  1. Duncan went out with what appears to be a bruised knee and a sprained ankle. Out for quite a while it appears, although it shouldn't cost him the season unless the MRI's today find something worse than that.
  2. QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 08:45 AM) Shame. I really like Chavez. I think this will just prove that he is part of democracy and he was never a dictator. I will be surprised if this winds up being his last attempt to hold onto power.
  3. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 06:56 AM) I'm afraid this might be the case for me too in trying to go to Tempe. I'm still trying though. Finding a cheap flight at that time is my biggest problem in all this. Just realized that I'm within one day driving distance...
  4. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 08:47 PM) Isn't Heath Phillips out of options? Just based on the way he plays baseball he has no value to anyone, being out of options would not help matters. Yes, Heath is out of options, so if he's not on the 25 man at the end of ST he becomes a FA. So, it makes sense for us to deal him for anything we can possibly get if anyone in the league actually has interest
  5. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 03:58 PM) This has been a miserable football game aside from that first drive. The Bears should have buried this team, but Turner's awful play-calling has the Giants down by two points (after this challenge). If they lose this game Turner should be thrown into Lake Michigan. Can Ron Turner make the O-Line suddenly capable of blocking?
  6. QUOTE(jenks45monster @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 04:24 PM) Yes, I am being 100% serious. If the Sox would be able to pull off a trade of Crede for Capuano it will give the Sox a proven veteran starter that they are supposedly seeking. This deal would then put Fields at 3rd. Where exactly did anyone say the Sox were seeking a proven veteran starter? Seriously, I think Gavin Floyd put up better numbers overall last year than Capuano and half of his starts were terrible.
  7. QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 04:10 PM) Do the Mets even have anything close to what the Yankees and Red Sox are offering? This is an honest question. I'm not familiar with their farm system. If they offered up Reyes or Wright they could beat anyone else in MLB. But they're not offering either of those guys.
  8. He was hurt being thrown to the ground by his coach to keep him away from an umpire. Let me repeat that, in case you didn't get it the first time: He was hurt being thrown to the ground by his coach to keep him away from an umpire.
  9. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 02:43 PM) I still don't know why the Mets aren't going after Santana harder. I have no info you don't have, but I imagine it has to relate to the issue of whether or not the Mets are willing to give up something valuable enough to get him in Return. If the Twins are down on Humber/Pelfrey like most people seem to be these days, then aside from Gomez, the only 2 assets the Twins might be interested in are the 2 the Mets will not part with: Reyes and Wright.
  10. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 01:50 PM) Gp. Once that happens, though, I can't imagine the negotiations would take too long. But yikes -- including Hughes, okay. Including two of the three...I just wouldn't do that. If I'm the Yankees, with my financial resources, if I can get a pitcher like Johan, who chews up innings and can absolutely dominate and who is even a lefty (Hi Mr. Ortiz!) and who may very well just cruise to 250 wins with me...and I can do it without giving up my #1 guy (Joba) I would give up anyone else to do it. Esp. if it keeps the Red Sox from getting in the same game. Even without the financial constraints, how many people here would give up everything we have for Cabrera and he's only 1 more year from FA? And now what would happen if you could get him without giving up DLS?
  11. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 01:41 PM) From the Minny Star-Trib, via rotoworld: If the Yanks are actually offering that, I don't see why Santana isn't a Yankee already. Gotta get approval for that 72 hour negotiating window from MLB's offices.
  12. The reports so far said Cabrera, Hughes, and some pitcher less than Kennedy. If that's the new offer, I don't see how the Twins can turn that down.
  13. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 01:18 PM) I understand reluctance to part with players when it is a rent a player or a fifth starter or reliever. But for the best pitcher in the game? There is not a prospect I wouldn't trade to land Santana. Sounds like the Yankees are willing to part with Hughes. If I'm the Twins I jump on that. I think right now the Yanks/Twins are down to haggling over who the 3rd player in the deal will be. They've pretty much established Melky and Hughes and 1 more pitcher of lower quality than Kennedy will be their offer, they just need to figure out that 3rd slot. As for Boston...At some point I guess you have to look at what your needs are. For them, they're looking at Ortiz getting older, Manny hitting FA at the end of 08, Crisp struggling, but a fairly loaded rotation and a solid, signed IF. Their salary constraints are slightly bigger than those of the Yankees, so it might not make as much sense for them to tie down $25 million in 1 pitcher and at the same time give up most of their youth. Santana is great yeah, but is he better than what 3 league minimum players like Ellsbury and Lester will give you in addition to the $20 million they'd have to use to find a replacement for Manny?
