Game Thread: Sox v. Tigers 3:10pm Sept. 3, 2011
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 08:02 PM) I see what you did there. Exact opposite of what a manager ought to be saying before a big series on the road.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 08:00 PM) Santos just didn't have his good slider. It happens...congrats to the Tigers. By far the best team in the AL Central. Oh, can we stop pitching to Cabrera at the end of games? Is that like 5 game winning homers off of us since he came to Detroit? Did he attempt the changeup at all?

ESPN Sunday Night Game
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 07:39 PM) Hope we pull this one out tonight so the game tomorrow night can be real special and we can move to within 4 1/2. See you behind the big screen I blame this thread for that HR.

Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 06:52 PM) That team is going to be flippin' good for a while. I'm known as the ultimate prospect overrater. But Skaggs and Bauer are the truth. And they've already got Kennedy and Hudson primed to start games 1 and 2 against Philly. 3 years ago the same thing would have been written about drew, young, and Reynolds as their core.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 07:24 PM) I'm really sick of the East Coast bias in professional sports. I know there is a rain delay, but I really don't care to see Boston beating up Texas. Be glad you got to see any of it. I just went out and bought new glasses since that's the only game I get.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 07:22 PM) I'd trust him on the mound over Peavy and Humber at this point. But it does make sense for the long term. Id say that a decent outing from any of them is a crapshoot. Don't know why you'd trust him over Peavy.

Don't worry, the Libyans returned the favor.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 03:49 PM) No, but then you certainly can't blame the GM for not forseeing that Dunn would be hitting in the .160s either To be fair though...as much as I agree with what you say, Dunn's numbers were down in the 2nd half last year, and that's a risk that the GM has to assess.

Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 03:19 PM) I bet it's far more true than you think. Bill Wirtz still made money off a crappy hockey team. Look at how many sports teams have changed cities. There's a difference between wanting to turn a profit and wanting to maximize profit. The White Sox plan coming into this season was not to maximize profit, they could have done that without the $25 million total salary increase.

Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 03:11 PM) I don't know if that would be 100% true. We may find out how loyal JR is too certain people. As for the investors $$$ is more important than winning. In a lot of sports, that's not true, or at least not all the time. Profit maximization is not the order of most teams.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 02:41 PM) Lots of stuff has gone right too. Konerko, Buehrle, bullpen. Our bullpen has, IMO, underperformed as well. Thornton started off terribly, Ohman started off terribly, Sale should have started in the minors, many innings were wasted on guys like Bruney. Given where their ERA is, they have a fairly large number of blown saves.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 02:37 PM) There is going to be changes. Of the 3 main fan targets, KW, Ozzie and Walker, at most, IMO only 1 returns. Probably none at this point. I think KW has the best shot, but the JR loyalty thing is a two way street. He's loyal to his investors and they have to be not too impressed with the way KW has spent their money. Like I've been saying...it all depends on exactly how much control over the decision making KW has really had. If he came in and told JR that "I could spend $125 million and we'll have a 50-50 shot of winning the Central" and JR said "Go for it, it might save Ozzie if you do so"...then KW will have given the right advice.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 02:30 PM) With an MVP season from Konerko, AJ hitting like he is, Buehrle and Humber . . . Lot's of stuff for this group to be a 90-win team. Too many folks wore rose colored glasses before the season started. AJ really hasn't been that incredible of a hitter. His average is up but his power numbers are down, and he's now been hurt. Castro's been hurt too. This team could have been a 90 win team with a large margin of error. Almost everything has gone wrong from there.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) I'm not a PECOTA fan, but It was laughable that people thought this was a 90-win team before the season started. I had them at .500 too and was right. You realize how few things it would take for this to be a 90 win team? A solid full season from John Danks A normal 30 HR season from Adam Dunn A decent season with the Bats from Beckham A decent season with the bats from Rios A decent season by Jake Peavy Juan Pierre being able to field and occasionally steal a base If just 2 of those things had happened, this team would be in first place right now and on pace for 90.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 02:14 PM) Guillen batted Dunn 4th and Rios 5th into August. A lot of this is on KW, without question. A lot of it is on Ozzie as well. They have behaved like 2 little kids trying to become JR's favorite. Its time for adults to make the White Sox decisions. That means getting rid of both. Guillen batted Rios 4th until the end of August.

At least Rios isn't batting cleanup. That said...He should not be in the lineup at all.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 01:16 PM) This team is not underachieving, PECOTA projected them to be .500. They were never good enough to win the division. Pecota also hates Mark Buehrle because he doesn't strike enough people out and projected a big falloff from Konerko.

At least I don't have to be too mad at Fox for not carrying the game after last night.

Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) It was almost a month later that Pierre started hitting. a months worth of suck that possibly could have been replaced by Dayan. He could have sucked too, but we'll never know. And we'd be pretty much in first place if it weren't for that 11-22 start, right?

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 01:10 PM) I have to agree. Milledge isn't an improvement Depends on what we're using him for. Compared to Juan Pierre's bat, he might well be an improvement, and you can't defend Juan by saying "But Milledge has been terrible on defense!" because so has Juan. If you're trying to put him in CF, yeah, that's a defensive mess...but the guy who has played CF for most of the season has been worse in almost every way. Milledge/Lillibridge or De Aza/Viciedo >> Pierre/Rios/Viciedo.

QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 12:47 PM) I'm gonna say this, I have a lot of respect for Jerry Reinsdorf. I am certainly not agreeing with everything that he has done but overall he has been a good owner for the Bulls and Sox. However, if he retains either KW or Ozzie after this season then I will have lost faith in him as a capable owner of this baseball franchise. The sad thing is...if he retains KW, he's indirectly indicting himself...because to me, that means that JR himself is taking responsibility for a decent number of the decisions that have dragged into this mess.
