  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 02:24 PM) I just wanted to point out one thing I do like about the health care reform bill in its current form. They are putting a stop to the habit of insurance companies to deny or delays coverage for pre-existing conditions. That I like. They're saying they're going to do that, but the devil is going to be in the details.
  2. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Pelosi's way worse. At least Hastert had 1/2 a brain and used 1/2 of the 1/2. And that half was devoted for a time to protecting Mark Foley's right to "Talk to" the White House pages.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) What is his arbitration/free agency status? He is a free agent at the end of this season. His current salary is $2.825 million, so it's plausible the Cardinals could offer him arbitration.
  4. Does his supplier come with?
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 10:43 AM) There you go! That's the one thing I like about most of these saberstats. The standard stats can tell a bold face lie sometimes. If you look at Linebrink's normal ERA by itself you would think he was having a dominating year. We all know that hasn't been the case. So would Bartolo Colon have the biggest spread between his ERA and his FIP in the big leagues?
  6. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 10:35 AM) DER is defensive efficiency ratio. It's kinda like BABIP except it's for defense. Tells you the percentage of batted balls in play that are turned into outs. FIP is fielding independent pitching (this is a saber stat that I'm a big fan of). It's a metric that measures everything a pitcher has 100% control of (walks, K's, HR's HBP). If a guy's normal ERA is a lot lower that his FIP ERA than that suggests he's getting lucky with balls in play. And vice versa if his normal ERA is higher than his FIP ERA. So, if I'm reading those #'s right, Linebrink has had some shoddy defense behind him this year compared to last since the DER behind him has gone down...but he's also been quite lucky with the other balls hit in play, since his FIP ERA is much higher than his normal ERA? Does that just say that his ERA is being held down because a lot of runs have been unearned?
  7. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) Does Jordan Danks have the experience? Well I guess with modern times, players only spend 2-3 years in the minors, so we drafted him in what 2007? The more I think about it scratching my beard, the more I think he will be ready and be our CF. Rumor has it the guy is fast and him or Shelby can be our lead-off hitter in the future as well We drafted him in 2008 but that was after 3 full years of college ball. He's certainly got leadoff potential and is moving up the system quite well, although his stats still leave a few reasons to worry (Strikeouts). If we go on a 2 week losing skid and fall out of the race I wouldn't be surprised to see him before the end of the season; otherwise he may have a shot to make the big league team in ST next year. HIs ETA is probably 2010, with potentially a year or so of struggling to adapt to big league pitching if he can't make better contact.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 10:12 AM) Is JD not playing tonight? I believe they already said yes, he's off today.
  9. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 07:56 AM) Would Dye and Dotel for Dickerson be a good move? Dickerson is a 27 year old, soon to be 28 year old, who made his MLB debut last year at the age of 26. The highest OPS he put up in the minors was .863, but that was as a 26 year old in 2/3 of a season in AAA. Before that he put up a .778 career minor league OPS. He has decent stolen base numbers, but isn't an ideal top of the order guy; he strikes out a ton and doesn't hit for a high average. He put up a crazy line in his first 102 MLB at bats last year, 6 HR, 1.021 OPS. THis year he's back down to the .721 OPS he typically puts up. Unless your scouts have serious reasons to think this guy is a late, late bloomer, Dye and Dotel for Chris Dickerson is a salary dump in exchange for a guy who on most teams would be a platoon/backup OF.
  10. A legit question. Thanks to Cubano, we're hearing an awful lot more about each Cuban ballplayer who winds up potentially defecting. I wouldn't have known about most of these guys before other than the ones someone signed. There's got to be what, 3, 4 of them out there now? Is there a sudden rash of people defecting from the Cuban teams, or have this many players typically defected over the last, say, decade or so, and we just haven't heard from them because they haven't made the big leagues?
  11. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 09:52 AM) One of Linebrink's main issues is that his BB/G has risen from 1.9 last season to 3.5 currently, which is just a little above his career average. Last season also he had a DER of .741 and that's dropped to .681 currently, so he's obviously had some subpar defense behind him when he's pitched so far this season. However he has a FIP of 4.28, and that's a 2.03 difference b/w that and his ERA. So that indicates what kind of pitcher he's been so far moreso I think. And he had a 4.27 FIP last season. And really, you expect a bit more than that for a reliever you're paying almost $5M a season to. DER and FIP? Care to give some details on those?

  13. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 07:25 PM) oh good lord What, you didn't expect that reaction from PETA the moment you saw that video? I did.
  14. Stallworth receives "Indefinite" suspension from the NFL. (The Indefinite suspension Pacman Jones received lasted 6 games).
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 06:43 PM) According to Chicagosports.com, Dye likely to sit tomorrow and Castro to start at catcher. So AJ to RF then?
  16. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 05:46 PM) Bomb for Flowers. That's #10. That's just short of 30 HR pace in a Major League season and he's only 23. I'm not gonna start calling for a promotion considering the strikeouts and the AJ situation, but with the way the guys have been going up it wouldn't surprise me. If there's a spot on the 40 man and he's still producing like this I'd lay solid money you'll see him in a Sox jersey this September.
  17. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 11:32 AM) Like they are going to investigate anything. What a joke. Now if this were a Republican on the other hand... The witnesses would be subpoenaed, the witness would refuse to appear, the Congress would repeatedly send sternly worded letters to said witnesses, and that's as far as it would go.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:35 PM) If you do bring him back, just don't give him a contract extension during the year. One leg injury, and we know what happens with him. I'd really rather not though bring him back with the idea of making him our leadoff hitter. I mean as a trade-bait piece right now.
  19. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) Like who? Here is the list of Free Agent RF this offseason Kearns has a club option. Ordonez has a club/vesting option. Dye has a mutual option that won't be picked up. Some other names could be available who currently aren't playing RF but could be moved there, including: Holliday, Bay, Russell Branyan, etc.
  20. Unless KW can do something like he was trying to do with the Peavy deal...find a major piece that can help us for 3+ years, I don't see us buying anything. Not with the minor league depth we suddenly have. I'd be interested in being a seller...but I don't want our team to be the California Housing Market - I'd rather take my chances on a hot streak at the end of the season than sell for little return. Wonder if anyone would be interested in Podsednik if he keeps hitting like this.
  21. Soriano is hitting .140 against LHP this year. Theriot is hitting over .300 against LHP.
  22. Do not take Thornton out here, for god's sake.
