QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 06:46 PM) i hope kenny keeps that in mind. I'm not ready to watch two years of rookies learning how to play. I'm not ready to watch two years of this mediocre crap with veterans who are on their last legs trying to carry the load for our poorer young players while the good ones toil in the minor league system waiting for their chance (with the exception being Beckham, who was rushed up). It was a nice win today (although more exciting than it should have been), but we had a great opportunity to get right within sniffing distance of 1st place (if not closer) heading into this 12 game homestand to start June, and we went an unacceptable 4-8. This ship better get righted within the next month or so or the full fledged youth movement will be afoot.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:37 PM) Miller Park is outstanding. #2 that I've seen behind PNC. Anybody else going to the Reds series? I will be at the first 2 games of the Reds series, but unfortunately I will not be at the Milwaukee series. All you guys that will be make sure to make some noise and have it so the White Sox fan base is heard from though!

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 08:08 AM) After listening to a reporter ask Plaxico yesterday about his next team possibilities if he gets away with his thigh shooting incident, I am starting to come to terms with the fact that he has a very good chance of becoming a Bear, past be damned I would have no problem with the Bears bringing in Plaxico, in fact I would strongly approve of it. I still think he's going to be in jail during the 2009 regular season though. -

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 09:23 AM) NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown may be hitting the road, Cleveland front office not happy with the Eastern Conference Finals I've never thought he was a particularly good coach, and I couldn't blame Cleveland a bit for firing him after the pantsing he was given by Stan Van Gundy in the Eastern Conference Finals. I personally think Stan Van Gundy should have won Coach of the Year during the regular season anyways for the job he did with that team between Dwight Howard and the 3 point shooters and continuing to play well without Jameer Nelson. As for the Cavs, assuming they do can Mike Brown, they should go after a coach who is more uptempo. Cleveland does not run NEARLY enough (that's my biggest problem with Brown) which is simply stupid considering the have the most unstoppable fast break force in the history of basketball on their team. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 09:30 AM) That's lunacy. I can tell there'd be a LOT of teams out there who would love to have Mike Brown as their head coach. Cleveland didn't make it to the NBA Finals because they're basically a 1 man team. Mo Williams ain't an all-star, West is a good role player at best, Z is quickly declining and Vareajao is nothing but a dirty scrapper. That's Danny Ferry's fault not Mike Brown's. I wonder if they'll go after Boozer if the off-season though, he'd be a very good fit for them down low again, especially if Wallace retires. I agree with a lot of what you say too actually in addition to my above post about Mike Brown, which is why I would probably fire Danny Ferry too. I don't think Mike Brown is a very good coach, and I know Danny Ferry has done a poor job surrounding LeBron with the proper talent he needs to win a title. Combine that with the fact that LeBron might leave next summer, and desperate times call for desperate measure in order to try and keep him. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 11:12 PM) MacDougal continues to look good. Also, Masset's pitching in the same game. He looks absolutely awesome this season. 95 mph fastball with fantastic offspeed pitches. MacDougal could be good to great for the next 10 years and I would still have ZERO regrets about letting him go. As for Masset, I'm not sure what has gotten into him. We always heard from people like Steve Stone how great his stuff was, but I never saw it personally when he pitched for us and the numbers never bore it out. Eventually, the law of averages will catch up with him and he will regress to the means in my opinion. Either that, or maybe he found a nice stash of something which is helping out his stuff a little bit.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:18 PM) Maybe we'll see KW offer extensions to someone like Dye at the Sox's price, and if they don't agree to it, they'll trade them. I'd love to see Dye get a 2 yr deal and return as our DH. That way, you can go out and get a RF for next year who bats lefty. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Dye is kept around for a couple more years as a DH, unless of course we get a really good offer for him (aka NOT Homer Bailey straight up).

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:15 PM) As well it should. If there is a piece to be had that will help this team down the road, a move will be made. I will say however, even if the Sox are well out of it, you probably will see someone like Dye kept around if a proper package can't be sent. To the casual fan, it sends a pretty bad message to see your World Series MVP shipped out for two single A players. I'm not saying it's right, but the organization does have to acknowledge that fact. However, I fully expect players like DJ and Dotel to be sold to the highest bidder come July, if the Sox feel they are out of contention of course. I agree that a veteran or two will be kept, they won't sell everybody because of (1) the casual fan and perhaps more importantly (2) they won't get the right package for everybody. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:16 PM) you may also see KW do a trade deadline for a bigger contract with a completely out of contention team (similar to the Peavy deal). Wouldn't mean they're going for it this year, but the Sox identify a good younger player with a longer term contract and snap it up That wouldn't surprise me either.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:13 PM) Wow, those scouts about Beckham must be watching another game. He hasn't even seen an inside fastball since he's been up, it seems. He's just getting under things and popping them up to the right side instead of driving them. If you ask enough scouts about anybody, no matter how good or potentially good, you'll get some negative opinions. There is a reason some teams are good and some teams are awful. -
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:11 PM) right, imagine what the Mets would give for PK if he continues with his good season and Delgado's prognosis is iffy, all it would take is one other team (Red Sox?) to be interested to get a lot for him I think most reasonably minded people aren't going to get upset if we trade veterans in July while appearing to be out of the race if we get a good haul in return. And I trust that we will if such a scenario happens. I don't think we are going to sell off all of our veteran parts though, some people will stay.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:08 PM) Which is exactly why you WON'T see a firesale, and the reason why the Sox are going about "rebuilding" in the fashion they are. The Sox are in the middle of a rebuild process as we speak. It started last year, and it is continuing this year. Instead of going the traditional route, Williams has been rebuilding this organization while also keeping a veteran face on the squad to continue to compete and fill the stands. They don't have a bad contract to speak of, have created a nice pool of talent in the high minors, and set themselves up nicely for a scary economic future, and still found the time to win a division title last year, and also trying to compete this season. Just because the Sox don't slap you in the face and tell you they are rebuilding doesn't mean it's not happening. They are just trying to be more creative than your typical team going through this process. Shame on them. Well this I agree with, and I trust the rebuilding process going on even with the fact I'm not the world's biggest KW fan. But I think if this team (the 2009 one individually that is) continues to trend down, the rebuilding process will "slap us in the face" a little more come the trade deadline.

