  1. fotop don't overlook Jason Avant. He is more of a possession receiver, but Henne will find him often. While not as xplosive as Edwards, he certainly could become the go to guy as Edwards was last year. His first TD catch Saturday was very Edwards-like.
  2. I agree that it will be a game next week. The defenses will have to step up or the score could mirror that of the BG-Wisky game yesterday.
  3. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) Rex, it actually happens in every program. There are 105 players on a roster and players can only be numbered 1-99 without numbers preceding with 0. So you are gonna have some overlap. You just can't have the players with the same numbers on the field at the same time. I guess I have just never seen it before. I thought they could only dress 85, so I never thought about it.
  4. Another key mistake is concentrating on the monthly payment. If you tell them you can afford $300/month, they'll monkey around with other figures (interest rate, length of the loan, etc.), still get you to your figure, but it won't be the best deal for you. When I bought my first new car many years ago, my parents weren't in town to co-sign and I wanted to do it alone. I told them I could afford about $300/month and ended up with a deal for a new Accord at $306 a month. Problem is, it was for 66 months instead of 60, costing me an extra $1800! Depending on what you are looking for, I have found that if you buy a reliable car that lasts a long time it is better to buy used. Find a car that is a little over 3 years old and has 25,000 - 50,000 miles on it (the less the better). Many cars are built well enough to consistently last 150,000 miles or more if you take care of them. Let someone else take on the initial depreciation. Also, it is often times better to find a car that had been leased, as they tend to be taken care of a little better. Also, there are used car dealers that deal at wholesale prices. It helps if you know someone that is familiar with such a dealership and can vouch for them. A few years ago, a Nissan dealership sales manager recommended a used car dealer downtown for me. He called the owner and told him I was coming. I ended up buying a Lexus ES300 in very nice condition that was three 1/2 years old and had 45,000 miles on it. With an extended warranty to 100k miles, I paid less than I would have for a new Accord LX. Shop, take your time, don't be afraid to walk away and come back later, research online (edmunds.com and kbb.com are very helpful) and be fair. If you want to buy new, find the car you want and tell you will offer X dollars and allow them to take it or leave it. Being patient, educated and asking for recommended dealers or salespeople are probably the biggest ways to help yourself.
  5. Okay Brian I have a question........... How in the hell can two players have the same number? I don't think I have ever seen that before. Michigan's punter Ross Ryan? and also Kevin Grady were both wearing #3. What's up with that and how can they allow it?
  6. QUOTE(Sox Hustler @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 02:55 AM) If I was Burke I would look at my options with other teams. Not that I am against Widge but first Widge breaks camp with the team and now Casanova over him?? Plain and simple, Burke is not a catcher. He is a utility guy who can catch. He has never caught a full season in his career so teams won't seriously consider him as a backup. A third catcher in the right situation, perhaps.........
  7. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 02:47 AM) This is why you get the big bucks Rex. Speaking of, where is my check for this month?

A major relief effort hasn't been all of the helicopter rescues? All of the efforts to plug the levee breaks? C'mon, get real. It is practically impossible to get down there with few routes in. Trees are down all over the place. Emergency workers from who knows how many states are on their way. Could things be going better? Sure. But my God, this is a once-in-a-lifetime event and no matter how much you prepare for an event like this, you cannot be prepared for everything. They are getting supplies in. They are also getting shot at while doing so. A helicopter had to drop supplies today rather than land because of fear of a riot. There are truckloads of water going to the coast daily from all over, but let's remember you have a whole coastline in another state that cannot just be ignored. Lighten up!

