  1. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) While a ball slices if its hit down the line and hit a certain way, the same thing happens down the LF line with LH hitters and RH hitters the ball will hook. The reason RF is more difficult in general, obviously ballpark configuration and sun and wind can change this, is the throws. Very rarely does a LF have to throw the ball to 1B. The throw to 3rd is a lot more difficult from RF. Besides, anyone who has played the OF regularly will have figured out "slices and hooks" especially major leaguers. If that's difficult for them, they shouldn't be out there. Why does Ross Gload come to mind?
  2. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) I'd go only one to the Giants. We need the other one to spin off to the Yankees for Phil Hughes. Too bad we don't have three. We could probably get Buchholz from Boston. Hey. I'm just commenting on the discussion that is currently taking place in this thread.
  3. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:44 PM) If you owned the theater and you had an employee who would be costing you money by attacking your customers, should you not have the right to terminate their employment? If a McDonalds employee followed someone out the restaurant and started yelling at them, it would seem reasonable to take action regarding their employment. She basically just pissed off your customer. That ain't cool. But your point is strong, and without the facts, we're just debating shadows which look different to you and I. Oh, I can certainly see your and Mike's points. I think it's a matter of what your priority is. Is it the right of the business owner (and this will be a totally biased comment ... to cowtow to the big powerful politician's wishes) or is it the right of the citizen to question her elected representative, as a simple citizen on the street (agiain, biased). Based on what I know, and only what I know, I'm leaning toward the rights of the citizen exercizing her constitutional rights.
  4. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:49 PM) I was just thinking, when Clinton was elected, I was thirty or so, and after 12 years of Reagan / Bush, a sax blowing, Fleetwood Mac playing, President "my age" was cool. Now, we're getting tossed aside as old voting for his wife Maybe there is something to the age thing. You know, I don't really know if I can make my point here. It's just that the Haight/Ashbury culture has pretty much had it's chance, didn't really do anything with it. This is their last shot at relevence, imo. Sure, SanFran is still very liberal, but the SanFran type of liberism is not mainstream America. There is a level of liberism that could grab the heartstrings of mainstream America, but the SF version is not it. In other words, I believe their time has passed. They may sneak on this election, because of Bush's total disregard of the constitution. But if they don't do it now, they never will. Basically, it's s*** or get off the pot.
  5. QUOTE(ptatc @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) While this is true, I think people get far too caught up in the arm strength and throwing runners out. The more important aspect is running down and catching the ball. RF is generally more difficult to play a ball because with more RH hitters the "slicing" ball is more difficult to judge than the more straight trajectory hit "pulling" the ball to left. There are many more chances to catch (or miss) the ball than "holding runners." Your point is well taken here on the 'slicing' thing. But my point was more about the threat of a runner getting thrown out than actual number times it occurs. If you a have right fielder that can cover ground and throw well, they have a tendency to stop instead of go. And that, perhaps more importantly, effects the runners trying for home as well as the runners heading to third.
  6. QUOTE(ptatc @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) This is true depending on the difference between the two players. Is a .05 better OBP worth having the slower guy on base? Here's a thought. How many GIDP did PK have with Pods on in front of him vs. having slower player in front? A faster runner will cause PK's horrible GIDP numbers to be lower, which again only helps the team. Currently, I don't know who is the better player JO or CQ. Obviously, if one is far ahead of the other you pick that one but so far I'm not sure either has. This brings up another point. Not only does a potential base stealer effect the pitcher, but it also effects the defensive positioning of the miidle infielders. They have a blatent tendency to cheat toward second base which opens up holes on both sides of the infield. Granted, anyone on base with less than two outs and they'll play at double play depth, but it's even more pronounced when there is a base stealing threat on first.
  7. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) Wait till the mkt closes. How many bullets are left in the Fed's gun? Knife fight, anyone?
  8. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:36 PM) I think that is over simplifying things. What is also happening here is the old white guy guard, who has been pandering to women and minorities, face their first real test of faith. After decades of proclaiming, we're your party, old white guys have to actually share some of that power. That may be as big or bigger than the social, aged stratified groups. That, my friend, is a very good point.
  9. As I said gentlemen, I don't know if she had inside info or not. And I used those words to emphasize the possibility. But, based on that being an unknown at this point, my opinion is that she had every right to question an elected representative ... and I emphasize the word representative as well ... on the way he was representing her as a constituant.
  10. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) I think that's exactly right. This is old guard versus new guard. The transtion is occurring no matter what - the question is, will the new guard have enough power THIS year to get the candidate they want in there. Didn't I just say that?
  11. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) As mentioned, we do not have all the facts, but when has that stopped us before I understand that, but she just finished as her job, hosting him. I don't think you can just "clock out" and move 3" past the front door. The connection was from her job and it seems there is room there for abusing. Put another way, my employer's name opens doors. If I use that name to promote my own agenda, I would expect to be fired. I don't know if that was the situation or not. All I know is she was 'on the street'. She had her daughter with with her and just may have come from home. Regardless, once she crosses that threshold and is off the clock, and if she's not wearing a uniform or something, she's nothing more than a citizen and every right to ask her elected representative a question about his policies.
