  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 21, 2009 -> 12:19 PM) Linebrink has a chance of bringing something to the Sox next year. Any positive that Bradley could bring would be lost by him doing something stupid. Linebrink would bring back talent..yes..but b/c of his own deal here....the return would be talent on its own bad contract. I dont think we could trade him for anything but a guy who is overpaid. In Bradley's case, the contract is short, and the overpay is due to issues separate from his talent. Maybe I'm nuts, but I'll take the chance a guy's issues subside versus the chance an untalented guy has a good year. The issues subsided in Texas...in the unfriendly confines, not so much. There's been a lot of talk of racist taunts there in the bleachers over the years...at US Cellular, there hasnt been. Again, I'd gladly take someone like Abreu over Bradley, but I'd make this move considering how hard it is adding a .375 OBP to a team for 5M in payroll.
  2. QUOTE (scenario @ Sep 21, 2009 -> 12:05 PM) Bradley gets bent out of shape when he gets booed. Can you imagine how long his fragile psyche would last on the South Side? I'd give him a week. LOL. He's taken it to Cubs fans probably more than any player in memory, I bet he'd get some immediate brownie points off that from our fanbase. Whether that matters or not.
  3. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 21, 2009 -> 12:01 PM) We do this. No questions asked. He's a DH in the NL. He's having a s***ty year for a s***ty team, and he's in the wrong environment. Ozzie is the kind of manager he needs. Even though he's in the NL, the year he's having actually isnt that bad.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) Everett still had incidents. There was an early 2005 magazine interview IIRC that he did his usual rant in. He bashed the team some when he left as well. Meanwhile Erstad provided incident-free low OBP in 2007 Now Everett didnt singlehandedly win us any title in 2005, but he was part of a good mix. Bradley would be tons better talent-wise. We need someone to work the count against all the pitchers that wil be making their MLB debut against us. Obviously we would rather have a .375 OBP DH coming from a better behaved guy, but I think we have to factor in all kinds of things.... where payroll's at, what the FA market is like....the wonderful thought of dumping Linebrink. You have to take risks to win, unless you're NYY or BOS. I dont know how to explain it but Guillen respects guys like Bradley more than, say, Swisher or OCab. Bradley under Washington was great, right? It could work. We could try something else that would fail in a totally different way. I like the thought of Bradley and Kotsay being here next year...Pods can DH some that way.
  5. And in a weird way, he has the kind of personality that would go over better w/ southside fans than northside ones. Heavy layers of polish are not necessary here.
  6. I started a thread just like this awhile ago. We need people who can work the count. He's been great as a DH in the past. Is he a fit for our park at a power position? not really. But if any place would get the reporters off his back, it would be the one w/ soundbyte machine Ozzie Guillen. Lets remember how incident free Carl Everett was here.
  7. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 19, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) Seriously, i know A LOT of minor league pitchers, but i have never heard of Dusty Hughes. I think i'll go look him up.
  8. Crazy that my cousin picked one date out of the blue for us a few months back. It was this game. Whooo!
  9. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) with all the crappy losses this season to choose from, for some reason I'm still fuming about yesterday's. I would demote Jenks immediately and tell Rios don't even bother to suit up. Throw a video tribute up there for JD and say so long, thanks for the memories. f*** it. I want Rios to get this out of his system, have as many at-bats at possible where you are horrendous and then regroup for next year. Sitting him, to me, improves nothing--playing him, hey maybe there's a chance he figures something out in advance of next year. It probably wont matter that much but it's at least something. Jenks, on the other hand, i might want to sit so i can preserve his stats. Right now he has some semblance of trade value. His stats are still deceptive to an extent. He has a WHIP comparable to or better than all these: Papelbon, FRod, Fuentes, Rodney, Cordero, Brian Wilson. K rate is about on par with being a generic closer, Save rate is a notch or two below generic. If we can get a decent prospect for Contreras then a good one might still be possible for Jenks.
  10. I've wanted Thornton as closer for awhile now. My preseason scenario where I wanted Jenks traded was scoffed at...but we saw this coming and now his value is a step down. All that said, back then we had more LHP to rely on. So I think Thornton, at least as things stand, needs to remain a setup guy. More and more, I think Kenny might overhaul the pen. Decline Dotel, trade Jenks. Then there'd be cash to spend on the bullpen....b/c without those two really it's just Liney that's making big money.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 09:47 PM) This is a much better team right now than its record says. And it will be even better soon. I can buy the defense improving. Alexei, Gordon and obviously OF looks better now. But we need an OBP jolt big time. If CQ has another so-so year the team goes nowhere. It was a rebound year from PK, a career year from AJP, Pods .....Thome was about his usual...all that and the offense still didnt get it done. The lineup needs upgrading
  12. This is horrible. Bobby Jenks is awful and i want tthis season to just be done alreadyyyyy We all saw the writing on the wall but few here supported a Jenks trade before this year. Those who brought it up were mercilessly mocked
  13. I dont remember seeing two halves in such stark contrast as Jermaine's
  14. another Kotsay RBI but in truth that one we give to Gordon who didnt stop hustling on what looked like a routine ground out
  15. Rios always seems to take one right down the middle on 0-1
  16. Gotta love the Royals giving their all lately. Now if only we could have beaten a few more teams earlier in the year so we couldve withstood this tough stretch. Under that scenario, we actually wouldntve been so crushed after that trip.
  17. I almost dont want the Twins to be hurt right now. To advance, we need the Twins to beat the Tigers up. I know we have to face Twins too, but it wil be at home and our lefties ideally would be lined up somewhat to face Minn anyway.
  18. It's been 90 bad at-bats. Too early to tell. If we never forgave Paulie's super-long slumps, we may not have a ring right now. And a bad 90 at-bats is something I can swallow if its a huge defensive upgrade, at a key defensive position, which it is. In '08 Rios had 47 doubles, 8 triples and 15 homers. If we get that from him in '10, it's like adding a lower-OBP-Markakis. I'm not judging KW yet.
  19. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Sep 16, 2009 -> 12:35 AM) I couldn't care less if we aren't a popular team,if I wanted to root for a team based soley on popularity,I woulda been a Yanks fan long ago... I couldn't give a flying f*** if the Cubs are more popular,I would've shot myself long ago after all these years of futility, they haven't even won a game the last 2 playoffs series even though they were heavily favored In theory, I agree. But in reality, more Sox fans means more $ going towards our payroll. These things go in cycles. If the Cubs are ready for a new several-years lull in onfield play, it could open the doors for the Sox to take a chunk of that market from them. We have their former (well-liked) announcer, a young team, respected starting pitchers, an entertaining mgr, Obama..... It may not seem like it to us, but these last years of piling up wins will have an effect on what we can do in the future. Kids are growing up right now only knowing the Sox as the Chicago team that wins/has won. Soon they'll spend money and bring their own kids to games, etc.
