  1. QUOTE(SEALgep @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 08:15 PM) He already said he wants to stay on the Sox, and isn't looking to break the bank. I've heard that before, most recently with Magglio. He liked the Sox and felt comfortable in the city. He didn't like the $14 mill. for 5 years he was offered. Bob
  2. QUOTE(striker62704 @ Jan 26, 2005 -> 10:38 PM) Boras said Ordonez is a better fielder than Hidalgo? I thought Hidalgo had a cannon? Won't it be weird seing our pitchers face Maggs? Boras also said there is no free agent as good next year as Magglio. That may be the case (I haven't seen the list) but I'm guessing whichever of Boras clients that are available next offseason will all of the sudden become the greatest thing since sliced bread. Boras may not say they're as good or better then Magglio, but it won't stop him for asking for Beltran type money. Bob
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 13, 2005 -> 08:15 AM) Very interesting. What would we be looking at getting from LA? Minor leaguers? Edwin Jackson?? Is there a color here for pipdreams because that's what it would be? Bob
  4. QUOTE(shagar69 @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 12:46 PM) 3 or 4 guys have already called in saying that theyre tired of the cubs not making any moves, lying to the fans, not listening to the fans, keeping sosa. They also gave props to the sox saying that they have made moves, treat the fans better. I love it!! :finger the cubs I like that picture from Stuff Magazine. I also like giving it to the Cubs. Bob
  5. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 02:15 PM) Hell, on top of that he scored 95 runs in just 120 games. Hitting in front of Bonds will do that. Bob
  6. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 04:33 PM) I only see a quote plus box and then reply. I am using netscape so i am confused. Me too. But I think my quotes are getting in OK if I use the Quote Plus Box. Bob
  7. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 02:58 AM) I honestly don't think Billy Beane is all that great of a GM. Everyone acts like he's some kind of genius but it's not hard to win when you stumble across three of the best young pitchers in baseball. The real test is going to be able to see how he's able to rebuild now that he has lost that core. I guess the issue is if he really stumbled on thoe 3 pitchers. He drafted 2 of them. He also drafted Harden who soon will be a 4th pitcher he stumbled on. And he's brought in other guys with high celings like Blanton. The guy who sounds like he should be used for female sanitary reasons may also be a decent starter. At some point it's not stumbing. If anything drafting Mark Buehrle in the 38th round is stumbling on a great pitcher. But give Beane some credit. He drafts and develops more pitching then the Sox. Also, Beane is pretty solid. Look at the 2000-2004 seasons in the AL West. The Mariners have had a payroll in the $85-90 mil range. Until last year the Rangers were around $95 mill. Starting last year the Angels went from $64 mill in 02 to ober $90 mill in '04. And Beane has seen his payroll climb from about $30-35 mill to $ 60 mill. last year. Yet considering an unbalanced schedule where he has to play thos 3 high spending teams about 19 times each he has managed to make the playoffs 4 years in a row and barely miss out on a fifth. Is it good management on Beane or incompetent management on the other 3 teams that they couldn't make the playoffs more. Yes I'm aware the Angels won the Series, but none no other team from the West has even been to the Series since the league went with the Wild Card. Beane deserves a lot of credit. Bob
  8. QUOTE(SuperSteve @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 07:12 PM) IIRC, he started as a starter in New York (NL). I imagine it was someone else who brought Isringhausen to Oakland and got him on track. That is what I would think. Otherwise I think he goes for bigger names...Dotel, Foulke, Koch. Beane became GM in 1997. I thought Isringhausen was there in 1999 but I could be wrong. Bob
  9. QUOTE(KittleWalk83 @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 04:39 PM) What are you talking about? The 2003 wasn't a free agent signing after free agent signing. They did get Pudge but otherwise, they had mostly home grown players. And I should have been more clear and said the Marlins 2003 WS. I should be more clear. Signing Free Agents in 1997 was a big reason the Marlins won the 2003 series. When the season was over the Marlins traded a bunch of good to great players for prospects. A lot of these prospects helped the 2003 team flourish. Also, by winning and breaking up the 1997 team, the Marlins became quite lousy. They had high draft picks that also helped them. So my point isif the Marlins were just another average team in 1997, one that never broke the bank, they would most likely not have won in 2003. They wouldn't have all that great talent to trade after the '97 series. And unless they went from my assumption of an average team in 1997 with no free agent signings and continually played average from 1998-2002 they wouldn't have the advantage of high draft picks. That was my point. Bob
