pierzynski played cards. "I've never in all my years seen a catcher who didn't watch video before games," another pitcher said. "He doesn't watch hitters—other than the Twins games when they are on TV." Hilliard declined to comment on any of the allegations. "We are well aware of what transpired in the past," Williams said. Williams said he has talked with Pierzynski, who acknowledged some mistakes in his first season in San Francisco, and with others in the Giants organization, some of whom wanted to bring Pierzynski back. Williams said the fact that he is talking with Hilliard means he's satisfied Pierzynski's problems in the clubhouse are a thing of the past. "Who among us hasn't had a second, and in some cases third, chance?" Williams said. Williams said he has spoken to many of the pitchers on his staff—presumably including Dustin Hermanson, who was in San Francisco last season. Pierzynski, a lifetime .294 hitter, was a key member of Minnesota teams that tormented the Sox. "A.J. is a fierce competitor," Williams said. "Often times that comes out in an abrasive way." Despite his reputation, Pierzynski may benefit from the lack of quality catchers available this winter. Without any moves, the Sox would open spring training with Ben Davis, a career .237 hitter, and Jamie Burke, a career minor-leaguer. Williams has said he would be comfortable with a Davis-Burke tandem and that he likes the way both handle pitchers. As for Iguchi, Williams thinks he would be a good fit because the Sox have become a desirable destination for Japanese players after the season relief pitcher Shingo Takatsu had in 2004. "We have become extremely popular in Japan for some of the things [Takatsu] has done, the overall experience," Williams said. "The Japanese press tells me there is a great desire from players to come here." Williams admits a couple other teams are interested in him, but he could be the Sox's regular second baseman and hit near the top of the order. "He hits with power, but he has good speed," Williams said. "He's a high [on-base percentage] guy and a good base-stealer." Iguchi hit .333 with 24 home runs and 89 RBIs with the Daiei Hawks last season. Both the Pierzynski and Iguchi situations are likely to be resolved within the next week. Williams has said barring anything unexpected, he will have the team he plans on taking to spring training in place by the end of the first week of January.

  7. White Sox make Pierzynski offer Catcher's representative confirms South Siders' pursuit By Scott Merkin / MLB.com A.J. Pierzynski was placed on waivers by the Giants on Dec. 14. (Gail Burton/AP) The on-again, off-again pursuit of A.J. Pierzynski appears on again for the White Sox, who have made an official offer to the free agent catcher. "That's true," said Steve Hilliard, Pierzynski's representative, when asked about the South Siders' offer to his client on Thursday morning. "That's all I'm going to say." Hilliard would not get into years or money offered by the White Sox, although the deal figures to be worth less than the $3.5 million Pierzynski earned with the San Francisco Giants in 2004. The Giants placed Pierzynski on waivers on Dec. 14, one day after they inked Mike Matheny to a three-year, $10.5 million contract. Pierzynski's offense is a step above Matheny's, as well as that of the White Sox combination of Ben Davis and Jamie Burke. But Matheny was a better defensive player behind the plate, causing the Giants to make Pierzynski a non-tendered free agent. Complete coverage > In his only season with the Giants, Pierzynski finished with a .272 average, 11 home runs and 77 RBIs. But it was not a year without troubles for the veteran catcher, who turned 29 on Thursday. According to an Oakland Tribune story in late April, some Giants players criticized Pierzynski for not being prepared and refusing to go over hitters with starter Brett Tomko before a game in order to finish a hand of cards. One player went as far as to anonymously refer to him as a "cancer." The article prompted a clubhouse meeting, in which the pitchers who were quoted -- but not named -- in the article approached Pierzynski. "They told me they were sorry it happened," Pierzynski said in the May 1 edition of the San Jose Mercury News. "But I said to them, 'Yeah, but now I'm branded the rest of my career as a bad guy.'" When asked about Pierzynski's reputation, Hilliard again stated that he only felt comfortable discussing his confirmation of the White Sox's offer. Outfielder Dustan Mohr, who played with Pierzynski in Minnesota and San Francisco, came to Pierzynski's defense after the early-season accusations. "A.J. doesn't have to justify himself," Mohr told the Mercury News. "He doesn't need to justify who he is. If A.J.'s guilty of anything, it's that he cares too much." Pierzynski holds a .294 career average with 37 home runs and 270 RBIs. He was a particularly feisty thorn in the side of the White Sox when he served as the Twins' starting catcher from 2001 to 2003. But when the Twins made the move to start rookie Joe Mauer in 2004, Pierzynski became expendable. He was traded to the Giants in exchange for Joe Nathan, who quickly developed into an All-Star closer for Minnesota. Hilliard also confirmed Thursday that the White Sox are not the only team interested in Pierzynski. The White Sox's reported interest comes in the wake of comments made by general manager Ken Williams' to MLB.com on Dec. 21. At that point, Williams said the White Sox had not offered Pierzynski a contract. More important, Williams sounded as if an offer would not be on the horizon, especially with his focus on a united, cohesive clubhouse. "We were doing some background work, some research on him, and determined he was not a fit with the White Sox," said Williams of Pierzynski. Williams was unavailable for comment Thursday morning. The signing of Orlando Hernandez last week left the White Sox with a couple of million dollars to work with in this offseason. The team also is interested in adding a middle infielder, with an offer to Japanese All-Star second baseman Tadahito Iguchi on the table at two years, $4 million

  18. El Duque joins White Sox with two-year deal Chicago White Sox CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a two-year, $8-million contract plus incentives with right-handed pitcher Orlando Hernandez. Under terms of the contract, Hernandez will receive $3.5 million in 2005 and $4.5 million in 2006. Hernandez, 35, went 8-2 with a 3.30 ERA (31 ER/84.2 IP) and 84 strikeouts in 15 starts in 2004 with the New York Yankees. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder began the season on the disabled list after missing the entire 2003 campaign following surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff. "Orlando is a great addition to our starting rotation," said Ken Williams, White Sox general manager. "He is a proven winner with a history of pitching well in big games, especially when you look at his postseason record. With Hernandez, Mark Buehrle, Jose Contreras, Freddy Garcia and Jon Garland in the rotation, we believe we have five quality starters who can match up with any team in the league." Hernandez, a former member of the Cuban National Team, limited opponents to a .230 (73-for-317) average, including a .194 (25-for-129) mark by right-handers, and averaged 8.9 strikeouts per 9.0 IP. He began the 2004 season with eight consecutive victories, the first Yankee pitcher to accomplish that feat since Bob Wickman also started 8-0 in 1993. Hernandez, who signed with the Yankees on March 20, 1998, has gone 61-40 with a 3.96 ERA (386 ER/876.1 IP), 704 strikeouts and one save in 139 games (136 starts) over six Major League seasons, all with New York. He also has pitched in 17 postseason games (14 starts), going 9-3 with a 2.65 ERA (30 ER/102.0 IP) and 101 strikeouts. Hernandez is the only pitcher in Major League history to win his first eight postseason decisions. His nine career playoff victories rank third all-time among Yankee pitchers, trailing only Andy Pettitte (13) and Whitey Ford (10), while his 2.65 (30 ER/102.0 IP) ERA is seventh-best among all pitchers since 1990 (minimum 40.0 IP). Hernandez was included in a seven-player trade involving the White Sox, Yankees and Montreal Expos on January 15, 2003 in which he was acquired by Chicago and later sent to Montreal, along with three players, for right-handed pitcher Bartolo Colon and infielder Jorge Nunez.
