Tough game for Michigan tonight. I really think they will be a different team when Hart returns. Calhoun is real good. Wisconsin did a real good job of sealing off the defensive ends and Calhoun had the speed to bounce outside and make things happen. He looked like my backs in NCAA FB 2006 on PS2. Michigan tried different things, but couldn't stop him. They tried blitzing and Wisconsin kept burning them with screen passes, mostly to Calhoun. When they shot the DE's wide, he would run inside. They just couldn't come up with an answer. Give Wisky credit. Everyone knew what they were going to do and no one could stop them.

NCAA Overtime
I like the NCAA system just fine. If I were to make a change, I would consider making each team start 5 yards farther back in each subsequent OT beyond the first (no farther than the 50 though). Defenses are often so tired when games go to multiple OT's it is too easy to score. Moving the starting spot back would give them a little more margin for error even if giving them more ground to cover.

QUOTE(1549 @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 04:57 PM) I am also Curious to see what Michigan does this weekend. This is a weird team, I don't know what to think. I think the loss of Braylon Edwards is definately showing. There is not that big time playmaker that Henne can always get the ball to. I would like to see Carr use Tabb a little more, but he has been a non-factor his whole career pretty much. I thought he was going to be a big time receiver. I don't see where the loss of Edwards has shown at all. Michigan had receivers open in the Notre Dame game, Henne just didn't get the ball to them. He either through to the wrong receiver, or threw inaccurately. There is plenty of talent on that offense. Sure having Edwards would be nice, but this team will score points. Henne did not play well against Notre Dame and Hart getting hurt early didn't hurt either. The defense will get a test this weekend, but I am not worried about the offense at all.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 04:01 AM) Stopping Calhoun is gonna be a hell of a task. Carolina constantly put 8 in the box and he still managed over 150, Wisc just kept pounding him and pounding him until eventually he wore down Carolina's D in the 4th and got some big runs. One thing Michigan has a big chance with is their passing game. If Henne is on, they could have a big day. You will likely see Wisconsin playing smash mouth football trying to speed up the game and Michigan airing it out trying to get as many possessions as possible. Will be interesting to see who prevails. Most people in the nation don't know about Calhoun yet, but they will. If Michigan can get ahead by a couple of scores early, it will certainly help pull Wisky out of their plan.

Hurricane Katrina
QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 04:46 AM) I was just thinking, in all this talk about readiness to respond, has anyone considered that some disasters are on a scale that we could never be ready for? Maybe we can't make every situation come out happy for everyone. Maybe there truly isn't anything we can do to stop every conceivable catastrophe from happening. In all honesty, that is how I have viewed this from the beginning. In some situations, no amount of preparedness can assure orderly execution of the plan. Sometimes, situations are so big, that chaos naturally ensues.

Who said Michigan is struggling?? I'll wait to see what happens this weekend before making that determination. One bad game does not mean a team is "struggling".

QUOTE(Mercy! @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) So there's still time left, thank goodness! Based on his only interaction with me, I was left assuming that Rex had a whole bunch of dog jokes to share. One can hardly go wrong with animal jokes, I think. Mercy, you have me all wrong......

QUOTE(ilsox7 @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 11:08 PM) Yep. Watched it all the way through. Complete domination. Had to ask a few people to make sure it was actually IU on the field. Yeah, I was asking who the hell those guys were and why they stole the Hoosiers uniforms.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 10:17 PM) By the way...did anyone else catch that the IU/Kentucky game was broadcast on ESPN Classic? I couldn't figure that one out, but it was enjoyable to watch it out here. ESPN Classic is broadcasting a couple of college football games every Saturday.

Anyone who has used a travel site
Priceline works well if you can work around their restrictions. I have not found any site to come close to them in most situations for hotels. Flights are iffy if you have any restrictions on the time of day that you can fly, but if you can work around that, flight rates are generally excellent as well. If Southwest flies where you are wanting to go, they are always a safe bet.

Trivia question

Trivia question
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 18, 2005 -> 04:45 AM) Apparently, fans are not allowed to vent when a team has the f***in bases loaded with no outs and can't score because the next 3 hitters tries to tie the game when down 5-0. THAT is what is wrong with Chicago baseball right now. Get back to getting base hits. Homers are effecient, but are way, way, way too rare. Unless that was humor and I am just blind because I hate not scoring with the bases loaded and no outs. Sure they are.............. just don't call it a trivia question!! If you want to rant, rant, but do it intelligently.

