  1. QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 02:02 PM) He is younger, but does he have the same wear and tear on his body? Hunter has played 33% more big league games in his career than Rowand, and did so on that turf in Minnesota. Rowand's taken a blow or two, but so has Hunter, and I'd say that Hunter's body probably has a lot more wear and tear than Rowand's.
  2. QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 01:57 PM) Who is going to pitch for them? Where is this great Twins pitcher producing machine (outside of good relief pitching)? Bonser's not been very good. Nor Baker. Silva will leave in FA. Liriano's hurt. Trading Garza. Their top prospect Swarzak suspended for drugs?? Baseball Prospectus says the White Sox have three pitching prospects better than any Twins pitching prospect. Nathan is also a FA at the end of 2008.
  3. QUOTE(daa84 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 01:50 PM) good move more both clubs....rays could really compete in 2 years or so...kazmir garza shields and price could be a mirror image of what detroit has with their young guns...add to that longoria and brignac waiting in the wings to add to crawford upton and maybe even dukes if he ever gets straightened out....especially if pena sticks around and continues to produce thats gonna be a dangerous team And then throw Pedro Alvarez into that mix as well.
  4. QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 01:48 PM) Because he has nowhere near the resume Hunter has? Granted, the free agent market always tends to allow for huge, undeserved contracts every year, so he may just get about what the Sox were offering Hunter, 5/$75 (but not from the Sox). But he also had a better season than Hunter last year and is younger.
  5. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 12:47 PM) Theoretically, sure... It would have to be more than $50K, and Bud wouldn't approve. Hernandez is pretty much gone. There's nothing we can do now but beat off to Cole Armstrong box scores. Do you seriously believe some team will keep him on their 25 man roster for the whole year?
  6. Unsurprising. Keeps us at 40 spots on the 40 man.
  7. Baseball America has an interesting rule 5 draft preview posted. Couple names worth noting:
  8. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 11:33 AM) 2. A Starter, another Reliever, or 2B In this market, who out there is even close to deserving of that money at any of those positions? Carlos Silva? Octavio Dotel? Mark Loretta? Right now, if you want to spend that money, the only position on the field I see where it makes sense to spend it is in the OF on preferably Jones or possibly Rowand/Fukudome.
  9. QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 11:32 AM) Doesn't Pujols have a 10 yeard deal? Or am I wrong? Link
  10. QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 11:21 AM) 1) I am assuming that Kenny Williams is looking for a leadoff hitter through a trade, and CoCo Crisp is probably the leading option, should they be able to work a deal out. He's only making about $5 million for this season and next, but, assuming they do acquire a leadoff hitter in CF, do the White Sox really consider putting Jerry Owens in LF as a #9 hitter ? It would give Guillen the speedy options in his lineup at #1, #2 and #9, but this is hardly, in my opinion, a championship level lineup. 2) If the White Sox were offering Hunter $15 million a season, should we still expect this money to be eventually spent this off-season ? 3) Can the White Sox afford two trades to beef up their OF ? We've heard rumors about M.Cabrera, C.Crisp and C.Crawford. I am assuming that acquiring Crisp would make two trades hard to make, but could they acquire both Crisp and Crawford without decimating their farm system ? 1. Like I said earlier in this thread, does an OF of Owens, Crisp, Dye excite anyone? 2. Who else is there to spend that money on if we pick up Crisp instead? We'd no longer really need Jones although that'd be nice, but if you pick up Jones why bother getting Crisp. 3. I see it as nearly impossible that the Sox have the talent to go after more than 1 of those guys.
  11. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 09:56 AM) Then I think a backup plan should be signing Jenkins for LF, and going with Owens in CF. Trade Crede and Uribe for the best young prospects they can fetch. If the organization thought there was a non-zero chance of getting something useful out of Anderson and Sweeney within a year, this would be a sensible option as well.
  12. QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 09:49 AM) I don't see why Anderson is such a bad option. I'm sick thinking of KW trading ANYTHING for Willy Taveras or Coco Crisp. These guys are mostly useless offensive players that play some defense. Willy Taveras got 1100 at bats at roughly a .666 OPS. In 2006, at 24, Brian Anderson got 360 at bats with a .650 OPS and played near gold glove center field...and now we have to throw him in the garbage because he'll never hit? It does SEEM as if Ozzie and KW have written him off...but to set our sights on Taveras with his career .338 OBP as our leadoff man? Or Coco Crisp with his career .329 OBP? What is Timo Perez not available? Juan Pierre? If our options are home-grown horrible or trade for horrible...might as well give our guys a shot. The biggest reason why I think Anderson is a bad option right now is that Anderson spent 3/4 of last season injured. He spent an awful lot of time in AAA playing nothing but DH because he was hurt, then he got back into the field after that injury healed and immediately got hurt again. I hate the idea of giving him up for the nothing that he'd get us back right now, but I can't even fathom going through this offseason without finding another OF if Fields will not be put in LF to start next season.
