The Republican Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 04:52 PM) You have no idea what you're talking about. Oh, you want to count the wars that Bush started. It's his fault. Here is defense spending (although on a per capita basis) from Wikipedia. Notice the lack of a downward motion prior to the present day line. The administration defense budget request this year was for $556 billion, not counting the wars. Last year's budget proposed $549 billion, but the Congress never passed a budget and just ran on continuing resolutions so I don't have a "Hard spending number" for this year. It's somewhere around $526 billion.

The environment thread
The American Lung Association has had a lawsuit against the government over those regulations on hold for about 3 years. They originally filed suit when the Bush Administration wouldn't add in a rule based on the 2008 review, but they backed the suit off based on the promise that the Obama admin would follow the new recommendations. Keep in mind, the Bush 2008 regulations were for 75 ppb ozone. The country prior to that was operating on the 1997 standard, 80 ppb. The EPA review says 60-70 should be the maximum range. If the ALA had just accepted the Bush 2008 Proposed standard, then we'd be at 75. The Obama administration has decided to stick with 80. Sue their lungs off. The ALA lawsuit immediately went back on today.

Roger Clemens indicted for perjury, obstruction
Judge rules Clemens retrial is not barred. Clemens's side is able to appeal this ruling upwards. A new trial might take well over a year to start.

The environment thread
So let's see...science was originally proposed in 2008, Bush Administration said no and kicked can down the road, EPA redoes plan under this administration, comes up with a 20 year horizon for implementation (read that again), scheduled to renew the standard in 2013, can gets kicked down the road again to past 2013. How will businesses ever hire with this kind of regulatory uncertainty!?!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 09:58 AM) Wow Buster_ESPN Buster Olney There have been 345 PAs against Craig Kimbrel in his career--and only twice have hitters pulled the ball against him for EBH, both doubles. "Watch out for Eckersly's 3-2 backdoor slider if you're a lefty"...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 09:46 AM) Which means he is going to be one of your back ups. And lets face it, he is faster, runs the bases better, and is a much better defender that Milledge. Frankly...I'm not quite sure. Rios has been bad in CF this year. He may still be average as an RF. And I dont' know why I should think that he runs the bases better...I can't recall having been obviously impressed by his baserunning skills.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 09:43 AM) I realize there will always be a bunch of these startups that fall out, but... this will happen more often now because this country elected to go to war in Iraq instead of getting out in FRONT of these technologies. Now, China and other countries are already producing technology that is better and cheaper.. Since you pointed it out, I'll add the data backing it up.

It's a terrible number and obviously will be revised to a small net loss once the bigger government job cuts get processed... But it's actually kinda cool to see it come in at exactly "0".

QUOTE (Bruce_Blixton @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 10:46 PM) I wouldn't mind seeing Axelrod added to that list. He's already thrown 150 innings this year after being at only 105 and 110 the last 2 years.
-
9/1 games
The thing that they may feel comfortable doing with Axelrod is calling him starter #6 to open the season...which would mean that they have a fair amount of pitching depth even if they keep the risky 3 (Humber, Peavy, Stewart) in the big league rotation.

Dunn and Rios
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 09:23 AM) A twisted ankle he got while running the bases. That isn't really an injury "worry" in my eyes. This is one where fathom is kinda right. He always had an iffy motion, where you wouldn't be surprised if something popped eventually. There's a reason the Padres took out insurance on him.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 08:50 AM) Well said. Being a terrible defender and nothing special on the bases is what kept him out of Chicago. We have plenty of DH type OFers on this team. We don't really need another. I'd rather have him doing that than Rios.

QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 01:12 AM) I listen to his podcast religiously, and only borderline Cy Young contenders are aces to him. Not that much of a slight, really. So in other words, there's maybe 1 pitcher a year who comes up through the minors that he'd say profiles as a #1.

Dunn and Rios
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 08:59 AM) That's how I see it. These guys had track records. You could argue that they were taking a chance on Rios returning to his career norms, but with Peavy and Dunn, there had been no real down time in their performances before they got here. It wasn't like Kenny was buying low on them. They got here and they flopped to this point. Heck you can throw Nick Swisher into this category as well. The one thing about Peavy though..there was clearly some injury worries going on which the Sox didn't push hard enough on..

I'd assume this will go something like the last one...Briggs and Co will go out seeking a trade if given permission and discover that they've massively overestimated his value and no one will offer him the kind of new deal he wants.