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:06 PM) Kenny has never sold before, most of his trades are done well before the deadline. He was nixed once with Peavy, it has been eerily quiet lately. The only other time he had a situation where it was an obvious sell situation was 2007, and he didn't have a lot to sell. He has way more he can trade away and get a lot in return for this time around.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) yeah, I think KW viewed this team as a crapshoot, it's an old team with potential firepower that could keep the team in it. It's not ridiculous to think Danks or Floyd have a good game and keep them into against the pen, and the pen, especially tomorrow against a used Tigers pen. Again, I don't have a ton of hope for this team this year, but with the fans reaction to Beckham it shows the fanbase is positive, then maybe some pieces come back at the deadline and 40m in payroll off the books. Even with it's growth, our fanbase is a very smart fanbase in my opinion. Most people have at least some concept of everything going on right now. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:03 PM) Absolutely not, it's terrible thinking. I think we're rushing Poreda, as he'll need 100 pitches to get past the 5th. Beckham is a special situation, and I think getting used to the speed of the majors is a great experience for him. I think we rushed Beckham a bit, but he'll be fine. I think he's a guy that can take struggling at the major league level as a positive learning experience if it continues (which is a very rare type of guy). -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:02 PM) I honestly haven't felt this good about the future in quite some time. We have some real nice building blocks already in the majors and some actual talent in the minors. Not to mention, we're going to have plenty of money to play with. This team has a bright future. I 110 percent agree with this, and I think the growth of our fanbase the last half decade is a positive that needs to be mentioned as well. I'm just pessmistic about this year, and more specifically, I think trading some of our veterans at the deadline would make our future even more bright.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:01 PM) right a fire sale now probably won't reap as much as you could get on July 31st... even a very good pen arm can get a decent bidding war going between two teams and you could pull out a higher level prospect Well that's why I won't get mad at KW if he waits. You can get more the longer you wait, and even the ultimate pessimist about this team (me) will admit that this division is awful, and thus you're a hot week or two away from being right back in the race (as we saw in late May). -
QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:58 PM) I wasn't making a point about people wanting to see the 2005 roster. I was making a point about people wanting to see players they recognize and that are good players. Firesale or "Youth Movement" would include a large roster of unproven players that will take at least a couple years to get decent, and we WOULD see a sharp decline in ticket sales putting up a losing record for two years or more Even if we assume you're right, you can't just keep trying to win when you don't have the players to do so in order to fill the ballpark. We're not the Yankees or Red Sox in terms of payroll, and thus at some point, we have to have at least a brief rebuilding phase. I still think our fanbase has grown immeasurably the last 5 years though, and although attendance might drop during a rebuilding phase, it won't drop to pre ballpark renovation levels again.
-
QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:52 PM) This team is going to be in bad bad shape over the next 5 years at least. They're going to lose a s***load of money off ticket sales after the whole 2005 WS team is completely off the roster, it's going to be very Marlins-like in the stands I'm sorry, but this post is just completely false. Our system is in much better shape now, and people don't show up to see people from the 2005 team. They show up because our fan base has grown immensely over the last 5 years.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:50 PM) Yep, but it won't be done until July. No way KW starts unloading before the Cubs games. I know it came across poorly, and I do apologize...but I really do worry about the health of Jenks. It's not like Ozzie to not use him in those situations. If he didn't use him cause he knows he struggles in non-save situations, then I say good for Ozzie for finally learning. However, I don't think he's that analytical, and something has to be up. KW is delusional enough that he won't actually unload until July when he has to because the deadline is nearing anyways. He probably still thinks we're in the race. But he's going to be forced to sell off parts in July if we're out of it, and losing 4/5 to Detroit at home would go a long way towards putting us there. -

The Magic shot 62.5 percent from the field (won't happen again), Kobe missed 5 free throws (won't happen again), and the Magic still only won by 4 at home. I'm still not buying that this is an actual series, but I give the Magic credit for pulling out a win tonight. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) Someone made a great point (rowand, I believe). If we lose the next 2 games, don't even think of activating Quentin. If we lose the next 2 games, the f word (firesale) becomes a very real scenario. -
If we lose the next 2 games (and looking at the pitching matchups even with Verlander's issues against us in mind, it's very possibly we will), then this thread becomes a very relevant thing. Two more losses would put us 7 games under .500 and 7 and a half games back. This division is bad, but so is this team, and does ANYBODY really think they can win enough games to make up a 7.5 game deficit?

I laugh at some of the people in this thread pretending to be experts and saying it's inexcuseable to pass on a certain guy. It's the freaking MLB draft and we had the 23rd pick in the first round! None of you have any f***ing idea who is going to be good and who isn't in this draft, even the scouts who have seen these guys hundreds of times aren't entirely sure. We took a guy who is by all accouts a superb athlete with great talent who could turn out to be a star once he focuses on baseball entirely. Give me a break with the ripping of the pick when you have no idea yourself how it will turn out. It's not like we took some guy projected to go in the 30th round.
