What the hell happened to our pitching/defense?
Balta1701 replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:29 PM) I never liked the Garland trade from the begining. But our rotation would've been with Buehrle, Vazquez, Contreras, Garland, Danks, meaning Floyd would've been left out. Right now I'd still rather have Floyd starting than Garland. Actually...I'd say it's more likely Danks would have been left out if Floyd wasn't traded, because Danks has options left, Floyd does not. They weren't releasing him. -
QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) My point is that it's not Thome's age, but his propensity for hamstring, calf, and ribcage injuries that's keeping him from playing 1B. Age hasn't stopped older players like Griffey and Bonds from playing the more physically-taxing corner OF positions. It's just best as a rule never to use Mr. tetrahydrogestrinone as an example for anything, because you always run in to the trouble of there being other reasons for why he was able to perform like he did. Certain injections have been known to help people recover much more rapidly from the type of nagging injuries that might sideline a normal, even younger person.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:26 PM) Wow... it's obvious that reading is difficult these days... where in the post of NSS's you quoted does it say "posts on a baseball message board?" It says "fringe, overzealous supporters". They don't get on camera all that often, but I think it's safe to say that GWBush has an enormous number of "Fringe, overzealous supporters", especially within the Christian movements. Just thinking of all the people saying things like "We're so happy that God is back in the White House" (not necessarily calling him Quentin but calling him an agent of Quentin) back in the years he was campaigning. Is it fair to not vote for Mr. Bush based on them, without any regards to how Mr. Bush personally acts or behaves? Conversely, I'm sure Senator McCain has more than a few people who won't vote for a terrorist loving Madrassa visiting Muslim Muslim Muslim terrorist black man. Should we base whether or not we're voting for the Senator based on those folks? (Give you an example. Think back to the West Virginia primary and how Hillary picked up all the supporters from the areas in Appalachia who wouldn't vote for a black man).

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 12:21 PM) I hope Griffey gets the same reception Manny got this weekend at Dodger stadium - i've never seen LA fans so pumped. He even got a standing O (i s*** you not) after he struck out yesterday and was walking back to the dugout. Well, he'd absolutely battered the D-Backs in that series already. I'd probably have given him a standing O for those 3 games too.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 01:41 PM) Amazing how much his stock has fallen over the past season and a half. I wouldn't mind having a look at him if he was available though. Mr. Floyd, here's this new pitcher we acquired, Mr. Bailey. Why don't you 2 go to dinner or something, and then we've got an appointment with Mr. Cooper a little later in the night.
-
QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 12:42 PM) What were his numbers in Anaheim last season again? Something around a .340 OBP IIRC, which is just light years ahead of Uribe. .345. But he also hit .301, which was his career best. This season overall, he's basically been exactly the player he's always been. .270-.280 hitter, couple walks, not great at anything but a solid option as a #2 hitter. It's easy to be light years ahead of Uribe, but let's not pretend that being light years ahead of Uribe means you're either good or worth $10 million a season.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 08:26 AM) So the main needs in the offseason are a MI filler until Beckham is ready and a long term CF. Resigning Griffey does not accomplish either of these tasks. I could see making a deal with the Angels if Teixera walks trading PK for Sarge Jr. and a spect in a move that helps both teams fill holes with players that might need a fresh start. I think that either Vazquez or Contreras will be traded in the offseason, most likely Conteras but it might be hard to find a taker. No matter what else we can say...I think we can say with some level of certainty that any attempt to predict the lineup KW will put together next season is going to be foolhardy. Every year, he totally surprises us several times. Going in to 05, Pierzynski, Iguchi, Lee for Podsednik were big changes. 06, Rowand for Thome, BMac to the pen for Vazquez. 07, I think a lot of us saw the Erstad mess coming, but blah. Danks/Masset for BMac. Freddy Garcia for Gavin Floyd. Another near complete overhaul in 08. Alexei Ramirez, God added to LF, Nick Swisher appears in CF, Garland for O.C. With KW, it's safe to say there'll be a pretty major, nearly unexpected move. Maybe more than one.
-
QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) Long - term I can't really see a future for Josh on the Sox. With KW looking for hitters with good OBP skills (hence the OC and Swish acquisitons) having Fields and his sub .300 OBP in the lineup is not something I can see happening. Cabrera is only a good OBP person if you're comparing him to Uribe. His career OBP is .321. If he's doing other things with the bat, i.e. being a good #2 hitter, or driving in runs, etc., then you tolerate that. His OBP this year is .324.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 09:35 AM) Why would the Sox call him up if he's injured? I don't think you could blame his injuries this year for all the swinging and missing he's doing. He's not necessarily injured right now, but he's been on and off the DL all year.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 06:56 AM) I think Josh Fields had far greater value before this season started. That usually happens when people get hurt.

