QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 12:12 PM) I retract the remark about Kentucky kids, I believe I misread your comments. I thought you were saying that the children of illegals are the poorly performing kids. Now that I slowed down and reread, I understand I made a terrible assumption. Sorry. Fair enough.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 08:27 AM) Interesting that many studies and practical experience here, shows that immigrant kids perform far better in science and math then the native population. But that's fine, your "superior" Kentucky children can then pack crops and clean toilets and make them purdy. Exactly! ... The immigrant kids (usually Asian or European, however) perform better than ours. Which was the basis for my "Crap schools" comment, at which you seemed to take offense. Our elementary and secondary schools are crap, thanks to the centralization of the educational system under the NEA. This should be handled on a state and local level with minimal interference from the Fed level. Of course, that's not the liberal way. But it is the right way. I won't even comment on your remark about Kentucky children. It doesn't deserve a response from me and such a response would probably get me some time off from Soxtalk.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 08:36 AM) I sure hope not. It will be one of the biggest mistakes we can make. 100% agreed.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 08:36 AM) McCain seems like such an easy choice on that side, I can't believe he isn't just crushing everyone. I'll tell you something my friend, and I mean this merely as a statement of reality and not any disrespect to you or your views, but there is a vast majority of people north of South Texas that feel very very strongly about the border/immigration issue and they don't agree with you. That issue is also a deal breaker for most voters. Having said that, there are so many problems with the GOP candidates not named McCain that I think he'll win the nomination unless there is an open convention. If that happens, think Gingrich. Edit to add: I hadn't read your remark in the other thread about KY kids when I typed this post. It would have had a different tone, I believe.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 02:10 AM) I think they deserve more than half credit... he wasnt drafted in one of the first rounds and virtually all his minor league time was with us.. We identified him as a kid with tools and we groomed him. When he was traded, he was not as far along development wise as Anderson. We all know how that turned out. I think half is being generous.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 10:28 PM) Chris Young. I'll give the Sox half credit for him. They seem pretty good a developing AAA outfielders. The D'Backs took him from there to the majors. And at this point, Young ain't exactly Willie Mays. He still has a few things to prove. So, half credit for potential.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 10:18 PM) He is a White Sox prospect, so we are probably wrong. But the one good thing is that the Sox organization, although terrible at developing talent, does seem to produce solid OFs. Maybe Shelby is the next one. Let's see ... Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee, Aaron Rowand and .... and .... and ... hmmmm. I'm stuck.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 10:10 PM) NOt if no one meets the Twins' price. I believe it's just short of a foregone conclusion that he'll be traded.

I don't consider this newsworthy at all. Since it was announced that the agreement had happened, I've always 'expected' Ramirez to be there for ST.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 09:02 PM) So that we kick poorly performing kids out of our schools So that we kick poorly performing kids out of our schools and so that we have repeated disease outbreaks due to sewage contaminated water? Well, we wouldn't need the illegal migrant workers any more.
-
QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) I would not say our schools are crap, we allow every student to enter and stay in school. Other countries kick those kids out. Makes for a difficult comparison of test scores. Our crap schools attract students from all over the globe. Deadly outbreaks from contaminated water are very rare in this country. Even better is our sewer systems. America, Love it or Leave it ... or change it.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 02:53 PM) One other little wrinkle in this plan I learned about yesterday is that it completely screws over the elderly, and the longer you've been working, the more you're screwed by it. Think of it this way...you've been working 45 years, paying your taxes at say 30% (pick a rate, whatever). You're 65. Looking forwards to a retirement. Maybe buy a yacht or something. Then suddenly, the government switches to a sales tax instead of the income taxes you've been paying for your whole life. Suddenly, all that income you've earned that was taxed at that 30% rate is going to wind up being taxed again when you go out purchasing anything. The only things that aren't taxed are whatever monies you were able to put away into tax-free accounts; any money you saved that you've already paid the taxes on will get taxed 2x, once when it's earned during your 40 years of working before the switch, and once when you spend it after the switch when the price of everything goes up 40%. ... Which can be interpretted in two ways. First, this will never happen because the baby boomers still have a very large voting block and they won't stand for it. Or, it will happen because that's where the money is, and gov't will always go that route. I'm betting on the latter.

I guess this slipped past me, but I didn't realize they had moved him from 2B to CF.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) As are the GOP candidates. Contrary to what some seem to think, none of these guys and gals are dummies. Maybe. I'd have to hear them pronounce 'nuclear' first.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) Style and personality sure as hell didn't help us over the last 7 years, now did it? Didn't help the other side either.
-
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:35 PM) I think the public is really looking at honesty this election cycle. The 3 Dems are not that far apart on issues. Style and personality will go a long way. Yes, I agree. We've been cursed by that aspect since the Kennedy-Nixon debate.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:19 PM) I agree with this. But my point was what was heard in the ear of the beholder, to totally corrupt an old saying. Cliche' would have been a better way to finish that post.
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) Which would indicate that Edwards' and Clinton's answers were the worst of the bunch - they basically said they get too involved, too emotional. Basically, Obama gave the more honest but less politically savvy response. Edwards and Clinton gave the textbook responses. I agree with this. But my point was what was heard in the ear of the beholder, to totally corrupt an old saying.
-
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) I agree that his answer sounded great. That wasn't my point. He really didn't give us a "weakness". Caring too much isn't a weakness. On one hand, I can see your point. On the other, letting emotion get in the way during decision making can definitely be a weakness.

Pardon my typos.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 12:56 PM) In all honesty I think all 3 had good performances overall. But I found their actual responses to this question.... Obama Edwards Clinton I read each response one after the other, then read each of them again. I heard Obama say he was an unorganized slob and Hillary say she was the pushy b**** a lot of us think she is. Edwards answer was by far the best in my opoinion, and I don't like the man at all. Bueauty in the eye of the beholder apparently is transferable to audio as well.
-
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) Clinton and Edwards sounded like typical politicians. Just another example of why myself and many others find Obama refreshing. I suspect you heard Clinton and Edwards sound like typical politicians and heard Obama sound like, well, refreshing. I didn't see the debate, but I'd guess that those that support the other two would paraphrase quite differently.

QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 10:20 AM) No worries. I am just teasing. I understood what you meant. I knew you were teasing, but still it was a poor choice.