All of this just makes me want to puke............ All emotion aside, let's make sure we all understand a few things. 1. The storm, less than a week before was only a Tropical Storm headed for Southern Florida. At the time, it was expected to perhaps restrengthen into a hurricane into the Gulf at a Category 1 or 2 level. At that same time, it was expected to turn toward the coast and head into Georgia crossing over the Florida panhandle. 2. Hurricanes are not very predictable. Even 2-3 days before when it was tracking toward New Orleans, no one knew for sure if it would go to New Orleans, jog east toward MS/AL or go further west. 3. It wasn't a Category 4 hurricane (I believe) until 2 days before it hit and then a Cat 5 the day before (I may be off one day on that). Keep in mind that many hurricanes weaken before they hit land and drop a Category or two. 4. So once it was determined that it was nearly inevitable, the evacuation order was executed. If they "planned" better and ordered the evacuation earlier, it would have had to cover the whole gulf coast because there was no way to tell for sure where the hurricane would strike land. 5. Evacuating almost a million people in the New Orleans metro area cannot be done in 2 days. They opened up south bound lanes of highways going into NO and made them northbound only. They asked people to leave. 6. Going neighborhood to neighborhood isn't feasible. The city is way to big for one, and two it would be nearly impossible to organize such a task that quickly. Keep in mind that the same people you want to do that, are ones that have to take care of their own families and safetey and getting them out of town. 7. When you factor in the poor, the sick, the elderly and the stubborn/stupid logistically it just isn't possible. So while it is easy to see in hindsight that more should have been done, I urge you to think about the situation and how it was practically impossible to do much more than they did. Sure relief efforts could be more organized, but let's also keep in mind that they are dealing with damage and/or deaths from three states, not just New Orleans. This is all very sad, but tossing around the blame right now to me, isn't very productive or fair.
  10. Maybe it was strictly the bat, DA. I'm not sure, just posing possibilities. While Burke may be good, Casanova could be better? Also, is it me or was Willie Harris missing from that list? Did I miss his name??
  11. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 01:53 AM) Can those that follow the minors give any sort of valid and/or logical reasoning for these moves? Perhaps I'll take a stab at it. Sanders has an ERA of 3.02 and has been a key lefty out of the bullpen in Charlotte. Diaz has an ERA of 4.95 and has been very inconsistent this year. Munoz has really struggled lately, including tonight. Perhaps they feel Casanova is a better defensive catcher than Burke?? Burke only played 46 of his 96 games this year at catcher, so it seems obvious to me they don't really see him as a catcher, but more as a utility player that can catch. Note he played most of those games at catcher while Casanova was hurt. Then again, perhaps it is simply because Casanova is hitting .314 with 7 HR and 18 RBI in the month of August while Burke is hitting .244? While I don't always agree with Sox personnel decisions, why is it so necessary to criticize decisions made with input from coaches who see these players daily? I personally don't have a feel for Casanova, but I do know that Sanders is tough against lefties, as evidenced by his 2.45 ERA and .216 BA against them.

A couple of tidbits I heard today.... -- in the Biloxi area, as they go through the areas looking for people still alive, they are marking areas with red paint where they find dead bodies. They can't do anything with them yet, and they are focused on trying to find those still alive, so they are just leaving them there for now. -- New Orleans rescue workers are completely ignoring the dead bodies floating in the water, in hopes of finding more people alive. At least hundreds of bodies are floating in the waters. -- Residents of St. Charles parrish which is just west of New Orleans were allowed back into the area today (with proper ID) to assess damage and gather belongings. They are allowed in for a day and then they must leave. They won't be allowed back in for at least a month.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 01:12 AM) Being from here, I know a lot of people from my wife's work and my work that have relatives there. My cousin's from where Mississippi and Alabama meet right on the gulf. No one has heard from him for days. The stuff that is coming out of there just crushes me, the things I'm hearing. I am seriously thinking of going to the shelters here (there are a LOT of people here) this weekend and spending some time with these people. kap, this may apply more to the New Orleans situation, but there are two web sites that I know of (I'm sure there are more) that are posting message boards and blogs allowing people to post messages either looking for people or those that are safe trying to communicate with others. The web sites are: NOLA WWL The in-laws of one of the guys at our office live in Pascagoula, which is right near where you are referring. They last heard from them after the hurricane started saying that there was already a foot of water in their house. They haven't been heard from since. I know that area was hit real hard with the storm surge. I was told by someone today that you can get into that area on Hwy 90 coming in from Alabama, in case you try and go look for them. That route may be closed off soon, but it is kind of a back way in. Hope they are all okay.
  14. A September with games against Detroit and Kansas City could help our hitting......... time shall tell
  15. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 10:22 PM) Jacksonville... the Dodgers' affiliate, correct? If so, any comments on any of the following (not sure which level these guys are at, but I'm sure they're in the organization) -- LaRoche, Guzman, or Billinglsy? All damned good players... as is Russ Martin. All are at Jacksonville. To make matters worse, Greg Miller is finally back on the mound and has an 0.96 ERA in 8 relief appearances. Seven of the Dodgers pre-season Top 10 prospects are on that team.