Tennessee @ Florida about to start. Watch Florida WR Chad Jackson, who may be the best player you have never heard of. He is from Hoover (AL) HS who plays their games at the Hoover Met after the Barons season is done every year. Currently Hoover is ranked #2 in the country by USA Today and has won 4 out of the last 5 6A State Championships in Alabama (losing in the Championship game the other year). Jackson was a star 3 years ago and it was only a matter of time before he stepped up for Florida. He is flourishing in Urban Meyer's system this year.

IU spanking Kentucky at the moment...... Not too often do the Hoosiers spank anyone this time of year, unless you are talking soccer.

One question, one comment......... Comment - The world demand for oil will not continue at its current rate. At some point, and I think it is already coming, consumers will go back to being more concerned about fuel efficiency and the types of vehicles manufactured/purchased will adjust and slow the increase in demand, if not decrease it from current levels. Question for those that know more about oil than I do - Is the supply of oil in this country a bigger problem than our ability to refine it into gasoline? The number of refineries has dropped dramatically in this country in recent years so I am wondering if our ability to produce gasoline might be or become a bigger problem then our ability to produce/purchase oil.

Midnight Madness is a month away, BUT...
Quick intial thoughts..... -- Louisville is rated too high at #6 -- Iowa is rated too high at #12 -- While I like IU's talent, there are an awful lot of newcomers to rank them at #15 after not making the tournament the past two years -- It will be interesting to see how Kansas does. I can't remember the last time they were ranked that low, but they lost a lot. My gut tells me they should be higher nonetheless.

Not a huge weekend for football, but a nice start for a couple of teams. Michigan has bounced back and looks as if they have their head out of their offensive arses. Granted it is against Eastern Michigan, but they have looked better, despite not having Mike Hart. Louisville showing it is for real, pounding Oregon St. after OSU jumped ahead early. Vanderbilt taking care of business against Ole Miss, making their claim to a possible bowl game for the first time in 23 years! And someone please tell me those Syracuse unis are throwbacks?? They are freakin terrible! Better matchups later today..........

QUOTE(Mercy! @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) Hey, thanks for the prompt response. May I venture one more question? Why do you present yourself to the world with a "Shut Up b****" avatar. Do you have any close women friends? I guess that's two questions. Thanks. FWIW, a female dog is also called a b****. I don't see a female in Nuke's avatar so is it not assumptive to assume the meaning of the word? b**** is used in many ways, mostly without much tatse or class, but it does not always refer to women.

Idea about how to bring Frank Back Next year
The Sox aren't going to buy him out for $3.5 million and then give him an incentive laden contract with a base of another $3.5 million.

Louisiana being declared a state of emergency does not turn control over to FEMA. That is merely a designation to enable an area to receive federal aid, it has nothing to do with who is in control.

Hurricane Katrina
I read the Newsweek piece and NY Times article and neither make me want to blame the President. I see many breakdowns over the whole situation and not really one entity to blame. I'd like to think that we would be ready for anything, but I just can't see how anybody was or could have been truly ready for this. The night after the hurricane many believed New Orleans had been spared. The next day, it was evident there would be widespread flooding and people who were left in New Orleans headed to the Superdome and the Convention Center if they could get there. Remember the day of the hurricane, only 8,000 or 9,000 people had come to the Superdome. Within a couple of days that number was estimated at 24,000. The convention center was not originally a shelter and people started flocking to it after the fact. The next day is when reports of lawlessness began (more than looting grocery stores) but I don't think anyone thought it would be as bad as it got. I don't recall any other disaster where the lawlessness ruled like this. I don't think anyone realized how compromised local authorities were or that the National Guard lost 20 rescue vehicles and their command center in the flooding. I think we all saw this tradgedy grow in front of our eyes. With the uncertainty of who was in charge (state vs. Federal - note they didn't know), I can understand the confusion. I can understand that the federal government didn't want to just push the state government aside and take over without it being requested. The fact that it was difficult to get relief there because the whole state of Mississippi was difficult to get through because of storm damage and the route from Mobile to New Orleans along the coast was practically impossible to get through made getting supplies there much more difficult and took time. To me all of these things explain what happened. Does this mean that they cannot learn from this? Hell no. Does it mean that perhaps some people could have done much better and their jobs may be in jeopardy? Sure I think investigating what happened is a good and necessary thing. But flaming the situation right now trying to blame everone doesn't help fix the problems we have now.
