September Roster Expansion
This guy's whole point seems to be based on this statement..... I have not done any research on this, but I would tend to think he is VERY wrong in that assertion. My guess is that most teams bring up in the 3-5 players range, with very FEW bringing up more than 8. I don't think it affects games/pennant races anywhere nearly as much as he thinks. That said, there is certainly more of a possibility of races being affected now with the wild card than before. Still, I think it is a non-issue, personally.

QUOTE(Randar68 @ Aug 22, 2005 -> 06:03 PM) I'm only going off observational opinion, but hasn't Young's K/AB rate really been steadily improving over the course of the season? That is my off the top of my head impression as well. He started a little slow in that regard, hence part of the reason why he was hitting in the .230's around the beginning of June. But aside from doubles you could say that most of his production has steadily improved of the course of the season.

Little League World Series
QUOTE(He_Gawn @ Aug 21, 2005 -> 09:54 PM) Cant believe Brownsburg didnt make it again. Oh yea, they are all grown up and domanating the HS phase now. When I was 13 we played a practice game against a team from a Pony League on the other side of town. One of their pitchers had a full beard at 13. He was a lefty and he was GOOD!

8/20 Games
QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 21, 2005 -> 01:51 PM) what has been great to see lately is the amount chris young has been walking. his walk rate has been real good, 60 in 405 ABs. what gets me so excited about young is that last year he was thought of as a tools player, quick bat, great speed, would develop great power once he grew into the frame. well lookin at his numbers, .916 OPS, with 60 extra base hits and 60 walks in what would normally be 2/3 of a year in the bigs is damn good from a stats perspective as well. seems like so many of our offensive prospects have been "tools" guys , and didnt have the peripherals that suggest that they would make it big. nice to see young is a great combination of both worlds......only knock is his strike outs, but asssuming his increased walk rate is no fluke, increasing walks is the first sign that strike outs will begin to come down The walks were there last year. In reality, it is his strikeout rate that is down this year more than an increased walk rate. His walk rate right now it one walk in every 6.75A AB. Last year it as one in every 7:04 AB, so there is a slight increase, ut that would only equate to 2-3 more walks this season than 2004. His strikeout rate however is now one K per every 3.55 AB where last year it was one K per every 3.2. That equates to 15 less strikeouts. Neither number is a huge improvement, but it tells me he is at least headed in the right direction, but holding his walk rate and cutting down his strikeouts, while maintaining or exceeding production levels.

Phil Nevin
I believe he simply had a limited no trade clause in his contract. Texas was not one of the teams he selected, which is why he ended up there.

Chuck Haeger!
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 21, 2005 -> 03:22 AM) B-Ham lost 3-2 in 7. Haigwood pitched a good game but came up with a no decision. 5.0 IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 4BB, 6SO, 1.20 ERA They played a DH last night. Can't find results for the 2nd game.

Bret Boone???
The question needs to be asked again. Where would Boone play? He is NOT a SS and Uribe, the guy you seem to hate so much plays SS. Boone has zero fit on this team.

Little League World Series
Vista, CA beat Owensboro, KY today 7-2. It was a pretty ordinary LL game with the exception of the performance by the Vista, CA pitcher, Kalen Pimentel. His line was 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 18K Not only did he record every out in the game by strikeout, but he only threw 17 balls the whole game! Eight of them went to the two batters that walked, so he threw only 9 other balls to 23 other hitters in 6 innings. He was painting the corners with a regularity I have never seen from a 12-yr old kid. Especially one that was consistently throwing 73-75mph until the end of the game. That is equivalent to 95-98 on a MLB field.

NCAA 2006
Hey Brian, if his success in this game is any indicator of real life, Michigan fans are going to be really happy with Kevin Grady. I just finished his senior year and I can honestly say he was the best running back I have ever played with in this game. The big key for me was that his speed is only 88, so I wasn't just running around end all day long. He ran through and around guys and broke tackle after tackle. His senior season stats were: Rushes: 324 Yards: 2,637 (new NCAA record) Yds/Att: 8.1 TD: 44 He won the Heisman of course and Michigan won the National Championship, going 13-0. I played about 8-9 of the 13 games and simmed the rest. Hopefully he will push Mike Hart a bit for some PT this year or next and Michigan will have two great backs.

Know your waiver rules II
not sure why the other topic was locked, it didn't seem too inflammatory to me.... Sorry Juggernaut, you are off here. Stark hit the rules right on the nose. As he said in his article "There are all kinds of waivers for all different occasions". You are referring to waiver rules for optioning a player rather than trading. Not all waivers are the same.

Phil Nevin
There is a reason Nevin gets moved a lot. He is a royal pain in the ass and NOT someone the Sox need for this team.

Bobby Jenks
No need to register.... Once self-jinxed, Jenks makes most of second chance

Steroid Announcement Friday?
see photo of Kapler several years ago. Kapler has always been this way, dating back to when he was in the minors.... Here is an article about him and Ron Gant from 2001 I don't know Kapler's situation personally, but I do know guys that have done some amazing things in a gym without roids. A strong workout regimen, plenty of cardio and strict diet and supplements as simple as Met-Rx can make a huge difference. Just thought I would add this, 8 pages later.........