  16. FWIW the Barons have already clinched a playoff berth. Right now all they are playing for are playoff home games. If Jacksonville wins both halves they would get games 1,2, 4 and 5 at home during the playoffs. If Birmingham wins the 2nd half, it will be split 2 home, three away.
  17. QUOTE(Randar68 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 02:26 PM) I REALLY wish I had time to get down and see one of his last starts. As I've said before, I was underwhelmed last year in Kanny and would really like to see how he looks now because it's tough to argue with his success. In 1-2 months he may have vaulted from somewhere around 20 on the prospect list to the bottom of the top 10. That's pretty darn impressive. Get your ass down here randar....... we'll catch a game. I got the tickets, you're buying the beers!!

Well hello everyone..... I now have power again in Birmingham, but apparently still more than 150,000 people here are without. My parents said places were losing power in Evansville, IN today from the wind and rain. I'm floored by all of the sites, photos, etc. I have seen from New Orleans and MS. Apparently, Mobile and Gulf Shores AL are flooded big time as well. Someone posted an article on page 1 of this thread that discussed the possibilities of what may happen in this case and it seems to be coming true. I hate to say this, but New Orleans as we know it, is no more. This is going to get worse and turn into a major health hazard in addition to the damage to people and homes. I hate it, but it is kind of like a wreck on the side of the road, I can't keep from watching it and wanting to know more. Yet, I have a sick feeling in my stomach. As far as I know, my aunt and uncle are okay in Ocean Springs, MS. Last I heard, the just lost a couple of trees and water had gotten into their front yard, close to their front porch, but none inside. I can't get a phone call through down there, so it is frustrating.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 01:31 AM) What is the outlook for you in Bham? It looks as if we will get a ton of rain, up to 55mph wind gusts and a strong chance of off-shoot tornados. Just depends on exactly what path it takes as it travels inland.
  20. Rex Hudler replied to Heads22's topic in SLaM
My aunt and uncle live just outside of Biloxi. They both work at a hospital, so they can't leave. I usually don't get too worked up about hurricanes but after Ivan last year and Dennis (even though it wasn't that bad) this year, I have a bit of a different outlook. They are already talking about tornados flaring up in Alabama and Mississippi now.
  21. Rex Hudler replied to 3E8's topic in FutureSox Board
Quite the difference from Haeiger's last outing........ Today's win clinches a playoff berth for the Barons for the 6th year in a row. So far only one title (2002).
  22. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2005 -> 01:21 PM) Griffey says he hasn't talked to anyone with the Reds about a trade. Levine said Griffey told the Sox he was flattered but wanted to stay in Cincinatti. Levine said a week or so ago the Sox and Konerko were close on an extension, the Tribune has an article about Konerko's contract status and it said no negotiations have or will occur until the season is over. Levine said the Sox and Cubs would do nothing at the trade deadline. They were not earth shattering deals, but both teams made moves. Levine said there was no chance Freddy Garcia would sign an extension with the Sox, because he wanted to test free agency. He signed an extension a couple days later. Levine said he would stake his reputation on the Sox signing Omar Vizquel. Vizquel signed with San Francisco. Levine reported AJ Burnett to the Sox was pretty much a done deal. The teams were never close. I have no idea why a station would actually pay this guy money to be an "insider". He is a joke. I would like to propose a ban on Bruce Levine information, unless it is also being reported somewhere else. He is far too inaccurate. FWIW, I would have staked my reputation on the Sox signing Vizquel because it almost happened. As of the Friday night before, Vizquel told a friend of mine that he was going to sign with the Sox because he didn't think SF would give him the 3rd year he wanted. By Sunday, SF changed their tune and it was done. Things change.... guys like Levine can either take chances and report what is going on and trust the information they are getting, or sit back and wait until everyone else reports it and be the last guy on it. Journalists won't let that happen. They want the story, they want to be first. It's the nature of the beast.
  23. Where does the assumption Furcal will sign with the Cubs come from??