Is Arroyo a free agent at the end of this season? At least if I'm the Reds GM, I'm hoping, if Arroyo doesn't leave, that I can develop a rotation of Harang, Arroyo, Cueto, Volquez, and Bailey. Masset would be a "eh" option, because the other 3 young guys I have clearly have better stuff. If Harang or Arroyo are walking this offseason then that would make sense.
-
QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 02:13 PM) I wonder why we don't hear Ed Rendell's name mentioned more as a possible running mate for Obama. He was also a big time Hillary person in the primary campaign.
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 08:35 AM) No they are 32-16 since then if I recall, and that's awfully good. But my point is that our stretch of bad play really started on either July 1st (we're 14-14 since then) or the off day July 7th (10-12 since then), and Minnesota has only gained 3 and 2 games since those days. So it's not like they caught us because they played incredible, it's more that we are playing bad. The key question is...how long can the Twinkies keep up playing .667 ball? In 05, the only real reason Cleveland got back in to the race was that they spent about 2 months playing .750 ball. Both the Sox and Twins are right around .560 for the season right now. If they can keep playing .667 ball the rest of the season, you almost just have to tip your hat to them because you have to be one Hell of a team to keep up that level of performance over 4 straight months.

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 10:22 PM) This has been a crazy story so far and I'm thinking it'll only get crazier. The Packers have now hired former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer to do damage control. He's the guy who was the press secretary when we launched Bush's war. It's crazier.

Policy Initiatives for Rising Gas Costs

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 05:16 AM) As Balta mentioned, notice these checks are always around an election. It's a Chinese and Middle Eastern funded bribe. Fixed that for you. -
Policy Initiatives for Rising Gas Costs
Balta1701 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 06:58 AM) Wouldn't a gas tax holiday help those that drive the most, the most? Why should everyone get a $1000 check? My wife works out of the house, should she get a check? I spent $400 on gas last month, I could save alot. How about the people who live in the city and take a bus or walk to work? They don't really need the gas 'releif', do they? Just asking. Assuming you spent $4 a gallon, that's 100 gallons of gas, which means that ending the federal tax would save you $18 a month, if 2 things happened. First, money would have to be found somewhere else to pay for the transportation work that is paid for by the gas tax, which presumably means more debt, which eventually someone is going to have to pay back. Secondly, that assumes that when the price of gasoline drops $.20 a gallon, that somehow supply and demand break down, and people don't decide that they can buy more gas, pushing demand upwards and forcing the price back upwards. Just compared to another $1000 "thanks for voting for me" check, if you're buying 100 gallons of gas a month, it would take you nearly 5 years to recoup the amount in the Obama happy check. Not that it's a good idea, but that might give you some idea of how much profit the oil companies are raking in, if you could take enough money away from them to give those sorts of rebate checks. To put it another way...last quarter, U.S. oil companies (not counting the biggies like Saudi Aramco) put forwards profits of $40 billion last quarter (not year, quarter). While they clearly don't sell just to the U.S., that's still a profitability of $100 a month for them for every person like you. The government took $20. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) Team spokesman said he's day-to-day. I didn't know you could be day-to-day with cramping? You've never had that bad of one then.

8/2 Sox-Royals on FOX Saturday Game - 2:50 CT

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) or you know, he could have let Anderson bat for Wise (.275 OPS against LHP) in the 8th, and keep Quentin in the game? Q's had less rest since day 3 of the season than anyone on the team. If conditions were rough...every inning he rests is a good thing. We're carrying like 6 OF's right now. May as well rest the MVP Candidates a bit more. -

QUOTE (Winning Ugly @ Aug 2, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) Wow, HR by BA? Great. Now we'll see even less of him. Seriously, his numbers are right now almost exactly where Chris Young's would be with similar #'s of at bats.
