  1. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 12:25 PM) You can build a decent farm system while still having a top-tier ball club with the payroll KW has. Right now it looks like we have neither. The sad part is we're probably a stud starting pitcher away from being a top-tier club (granted, so are a handful of other teams). But the difference between having that #1 stud and a guy like Floyd, Danks, or Contreras is 7-10 games, and that's the difference between winning the Central vs. finishing in 3rd which is what we'll most likely do. It's too bad we didn't have a way of trading for Bedard. He would have made us a legit '08 contender.
  2. QUOTE(Tannerfan @ Mar 7, 2008 -> 01:06 PM) In the last week of December '04, I placed a bet on the '05 White Sox at Ceasars Palace at 30 to 1. I only bet 50 bucks, but I felt like a genius in Oct. Did the cashier laugh at you when you told them who you wanted to bet on? I would have.
  3. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Mar 7, 2008 -> 12:43 PM) Not to turn this into anti-cub but Vegas hedges their numbers based on the fact that people will play them regardless of the true expected result. Same thing with a lot of west coast football especially USC as money is put on them regardless of the spread. In reality the Sox and cubs probably a lot closer than this. I'm glad someone realized how it works. It's based strictly off how people are betting, not on any kind of projections or anything like that. Vegas sets the odds based on where the money is being bet to ensure they make money regardless of what actually happens. With basically 2 rookies in the rotation, the Sox have no chance at a World Series in 2008. That doesn't mean they can't make some trades mid-season if we're in the hunt that would improve our chances, but as the team stands now there's no way.
  4. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Mar 7, 2008 -> 11:42 PM) Wasn't that the heavy metal band with dick snyder as the lead singer? Are you talking about Dee Snider? If so, that's Twisted Sister, not testicle.
  5. I noticed an awful lot of Sox players that seem to have injuries and we're only in early March. Quentin (shoulder), Hall (shoulder), Owens (groin), and Richar (back) were all listed in the past week as having (hopefully) minor injuries. If the Sox are going to try to contend at ALL in 2008, they are going to have to stay healthy, and that goes for everyone from our top tier players to the "role" players on the bench. Our minor league system won't be able to absorb too many trips to the DL.
  6. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 4, 2008 -> 05:56 PM) Wow, that is horrible patience against a knuckleballer The Angels must have been trying to make sure they made the early bird at IHOP.
  7. I'd toss Jenks into that as well. We have no relievers that have proven they can close games AND stay healthy, so Bobby is definitely extremely valuable.
  8. QUOTE(kman @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 09:37 PM) Does anybody have the list of batting intro music for the white sox players? Well Paulie comes out to "Harvester of Sorrow" by the greatest heavy metal band of all time, Metallica.
  9. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) Gonzalez wrote something in the Tribune a month or so ago that said MacDougal still had an option. Something about his minor league stay last year being short and it didn't count. Here it is: Pitchers Gavin Floyd and Nick Masset are out of minor-league options and face waivers if they don't make the White Sox's Opening Day roster. But the same status doesn't apply to veteran reliever Mike MacDougal even though he was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte last June. MacDougal still has one option remaining as a result of a longstanding rule in the Basic Agreement. MacDougal was optioned on June 4, only to be recalled on June 15 when reliever Bret Prinz was designated for assignment. Because MacDougal was optioned for less than 20 days, his stint in the minors doesn't count as an option. Therefore, the Sox still can send MacDougal to the minors without exposing him to waivers if he doesn't earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. The Sox view the 30-year-old middle reliever as a serviceable pitcher despite his 6.80 ERA in 54 appearances last year. MacDougal had a 1.80 ERA in 25 games for the Sox in 2006 after coming in a trade from Kansas City. Well that's a good thing. Clearly he's still having problems and probably needs at least a month in AAA to work out whatever issues he's having. Then the Sox can call him up for one last chance. If it still doesn't work out, then they can trade or release him. The guy obviously has some good stuff, but if you can't get outs, it doesn't matter how "good" your stuff is.
