  1. Story in Birmingham News This confirms his request, per Wally Backman.
  2. No, it is Carlos Maldonado. He's 24 and was originally signed by Seattle. He was traded to the Astros in 2000. He has a little bit of AAA time, but most of the last three years have been spent at AA Round Rock. Has never played a high number of games so it looks like he has shared time about everywhere he has been (exception 116 games in 2000 in AA). That will work out because he needs to share time with Jonathan Aceves in Birmingham.
  3. He must have watched Major League II before ST. No Willie Mays Hayes' needed!
  4. Bullard moved to bullpen. Eason will start tomorrow in his place.
  5. I pretty much agree with you on all points. I hated to lose Joe V, but if that is what had to be done to make the deal then so be it. I am still not 100% it was a great deal overall, but time will tell on that. Don't forget that even though he does not bear the sexy 95 mph fastball we like closers to have, Ed Almonte does nothing but keep saving games in Charlotte.
  6. Just make sure to tell Frank if he is going to charge the mound, to make sure it is not Nolan Ryan standing in front of him.
  7. Jim if you are still around, I'd be curious as to your thoughts about the beginning of the season in Birmingham, both personally and from a team standpoint. No soft pieces. We want honest input and no dancing around issues. That too much to ask?
  8. He is the anti-Corwin Malone. He gets K's by knowing how to pitch, not overpowering hitters. in my mind, he is the key to the trade which make it bareable. He is definitely holding his own right now.

  10. Backman's style is the same as the way he played.
  11. Yes, Quintero was traded along with Alex Fernandez for Jiminez.
  12. i want to know that too.. and no one has a good answer yet... is he hurt or is it theres just not enough room at the inn for him to do anything else but dh.......nobody i have talked with yet seems to know for sure........... I'll dig up an answer Tuesday.

Let's not wait. Let's enshirine him into Cooperstown right now!
  14. I, for one, can comment on Backman.
  15. As long as I'm remembering right, Doublem pretty much tended to believe Miles has to prove himself at AAA first and then in the majors, as he thought Miles was more of a one year wonder. I have said this from the very beginning. This is his year to prove he is a legit player and not a career Minor Leaguer. His spring put him off to a great start. I'd like to know why he hasn't played much lately in Charlotte.
  16. The big reason I like Backman is he is my kind of manager, the small ball manager. Yeah, but do the White Sox have a small ball team? I am all for JM fired , but Backman is just another JR cheap way out as a manager, Backman will work for peanuts on First job, I see T. Bevington #2 AGAIN and it SUCKS. Get a guy with experience for once. What makes you think Backman would work for peanuts? He's a former Big Leaguer with other options. He could have left the Sox this year for a coaching job with another Major League team He is very much in demand across the Majors, not a cheap way out. My concern is does the current Sox personnel match with Wally's style. I think he will be a good manager soon, but I know damn good and well that the first time a guy gets thrown out by five feet because Wally was overagressive that you guys will want to crucify him. His aggressive style makes things happen, but it also creates blunders at times. Some accuse him of running himself out of innings. Others note how he manufactures runs out of nothing. So far, it has worked more often than not for Birmingham.
  17. He "should" be on the ML team, yet he can't find any PT at the AAA level? There's something wrong with that if you ask me. The bottom line is that it's 18 AB's and 0 walks. Even if you only have 1 AB every 10 days, you ought to be able to work at least 1 walk in 18 attempts. I think the person who should be given the benefit of the doubt is the guy who we're going to depend on to get on base for guys like Frank, Magglio, Paul, and Carlos -- D'Angelo Jimenez. He's done a solid job for the Sox since we started playing him at 2B, and yet people still think he's not worthy of being here. What kind of logic is that? I never said Jiminez didn't belong. I only said Miles would be in Chicago. Made no mention of the starting lineup. And yes, something has to be wrong. He has not played 3 days in a row, so I wonder if he is hurt. He is not playing all that much because Harris is still KW's boy. With Harris, Hummel, Nunez and Miles, you are truly looking at 4 starters for 3 positions, so the AB's have to get spread around. I still think you are nuts if you are worried about a guys walk rate after 4 games. If he plays tomorrow and walks three times in 4 plate appearances, all of a sudden he has 3 walks in 19 AB's. You gonna sing a different tune then? That's why averages don't mean s*** until they have played at least 20 or 30 games.
  18. He also said that is temporary. Likely that will end up only being an intro and running once or twice before something else goes there. He said he is not sure what they will put there. May be movie type stuff or it may be a photo or photos, or more news. He said he was still tinkering, but they wanted to get the new site up in conjunction with their home opener.
  19. Miles has only played in 4 games. Give him the benefit of the doubt, will ya? Averages don't mean s*** with that small of a sample size. If the Sox weren't afraid of losing Josh Paul, Aaron Miles would be in Chicago right now. For some reason Miles isn't playing that much in Charlotte. They have a lot of guys and are overloaded at some positions. Miles has DH'd in 3 of his 4 starts, I believe.
  20. It happened last year when he was pitching for the Rangers. He hit someone in the middle of the back the day after they had a big brawl or something. Interesting thing was the Rangers came back and started him again the next night. Not too often you see a guy as the starting pitcher two days in a row! If I recall correctly (and I could be a little fuzzy on the memory here) his first pitch sailed way behind the batter before the second one plunked him.
  21. RDW, you want a HSC fight? Anything for you, my love! Hey HSC! NASCAR sucks! Alabama Tide suck! Well, they would suck if they had all their teeth! Ok, RDW, stand back because now we can have a brawl with HSC! CW, I agree NASCAR does suck. And I can do without the damned Crimson Tide too. Q: How do we know that toothpaste was invented in Alabama? A: If it were invented anywhere else it would have been called teethpaste. That ought to get her riled up. ;-)
  22. They are doing some really cool things. I talked to the guy tonight who is doing their website and he is working on incorporating some video highlights, like ESPN is now doing. He was shooting some test video right behind home plate tonight and we talked for a bit. Sounds like there is more to come.
  23. I'm sure hsc would LOVE to buddie up with you on such road trip...LOL! You'll be coming too, right? I mean you have your boy Cotts as your reason...
  24. Not sure. Perhaps throwing out of the bullpen was due to having two off days in a row (one a rainout). Sometimes they skip a start for a guy to get the rotation back in order, but I didn't hear anything last night. Than again, it could be because he had a meltdown in his first outing (4 wild pitches and a hit batter in one inning).