Official College Football Thread
QUOTE(Fotop @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 03:44 AM) well judging by your birthday...you're too young to remember when ND dominated EVERYONE (hell I'm too young as well, the Holtz Era was a little before my time but not TOO much...i could comprehend things in '93). so i'll take your ignorance with a grain of salt. But I guess if you want to jump to conclusions about ND, at least do it for the right reasons. The schedule being hard wouldn't be a good place to start if you're trying to say that we'll never win another National Championship. I mean how can you say ND's schedule is going to be hard in 5 years, 10 years, etc. You can't. So i don't see how that correlates because you don't know the quality of your opponents until maybe a year before you play them. All teams go through cycles, I doubt you remember when USC sucked...or when Miami sucked...or when Oklahoma sucked but guess what they did for one time or another. The thing about ND up until recent memory is that we NEVER went through that cycle. Since we are now, everyone wants to put us in the ground. But guess what, elite programs survive the test of time. So as I've been saying, we may not win this year, or maybe next, but it's coming and it's coming soon. ND will be on top again...I can say that with full confidence (even though i may be biased). good points, fotop. In addition to USC, Miami and Oklahoma, you can add Alabama, Nebraska and Penn State. Like Notre Dame now, those teams are down and have been powerhouses in the past. Tennessee has always been solid, but Florida has had its down times. I'm sure I have forgotten others as well.

Blue-chip recruit Rush visits Indiana
Thanks greasy....... this is always a favorite time of year for me. Baseball is winding down, college football is about to begin and it is about the right time to start thinking IU hoops in depth.

Blue-chip recruit Rush visits Indiana
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 02:03 AM) Lucky for you, the one thing I know more than baseball is college basketball. Illinois will be good this year, but they're going to be a totally different team than they were last year. The main reason they were so great last year is that they were a phenomenal shooting team. You leave them open, and they'd drain it. There's a gigantic dropoff in the shooting ability from someone like Head to Randle. Michigan St. will be the class of the Big 10, but I fully expect Illinois to get around a 4 seed next year. I wouldn't underestimate the loss of Roger Powell either. Illinois has talent no doubt and they may be very good. But as you said, they will be a very different team. Last year's team had a unique cohesiveness. This year new players will have to step up and they will have to all fit together to make that happen.

Blue-chip recruit Rush visits Indiana
QUOTE(UofIChiSox @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 09:36 PM) Every year Indiana is supposed to be good, and every year they underachieve, the reason, in my opinion is that Mike Davis can't get his players to play well together. There was an article a few weeks ago in ESPN the Magazine about Deron Williams and Bracey Wright that mentioned that Davis told Bracey to shoot the ball at least 20 times a game. What'd that do? it hurt Bracey's draft stock because he took so many bad shots and it hurt Indiana's team because Bracey was forcing up crap. At Indiana, Rush might get the spotlight, but they have a good amount of talent there already with White, Vaden, and Killingsworth. They'll have a good team, should be somewhere in the upper middle of the big ten, but Mike Davis will keep them from doing too much. 1. IU wasn't "supposed" to be good the past two years. We hoped they would be, but expectations have been somewhat tempered since the debacle 3 years ago, especially last year. 2. I agree that Davis has not done a good job of getting his players to play together, however I saw some big time improvement last year after Bracey learned to play within a team concept much of the time. 3. Davis may have told Bracey he needed to be more aggressive offensively, he may have even told him that he should be able to get 20 shots a game, but I GUARANTEE you he did not tell him to toss up the s***ty shots Bracey took the past two years and to ignore open teammates to get those 20 shots. 4. I know Rush talks like he is a one and done player, and he may just be, but I have my doubts. Not every great HS player is good enough their freshman year to make the jump. I think you will find a lot of guys you think will be one and done's stay because they need to improve their game.

Blue-chip recruit Rush visits Indiana
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 03:03 PM) Wow, hate Davis for his coaching abilities, but damn can he recruit. I don't necessarily buy that. Think about how many players he has "just" missed out on. The Luol Deng's, the Charlie Villanueva's, the Kris Humphries', the Lawrence Roberts', not to mention the Indiana HS kids. The kid from Utah is transferring because his former coach is an IU assistant. The kid from Dallas listed IU in his top six. Rush has us in his top 3. DJ White was fairly easy because he had a long standing relationship with him (and hiring his HS coach didn't hurt). I think Kerry Rupp is pretty much responsible for bringing in Ben Allen, from what I have heard. I try not to look at things as half-empty, but I just don't see all the successes. Players relate to him, no doubt. But something is scaring them off, whether it is how they will be used, how much they will play or not knowing whether or not he will be there. I'm not saying he is a bad recruiter, but I am not convinced he is as good as he is made out to be.

Hilarious Top 50 prospect list
QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) First of all, J.J. Hardy isn't a prospect anymore due to the amount of at bats he has currently with the Brewers. Secondly, Hardy isn't in the same league as Ramirez, as Hardy is atrocious with the bat. He's had good seasons in the Cal league and the PCL, which anyone could do. His future is as a utility man while Ramirez is likely to stick at SS even if he doesn't have power. Actually he had a pretty nice season in the Southern League, a pitcher's league, as well.
