Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 09:26 PM) Standardized testing is stupid, as it Washington regulating what should be taught. A school shouldn't be any different than anywhere else where the people who run the place should decide who stays and goes. There's a reason why the teachers unions have fought for things like tenure and job protection though...because that setting in particular lends itself to unjust firings...in particular if a teacher is doing their job...and gives a bad grade to the quarterback just because the quarterback earned a bad grade.

Daniel Hudson watch thread
QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 23, 2010 -> 02:53 AM) I think the players have similar value for the next couple years. My problem with the trade is finances and finances only, but people are going about this all wrong by looking at Hudson's few starts with Arizona so far. With Hudson, the judgment has to be made over a year or so. Hitters will adjust to him, his stuff isn't good enough to dominate the NL like this. In the short term, Jackson has been as good so there really can't be a complaint in terms of the quality of player we received for Hudson. Not yet at least. His stuff isn't good enough to totally dominate the NL, but an ERA in the low 3's in the NL is, IMO, entirely reasonable for him.

Brad Hawpe put on waivers...
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 11:16 PM) Hawpe is a random nearly washed up person. The dude is being released while owed a decent amount of cash. Spring training is the time for "tryouts" not during a pennant race. There's 1 other good time for tryouts...late in the season after falling out of the pennant race. And we're almost there.

The White Sox are just exhausted
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 23, 2010 -> 08:32 AM) I wonder if LaRoche or Damon is KWs backup plan if the Manny thing doesn't pan out? If the Sox fall 7 games out, I don't think the Sox will be adding anything. The Sox could have had either of them already, and unless Manram gives you a 1.200 OPS the rest of the way, having the other guy in the lineup for the extra 2 weeks would have made even more of a difference. We're not adding a bat. Mark Kotsay is our DH. End of discussion.

Brad Hawpe put on waivers...
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 07:48 PM) You probably can sign him to a minor league deal in the offseason. You don't want to wind up where the Rays/White Sox are this year on the DH spot though where they're pulling out random, nearly washed up people from minor league deals to fill their DH slot. It'd be nice to have a tryout first.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 08:11 PM) There are a lot of overpaid teachers in this country who are content getting their paycheck and not caring about the kids in their classes. In most fields they wouldn't have the incentive to stick around with the large pension at the end of the tunnel. They also wouldn't have the union protection of being able to suck without being challenged for their suckiness. The problem is...there's not exactly a line of qualified people to replace them, even in a near-depression. You'll get me on arguing that there needs to be additional levels of accountability...but you'll get challenged by me on how to determine that based on standardized tests.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 06:42 PM) Well, it would seem that the only rich people are government employees, so now we know why you prefer it. Only because all your friends in the banks got bailed out by that government, so yeah, I guess we can call them government employees.

Castro's good
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 05:42 PM) So you would rather have Sale pitch 175 innings in AAA than in Chicago? So that you can get 200 IP from him in 2012? It seems to me like the potential difference in 175 innings he could give us versus say, Freddy, would be much larger than 25 additional innings we get out of him by holding him back a year, especially when you consider he may get pulled into service early anyway because of injury to someone else. Where did I talk about Freddy? When I look at our staff for next year, Sale is already in the #6 slot. Peavy, Floyd, D1, Buehrle, Jackson. Yeah, someone could be dealt, but I'm not comfortable dealing a guy away to clear space for a guy who's never had a major league start. If we didn't have 5 starters next year, then balancing finding a #5 starter versus starting Sale would be a more difficult question. Then I'd still like to bring in some depth, but I'd be trying to find a guy I could steal for $1-$2 million like this year...expecting that Sale could come up in June and start off. The thing to remember...if he pitches 175 innings next year at Charlotte, none of those innings count against his arbitration time, and if that makes him a better starting pitcher for the Sox in the long-term, it's a good move...and it provides nice insurance despite having a really deep rotation anyway.

Can anyone recall a more gut-wrenching few weeks?
2006 and 2008 had some serious gut wrenching, it's over weeks.

Brad Hawpe put on waivers...
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 06:06 PM) Why bother with Brad Hawpe, this team is cooked. Frankly...if we could get a few positive at bats out of him and turn him into something useful for next season, that wouldn't be bad.

8/22 Danks vs. Frustrated Royal
QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) No, it's completely arbitrary and thus bulls***. You can't roll out a statistical survey and have your big headline be something arbitrary. It's something Chad at State U. will eat up because he doesn't know any better. Just because something is arbitrary doesn't mean that it's not useful. I was actually somewhat impressed, if you tell me that 1 out of 5 close calls are impossible to tell on video, 1/5 are wrong, and 3/5 are right...that's not terribly bad, that means that they're doing pretty well.

8/22 Danks vs. Frustrated Royal
QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 06:18 PM) Nope, sorry. Unfortunately ESPN can't do statistical analysis if the company depended on it. Here's the low down from a person who actually understands statistics instead of a bunch of brodogs at Bristol who just REALLY LOVE SPORTS: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2010/08/esp...blows-call.html To be fair though...the idea of an arbitrary "close call" is something that a statistics guy should criticize, but that doesn't mean it's not something that could be judged by a guy who knows the game some.

8/22 Danks vs. Frustrated Royal
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) I am not surprised either, but that doesn't meant it's an acceptable number. If umpires can't get the calls right at least 80-85% of the time on close calls, then we need to have some replay review system. You're actually missing the reality...it was 65% of the time they were completely correct, 20% they were obviously wrong, and the other 15% or so was so close that it was indeterminate even on the replay. (That said, I still want a challenge).

8/22 Danks vs. Frustrated Royal
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 05:14 PM) It was just way too "hittable" of a fastball, which of course, is Linebrink's main issue. Funny thing is for all the b****ing about West, I swear that Blanco was out at 2nd. His right leg never touched second until Alexei tagged his left foot. It sure looked to me like Blanco was safe. I'd believe that Getz was out on that Alexei tag attempt before I'd believe that Blanco was out, and I thought Alexei missed Getz's helmet.

TV Announcer Duos
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 05:13 PM) The only thing worse than Joe West was hearing the non-stop complaining by Hawk and Frank about him today. The thing they did that I really liked was the double-screen call comparisons. Instead of just ranting, they actually backed it up.

8/22 Danks vs. Frustrated Royal
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 05:12 PM) Nice meatball there by Linebrink. Hawk, if there's such an issue with umpire, then why were no coaches ejected? 1. What else could he throw that would have been called? 2. Ozzie might have gotten like 5 games if Joe West had ejected him again.

Castro's good
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 05:00 PM) Give Putz a break. He's a year removed from elbow surgery. Why would you start Sale in the minors instead of just letting him turn it loose in Chicago? Limit his innings a bit and skip some starts when you can. Elbow surgery for bone spurs though...that's not the Tommy John, that's the kind of thing you can recover from over a period of months, not years. He shouldn't be feeling the effects of that right now. Limiting Sale's innings isn't a good selling point to me. If Sale is going to be a very good big league pitcher...then the thing we want to do is maximize the number of innings we get from him as a starter in the bigs. This year really doesn't count much because he came up well after the time that he'd lose an arbitration year.

8/22 Danks vs. Frustrated Royal
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 22, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) Jackson was warming? Maybe it is just to get him stretched out. You know 5 or 7 pitches on Friday wore him out If he's going on Thursday I'm sure he does need to get some work in. I don't know about why you warm him up then...but I guess it does make some sense to use linebrink first before going to Jackson if that's your last option.