  12. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:13 PM) There are a number of ways that parties keep their members in line. As you move up the food chain, you have less and less restrictions, but Edwards isn't the most powerful. He should be thinking about his next race and who will help him the most. Hint: It probably isn't Obama. I believe the Dem party is in a transistion phase from the old guard to the new. The San Fransisco hippies of 1968 are on their way out. This is their last shot. Hillary represents them. Obama represents the Gen X democrats and they will be THE force in the party after '08. It's just a matter if the hippies can hold the fort through this election or not.
  13. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:15 PM) That's pretty much how I feel. If she would have done it somewhere else, fine, freedom of speech and all, but when you are at your place of employment, you cross into the line of swinging your fist into someone else's nose. This is someone elses bottom line we are talking about potentially. She was on the Street!
  14. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:09 PM) Bingo. I think you and I are on the same path here. There are certainb venues that I have to be very careful about what I say and do. Certainly a work function, while I am in uniform would carry different expectations than a public events away from work. If she was away from work, I agree with YAS's comments, but at work, different rules. I believe I stated she was out on the street as nothing more than a citizen. She was not "at work", not on the clock and her daughter's obvious lack of judgement should not have cost her the job. Embarrassing yes, worthy of having a senator getting your ass fired? No. After all, the kid with the big mouth is about 12. Should mama have raised her kid to respect adults? Absolutely! But should the actions of a child in a public, and I emphasize public, setting cost someone a job because it pisses off a powerful senator? Not in this country, it shouldn't.
  15. Just heard, fwiw, that the powers that be in the Edwards camp are saying the health of Elizabeth Edwards had no factor in the JE's decision to 'suspend' his campaign.
  16. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) and dont put it past her to put a carrot in front of him and then pull it later after she is elected. she'd do it. LOL. I don't trust the little lady either. But then, I haven't heard anything of substance from the esteemed senator from the great state of Illinois either. Change is great ... but give me details. And I mean him, not you.
  17. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:56 PM) Yeah, I said that exact thing in a response to Athomeboy earlier. That's why I think he's likely to endorse someone pretty soon. I have a gut feeling he'll endorse Obama unless Hillary ... ummm ... scratches his back.
  18. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:50 PM) And I'm just seeing highlights and as we all know, there is always more to the story, it is never perfectly clear. Exactly. here's what I know and heard. And I heard the audio from the tape. Ryan was not out of line in her questioning. There was no vulgarity. She said basically this ... again, I'll use quotes but I'm paraphrasing due to not having a transcript in front of me ... "Senator McConnell, can I ask you about the Iraq war? Senator? Senator McConnell, can I ask you about the Iraq war? Senator McConnell, what are you hiding? " ... Basically, that was as far as she went. Her voice was 'forceful' but not too much so, imo. And know, I have no idea what she was refering to with the 'hiding' question.
  19. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:43 PM) USD? What is USD? The only USD i knwo is University of SOuth Dakota which is where my wife went to school. Unless I'm way off base, you just answered your own question.
  20. QUOTE(max power @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:35 PM) Why is right really that much harder/more important to play than left? It's all about the arm. Holding runners from getting from 1st to 3rd on a single. Covering ground fits into that equation as well. If you are slower getting to the ball, the opposition knows to try and get to 3rd on that single to right.
  21. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:25 PM) Yes I believe that is the case in some states. Not sure which ones. But also keep in mind, he was running in the teens in a lot of states - he would have gotten delegates a few here and there. I thought that was an across the board rule for the Dems, but maybe not. Keep in mind, that he just suspended his campaign, so he won't get above 15% in any state now.
  22. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:10 PM) I don't want to give up Broadway either. Neither of them are just throw-ins, and if the Giants are as close as they seem to being able to do this just based on their need for Crede alone, I've got a tough time giving up our two closest-to-the-majors SP prospects after already giving up one earlier this year. I have no faith in Sisco to be a competent starter (or even pitcher) at the major league level unless he figures his s*** out. I thought the discussion was Egbert or Broadway, not both. I don't want to just give either of them away, but if adding one of them will get you a proven ML pitcher when the main piece you sending off is a health risk/free agent virtual certainty which is for most part slightly above average at his position, then yes, do it.
  23. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) I believe defense is more important than offense because of the impact on pitching. The comparison of players is Anderson v. Owens/Quintin and the result of Cabrerra leading off v. Owens. Swisher moves to left with Anderson in center. In the day and age of finite pitch counts for a game, hits that are not taken away and errors that are made create stress on pitchers and more importantyl reduce the length with which they are in game. One error and two plays that are not made are an extra inning of work and possibly 15 pitches. Considering the fact that as a general rule your starters are the best pitchers, you want them to get the most innings or outs, and if a shoddy defense gives away two or three a game, that limits the effectiveness of your starters (again, best pitchers) and puts more stress on your bullpen (weaker) pitchers. In fact, that's massive.
  24. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) I don't think so. By going out and announcing the suspension of the campaign, he guarantees he'll only get a very small number of delegates, which takes away any leverage or power he would have. No, I'd say he'll endorse pretty soon, either just before or just after Super Tuesday. Don't you have to get at least 15% to get delegates? If that's the case, his delegate count is carved in stone.
  25. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:13 PM) I'm wondering if she used her position as the Theater Manager to gain access? Since it was at the theater, or am I misreading those statements? I honestly don't know. She may have had insider information as to his schedule or something. And, let me make this clear, I have not seen the video. I'm just going on what I have heard on local coverage as to what has happened, and am trying to give an as honest portrayal of the situation as I can.