  10. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) What cheap middle reliever did he turn into a successful closer? Isringhausen. I thought there was someone else, but guess I was wrong. Bob
  11. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jan 2, 2005 -> 08:35 PM) yeah despite Oakland trading away 2 of the big 3 their rotation should still be solid especially if Zito returns to form... dont doubt Beane until he has a losing season. Even then I wouldn't doubt Beane. Just about every team is going to need to rebuild eventually, especially those in the bottom half in payroll. And while Beane has made his share of mistakes...and not trading for B-Mac may be one of them, he does have a plan. One thing I've noticed is a couple of years ago his thing was to find a cheap middle reliever and turn him into a successful closer. Then trading him when his value increased and finding a replacement. Lately, it seems Beane has been going after catching. Outside of finding good pitching, finding a good catcher is probably hte enxt most diffiicult thing. It appears to me that the he is eventually going to trade some of his catching prospects to fill holes. We as Sox fans know how difficult it is to find a halfway decent catcher let alone a good one. Bob
  12. QUOTE(SuperSteve @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 03:44 AM) To an extent. The Marlins are a different circumstance. It's comparing apples and oranges. Exactly. both of the Marlins championships are due to spending big in free agents. That's how the Marlins won in 1997. Then they began trading off all these good players (rightfully or wrongfully selling highat the time) and acquring good prospects by trade while suffering through a couple of rebuilding seasons and high draft picks. I don't think the Marlins would have won either championship if they didn't break the bank in 1997. Bob
  13. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 2, 2005 -> 01:38 PM) I think billy's making a huge mistake here. I'm willing to bet that bmac turns out better then Haren, I'm not that high on Danny, I think he's a bit overrated. He might be. But Beane never said he didn't like BMac. The article said he wanted pitchers that are major league ready. Both Haren and Myer were good in the minors. Nohing wrong with wanting guys to come in now. That being said, there is a chance that B-Mac can be better then one or both of them. But Beane doesn't want to wait the year. The issue here seems to be major league readiness not whether B-Mac will be better. This may be bad thinking on Beane's part but can you really blame him on passing on a Sox pitchng prospect who has had 1 year of success at AA and may be ready in '06 when he can get a guy who is slightly more proven and ready to contribute now? Bob
  14. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jan 2, 2005 -> 10:53 PM) Welcome to soxtalk. I think everett being a cancer and an all around bad guy was totally blown out of proportion. He is not a problem in my eyes. Loaiza wants a three year deal as it stands. Even though he blew last year, there is no way in hell he signs a minor league contract with anyone, dead arm or not. Everett's problem is his weight. He needs to get his act together or risk looking like a Brontosaurus. Bob
  15. Thanks. I've been over at the other board for awhile and smetimes need a break from some it. I've been lurking a bit and like what I see. Bob
  16. Doesn't Grudz have a abd back? Bob
  17. I think it's a good move if the Sox get AJ. I don't want to watch Be nDavis flailing at pitches all season again. Bob
  18. Stil ldoesn't help the Sox get a fifth starting pitcher. Bob
  19. So if Chacon is inconsistent around the plate, why would a team want him as a starter over a reliever? Bob
  20. But don't forget the Sox have the mighty Joe Borchard waiting in the wings. That's supposed to be sarcastic, I just don't know how to do that here yet. Bob
  21. That's too bad. Can't say I'm surprised KW would go after Ortiz as I don't have much faith in him. But Ortiz statistically in his career is worse then average. Bob
