  1. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) He better learn how to hit righties if he's going to really be our everyday CFer. Anderson is a 4th OF who plays absolutely fantastic defense, hits lefties at a decent rate, and can't hit righties. There is nothing wrong with that, unless of course you don't have a starting CF to speak of.
  2. QUOTE (scenario @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) You're right. What was I thinking? Positively, and I can't blame you. It happens.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:41 PM) I believe the White Sox are 2 for 30 out of the leadoff spot this season. Keep bashing BA. I'll take your word for it with that stat, which is unbelieveable.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:40 PM) Not really comparing, just amazed at the symmetry. That team was actually relatively compareable to other recent teams. The difference being that team had FAR better pitching, and could manage to score one to three runs and win 1-0, 2-1, or 3-2 when the home runs weren't there. Sox teams since then haven't had nearly as good of pitching, and couldn't manage ANY runs without homers to boot.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:35 PM) In 2005. they won 1-0 on opening day, 1-0 the first game after the All Star break, and 1-0 the WS clincher. The 2005 team, as it turns out, was one of the greatest (and luckiest) teams in the history of baseball. Comparing anything to that is a waste of time.
  6. I really hope the Bulls win tonight. That way, I can gather up all the false hope possible for the Orlando series. It's interesting that "The Sports Guy" is afraid of Derrick Rose.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:33 PM) How many games have the Sox won the past 3 years scoring 1 run? Probably about as many as most others teams, which is very few.
  8. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:28 PM) Jeff Marquez convinced Ozzie with his non-existant sinker. I believe it's Ed Farmer who calls a bad sinker a "stinker". Marquez throws more stinkers than anybody you'll ever find.
  9. Baseball is really priviledged to have two of the best right handed hitters of all time in their prime with Pujols and Cabrera, and even Manny Ramirez is close to being in his prime despite his age.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:23 PM) Yep, there's no point in getting worried about it right now. I wasn't expecting a 95 win team this year, as it was obvious there were some holes that might not have been filled. I will say that this team would get better if KW decides to stick Alexei in CF and call up Beckham. That's what I would do if I ran the show. I think Alexei's best defensive position at the end of the day might be CF too, although that's obviously based on limited knowledge. And yeah, the one positive I know I've seen is I thought the only chance the Sox had to win the division was if the division was bad, and I think that just might be the case.
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) We might have the worst 7 through 1 hitters in baseball. A.J. and Ramirez will figure it out eventually. Unless of course I'm wrong, in which case we'll finish no higher than 3rd place.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) The organization and Linebrink never really said how worried they were that Linebrink was going to require major surgery if he came into ST this offseason and had no life on his pitches. Linebrink talked to a doctor friend of my dad's in February, and he thought he might be at 60% when the season started. That's not a surprise. I am starting to think he's hurting going into most seasons, which is why he's usually hurt by July.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:15 PM) All of our hitters have looked AWFUL against offspeed pitches so far this year. I feel like I've been saying that for at least 10 years now.
  14. QUOTE (daa84 @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:13 PM) yeah, but i just meant as a stop gap until getz gets back, because fields really doesnt strike out anymore than lillibridge does, and also has shown a keen eye so far this year JD looked like he had never seen a slider in his life in that AB There really isn't a perfect option, that's true. Fields might actually be the best option at this point, I'd have a hard time arguing he's not. Lillibridge couldn't hit pony league pitching though, so that's a bad point of reference.
  15. QUOTE (daa84 @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:10 PM) no s*** man, i couldn't agree more.....we hear this BS conjecture of wanting obp guys instead of prototypical laedoff hitter...and they march dewayne wise and his .254 career obp, and his .238 career obp into the leadoff.....now i know getz is hurt, but why not fields leading off and betemit playing 2b???? I'm generally not a big "OMG HE STRIKES OUT TOO MUCH!!!11" guy, but Fields whiffs WAY too much to be hitting leadoff. Not to mention, when he's at his best, he's more of a guy who produces runs, and hitting him leadoff kind of offsets that.
  16. QUOTE (scenario @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:09 PM) Don't write this off yet. Detroit's bullpen is beyond horrible. Ozzie has written it off, as evidenced by putting in Richard and MacDougal.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) So after we fall to 4-4, I have to say I'm extremely happy with how things are going. Some of our big question marks, Quentin and Linebrink, look fantastic so far. Fields is having a good start, and showing a lot of improvement from his miserable 2008. To make things better, the AL Central doesn't look extremely strong this season. Considering how awful we swung the bats in the first few games, I can't complain at all. Meh. Quentin wasn't a question mark, and Linebrink hasn't proven anything (he's a great 1st half pitcher who struggles and/or gets hurt in the 2nd half). We're probably going to leave Tampa 5-7, and although the division is horrible and our pitching IF it stays healthy is pretty good, I'm not overwhelmingly happy.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) Umm...its not over yet. Yeah it is. On occasion, Clayton tricks people (even his biggest haters like me) into thinking he's useful, but he's really nothing more than a guy who puts pitch after pitch on a tee.
  19. It amazes me Clayton Richard was a SCHOLARSHIP QUARTERBACK AT MICHIGAN.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) I just hate how Ozzie seems determined to have a fast player leadoff, no matter how awful they are. If Carl Lewis was on the Sox for a game, he'd leadoff. Betemit desperately needs more playing time against RHP...or else the Swisher trade looks even worse. Well to be fair to Ozzie this year, his chocies are limited. Our CF options all suck, and we're terrible at 2B with Getz gone (and he hasn't proven anything either). Other than that, who can we hit leadoff, Fields? Ramirez? Yeah, not good. This is much more on KW in my opinion.
  21. The bigger problem with today is it will probably start a stretch of 4 losses in 5 days. I'd be surprised at anything other than 1-3 in Tampa.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2009 -> 01:50 PM) What were people expecting? You play 7 righties against a pitcher who destroys them, and you're not going to have a lot of offense. We need Getz back ASAP, because we have one of the worst hitters in baseball getting the most at bats. The bigger problem is our best offensive chance in the game involved Brian Anderson and Brent Lillibridge batting. That is going to tend to lead to problems, even if a lefty were on the mound.