  10. QUOTE(daa84 @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 04:29 PM) not to mention bonderman was bad last year...they could be in trouble with their pitching....miller was probably gonna be their second best pitcehr behind verlander....but man if verlander goes down taht team could be in real trouble.... Yep, Bonderman is their #2, and his ERA was 5.01 last year. Those are some very high ERAs for what is supposed to be one of the more pitcher-friendly parks in the AL. Hell, everyone made Verlander sound like the 2nd coming last year, and his ERA was 3.66. That's basically what Buehrle (3.63) and Vazquez (3.74) had, and MB/JV pitch at the homer-friendly US Cellular.
  11. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) It made a ton of sense at the time, and don't really blame Kenny for it in the least. The Sox were right in the thick of things in 2006, and needed bullpen help. They got a guy that they thought could help them, and Mac pitched incredibly well in the 2nd half of 2006. They traded Lumdsen who everyone thought was going to the Sox next ace, and a extremely raw pitcher in Cortes. Obviously Cortes have developed, but you can't fault the Sox for taking that risk. If you want to question anything, the extension is where question marks can be raised, but if you dug up that thread, people loved that signing. Hindsight is 20/20.
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) Who is the Tigers #5 this year? According to CBS it's Nate Robertson. 4.76 ERA in 2007. Of course their #3 is Dontrelle (5.17 in 2007) and their #4 is the 62 year old Kenny Rogers. That 3-5 is no better that ours, really.
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 04:23 PM) Haven't even had the chance to look at other team's rosters yet (it's still college basketball season). Of course, our relief corps might be more important than that of the Tigers and Indians, as our 3-4-5 starters are no more than 6 inning guys. The Tiggers' rotation is pretty weak. Their pen will be very important to their chances of success.
  14. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) Find me a bullpen in the Central that isn't full of a ton of question marks. I dare you. Yep. The AL Central has pretty bad bullpens. The only exception is probably the Twins, who always seem to have solid bullpen arms. The Sox as well if things go right for us.
  15. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 04:20 PM) I guess I'm the only person that thinks Linebrink will stink in the AL and pitching at the Cell. I'll hope for the best, but I don't think the majority of people are optimistic about his future with the Sox. Sadly, even if he stinks for the Sox, he'll still be an improvement over what we've had in the bullpen the past 2 seasons. Obviously the move to an AL hitters' park will result in an increase of ERA, but hopefully it won't be MacDougalesque.
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 04:13 PM) Like the last two seasons, it seems like it's Jenks and a crapshoot. Dotel staying healthy is one of the keys to our season. Linebrink is just not very good, and the rest of the guys you mentioned are huge question marks. Career ERA of 3.21 for Linebrink. More than a half run better than Dotel (3.76), who you view as solid when healthy.
  17. QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 04:13 PM) Did I need to put it in green? It is just being talked about a lot around here. Well there ARE a lot of moronic statements made on here, so the lack of green made me think it was yet another. And yes, sadly, Crede is going to get traded and that's the bottom line.
  18. QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) They must be frequenting Soxtalk. Um, the Giants' interest in Crede has been widely reported for quite some time. Months, in fact.
  19. There are players out there who have long-term contracts that are just as stupid as Juan Uribe's 1-yr $4.5M deal. So it's not inconceivable that we could find a team to take him off our hands.
  20. QUOTE(Jim Spencer @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 12:07 PM) Nope. Comcast Are any ST games going to be on WGN?
  21. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 02:51 AM) What do we do with this? Um, it's March 3. Therefore we do nothing about it. If he's "still hitting" come the end of March, then there will be something to discuss.
  22. QUOTE(SnB @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 09:06 AM) Skipping class to watch? YEEEEEEEEES. Is it on WGN by any chance?
  23. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Mar 1, 2008 -> 05:11 PM) I guess that Sox just like to active in the community and promote equality. What next, a pitcher with no arms? Well we had 1 handed Jimmy Abbott, but at least he was talented when he was young.
  24. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Mar 1, 2008 -> 05:07 PM) Oh, I didn't realize affirmative action now also means that each team must carry a pitcher on their roster that absolutely sucks. In the Sox case, I wish it was just 1.
  25. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Mar 1, 2008 -> 05:00 PM) Why do we need Dewon Day when we already have a right hander that gives up runs in bunches named Mike McDougal Let's just say they have quotas to fill.
