QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 02:08 PM) That really means next to nothing. My point wasnt actually all that sweeping. That as things stand, he would play. It'd be him versus Kotsay for an OF spot, and even at that there'd be a DH role open. It actually matters since if you are forced to take Matthews, you have little room left to spend on those two lineup spots. JorDanks or Pods maybe if you can afford him
-
You could bring back Pods for DH and have some much improved defensive outfield with CQ/Rios/Kotsay. Would need right handed bench hitting though.
-
Simon Cowell is probably gonna be extra douchey next year
-
Probably the scariest thing about GMJ inclusion here...as things stand he would actually... play for the Sox. 2009 - runners on: .326/.433 in 141 ABs.....scoring position w/ 2 out: .395/.519 in 43 at-bats. 4 of 7 w/ bases loaded. Granted being in that lineup gets you some pitches to hit all year. He was atrocious w/ bases empty.

I apologize for the use of said term. Just point being we traded Allen for someone who is about to be 28 and has career ERA of 4.00, mostly in the national league.Semantics i guess For the record though I dont think Allen is super either.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) Shouldn't we wait to see if Allen turns out to be the next Chris Young first? I'm totally in agreement that said people shouldnt overreact. But point being I think that Allen deal was the one prospect we'll deal for a low ceiling guy. Hudson and Flowers wont go anywhere unless it's a knockout punch. I could be wrong.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 01:41 PM) I cringe everytime we talk about Sox prospects being dealt. B.Allen being dealt hurt many people, but I honestly think the current prospects, being positions always in need (hudson, flowers) will be dealt only for a real prize

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) The source is legit. Phew

Beckham had too long of a dry spell to really have any indignation happen over this. This is nothing to take away from his great year, but i cant say there shouldve been any belief he was a definite favorite for this.

If we're giving an absolute load of prospects, I wonder if SD would part with an older reliever...after all they are looking at this as a total rebuild if it happens.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) 2 years and $23M left on that deal. If you pick up Adrian and Matthews and only shed Konerko from the 25 man roster and get no cash in return you're effectively paying Gonzalez $16.625M per year for the next 2 years since Matthews is just about useless (he's at or below a replacement level player and such players are by definition everywhere). So even though Adrian is an incredible value you're not saving any money in the long run, you're just adding to the payroll ($3.75 in '10 and $17.5M in '11) which actually makes him a less attractive target via trade. It is still probably better than anything else we were going to do with the 2011 money. Even if it forces us to get a cheap DH, it's not that much of a downside. We get 3 solid young hitters in the lineup. It is not impossbile to think we'd trade GMJ next year for more appealing(but more long term) mediocre talent.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) But if it allows you to get Adrian Gonzalez for a couple years at $5M you have to do it. How long is GMJ contract anyways? On the plus side, once Alex Rios and GMJ enter the same room, their bodies fuse &become one What just annoyed me about this: you just know Angels are doing something like asking for Matt Thornton etc
-
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 01:01 PM) Gary Matthews is a 10 million dollar Brian Anderson. Ouch. Welp, 13M total for Adrian Gonzalez and GMJ is about right. In the expanded deal Angels should keep their cash part of it and just take Scott Linebrink for a generic reliever....
-
And we could reunite Gary Matthews with his brother who I believe works for the Sox organization (and who i went to summer camp with..)

QUOTE (BFirebird @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 12:46 PM) The one thing I am struggling with is...isn't this PK's last year of his deal? Why would they trade prospects for a guy that could become a FA next year? Granted this is all my hopeful thinking here.....but if we're giving the Angels money, they are getting a lot of offense for their buck in Abreu and PK. They are looking to win now. Bringing in a Mexican-American star like this...only good things for attendance. I'm hispanic and it seems like every latino baseball fan I meet seems to root for the Cubs...
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 12:46 PM) Remember that he'll be getting about 20M a year once he enters FA, so you can't go hand out a ton of long-term contracts and than expect to keep Gonzalez around. It seems like a perfect time to get some aging but effective guys in here for a good two to three years of contention.

QUOTE (The Baconator @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Damn, working from home today on a tight deadline for tonight, and this is what I get? I wish I didn't have the willpower of a 3 year old, I'll probably be refreshing every minute now (even though I know nothing will be magically resolved today). Kenny does work fast though...

QUOTE (striker62704 @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 12:40 PM) What if Beckham was going to the Padres? Would you still pull the trigger? You have to pause there due to how cheap Beckham is for years and years, and his offensive value at that position. You dont want to become the Padres. cant bring in a great hitter and give back your top hitter but i'll do almost anything else
-
I guess I kind of differ from some people here, but I see our awesome 5-man rotation as being of less use if it's going to stand with the current lineup alongside it. I would move one of Danks/Floyd to get this deal done. Obviously only if I had to, but I would not let it be a stopping point. Reason being--the freaky part about this deal is how it would actually save us money in year 1. We could get back into the FA hunt. Well actually there are several freaky things about this deal.
-
Konerko would be a production upgrade over Vlad at this point, easy
-
i'll never forget PK saying at the parade rally "it's getting too cold -time for me to go back west" wasnt even cold yet...
-
28 homers on the road last year. Jesus an article from May http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writ...alez/index.html
-
I wonder if there's some way they can do this and send the farm minus Hudson. oooh Also where are all the "you dont trade the face of the organization" posts (ie PK or Buehrle) ? For the right deal you do it
-
i am unemployed, it's about time some exciting stuff popped on this forum dammit
-
You dont want to mess up that elite rotation we are setting ourselves up with. But it really does become moot if we dont do something to improve the lineup. It is not heresy to deal from a strength and put Hudson into the rotation. Sending Floyd and Flowers as principals in a deal would get something in return that could rank us at the top of our division. And then you free up Floyd's dollars down the road....not to say his deal isnt reasonable (it is)...but this way you get to observe Danks and CQ a little longer before deciding who to give that saved cash to.