  13. QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 09:42 AM) That's a fair point...replacing Owens with Crisp might not be the most bang for our buck...however, I feel like Crisp is a better defender, would hit 12-15 more home runs than Owens, and would be set up a nice 1-2 punch with OCabrera. However, there is certainly something to be said for some of the things Owens did in his second call-up. And by the way, I want Crisp for LF, not CF. The last 2 years in Boston, in what a lot of people would consider a hitter's park for most righties, Coco has hit 8 and 6 home runs, respectively.
  14. There is something really, really funny, and really unsurprising about this.
  15. Well, here's what a guy with a vote is saying.
  16. QUOTE(WCSox @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) I don't want any part of Crisp, unless Kenny can somehow get him cheap. I've always liked Taveras and think that he could be a legitimate leadoff hitter (or at least an inexpensive stop-gap). His OBP is a bit lower than I'd like, but I think that his base-stealing ability is enough of an asset to make up for it. Taking away the Coors field effect on his batting average last year, I'm not sure how he's that big of an offensive upgrade from Owens. He doesn't solve the "JO doesn't slug at all" problem, he has a couple more years of service time already, he'll probably steal 40 fewer bases than JO in a full season, he missed 1/2 of last season with injuries, and Owens already is taking more walks than him. His defense is obviously an upgrade from JO...but really how much talent can this team afford to give up for a defensive upgrade?
  17. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 09:13 AM) Owens, Anderson, Dye but we save millions of dollars If Brian Anderson was going to be our CF next year, we might as well have let Dye and Buehrle walk for draft picks. I've been one of his biggest backers the last few years, and even I'll say that this team can not even consider penciling him in to CF next April. If he (or Sweeney) came out and set the world on fire in ST and in AAA for a month, and there's an opening in the OF, then maybe you'd consider bringing them up, but that's a desperation move, and it only really works if there's an injury or if our opening day OF is Fields, Owens, Dye (because Fields can be moved to 3rd base if we decide to create an opening)
  18. QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 08:58 AM) I honestly would be excited about adding Crisp to our OF. However, the OF threesome you mention is certainly not one to get very excited about. I would hope that if we were to add Crisp, we would also look to add a big bat like Andruw Jones. Would you be excited about an OF of Crisp, Jones, Dye? I would.... Honestly, taking into account that we don't have talent to give up to get a guy like Crisp, Owens is cheaper, and the only thing Crisp looks better than Owens in with the bat is slugging, while Owens put up a similar batting average and OBP as a rookie with a disasterous first callup holding his numbers back, I'd be more excited about Owens, Jones, Dye. To my eyes, Crisp seems like pretty much the worst CF option out on the market outside of Cameron. Say what you want about his poor numbers being due to injury the last 2 years...why should I expect he'd be healthier this year?
  19. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 08:37 AM) Well, it looks like Giuliani's decline may steepen soon. A group of firefighters, cops and EMS personnel from FDNY and NYPD are looking to put together a PAC-like 527 group to produce anti-Giuliani ads to run in early primary/caucus states. They apparently want to make sure that people outside NY are aware of just how Giuliani handled them after 9/11 - which, it sounds like, wasn't pretty. Right now, I think Rudy's best bet for a win may actually be Huckabee. Huckabee right now might not have the money to compete on Super Tuesday even if he wins Iowa. Rudy's money may well just carry that day, since Huckabee's lack of funds has forced him to put everything into Iowa. What a Huckabee win in Iowa might do is simply destroy the Romney campaign, because despite the fact that they've got the money to compete for Super Tuesday, they've pumped an awful lot into Iowa also, and a loss there might well kill them.
  20. Does it matter if I think Mark Penn is a jerka** too?
  21. So who else is excited about the prospect of an Owens, Crisp, Dye OF next year?
  22. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 08:32 PM) I forgot about Fukodome... He'd probably be my no. 1 choice as well. After picking up Cabrera to fill the gaping hole we had at #2 in the batting order, I am back to preferring Jones. He'd be more money, but he's also a bigger power bat, he's younger, and he's likely a significantly better defensive CF (Fukudome at least is rumored to be more of a corner OF guy).
  23. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 08:25 PM) He gawn? Mike White took off his redshirt tonight. Either the Xavier game made them realize they need another big man or they need need another player in the rotation in the absense of Crawford. Link
  24. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 08:27 PM) screw Rowand, I want Andruw Jones. I'll add dittos onto preferring Jones.