  14. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 12:56 PM) Well, from my experience if price is not an issue and I have to pick one I'd go with Grey Goose. It's pretty damn smooth, especially if chilled. However, basically any of the ones that are a step above Smirnoff are decent to good, and I'm not totally sure I could tell the difference between most of them, other than that it's not Smirnoff. Ketel One, Absolut, Skyy, or Svedka are all perfectly acceptable. I've never tried Belvedere (I've heard it's overrated and over-priced), Effen, Level, or interestingly Stolichnaya though. I've actually tried the Belvedere, and I'll totally agree on the overrated/overpriced statement.
  15. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 11:38 AM) Smirnoff is absolutely brutal unless you're mixing drinks with it, and even then I'd prefer other vodkas. There are SOOOO many better ones out there. You might as well go bargain basement and get Gordon's or Burnett's if you're going to do that. I know it's fairly cheap, but if you have to go that route get Svedka. It's a lot smoother and is generally only a couple of bucks more per handle. Do you folks who've been at this longer than me have a favorite wodka wariety? I'm finally getting to the point where I can afford something beyond Gordon's, which is occasionally nice.
  16. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 12:01 PM) Here's a question. Is Schneider that much different than Jose Molina? He's a bit younger but really is there anything else that truly differentiates them. Horrible freaking move by the Mets. I realize Church is a solid player but Milledge has so much more value and the Mets didn't have to panick, they could have found a defensive catcher. I think I agree with you, but I hate hypotheticals enough to respond: who? Who else would have been a better/cheaper fit?
  17. I dunno, I just have no words. I think this short-circuited most of my thought processes.
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 05:54 PM) This is terrible news for the Sox, as this increases the chances of Crisp to the White Sox by about 100 pct. True, that would be terrible news. On the other hand, at least we'll stop hearing people talk about how the Sox should deal for the great Melky Cabrera.
  19. QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 05:52 PM) Looks like the Yanks caved in, and are going to offer Hughes in the Johan deal http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...hes_in_p-2.html If the alternative is him going to the Red Sox, do you really have a choice?
  20. While at Field camp, we took a day in Butte, MT on our way back to camp from Glacier. It was actually Evel Knievel day in Butte that week, because he was from that city. We drove past him up at the Butte mine. Have a great picture of him in full outfit sitting in front of this gigantic scar on the earth. You just wanted him to jump it.
  21. Standoff ends as man surrenders, releases last hostage.
  22. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 02:14 PM) Actually, the question were much more lame for the GOP. What, because media matters (a Democrat political operatous formed by Hillary Clinton), says it was fair? They chose like 3 questions out of all of them to prove that the debate was unbiased. During the GOP debate on CNN there were multiple attempts at a 'gotcha' question. There Dems got issue questions. None if this slop the Democrat plants, which were solicited by CNN, asked. Obviously there is absolutely nothing CNN could ever do which would prove to you that they are pro-dem.. Because this stuff is blatant, Dan Rather forged documents, type stuff. So, the one part of your claim that I haven't yet seen justified to my satisfaction is that the pro dem questions were specifically solicited by CNN. Granting you the whole General in the Audience thing, can you provide any other evidence to support this claim?
  23. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 12:30 PM) Any operation to rescue someone in a situation like that, IMO, has no choice but to go all the way with the hardware in hand. And that is exactly why I don't think such an operation is sound/justified. Going into a foreign country in arms? It could turn out well (Israel raid on Entebbe), but it's probably more likely, even with technology and so on, to turn into a Desert One or a Battle of Mogadishu, depending on what you send in. If they seriously want to try this person, I can't see how a military solution is the appropriate response. There have to be other diplomatic options, if we care enough to use them. Usually though, we don't, because we like money and that's more important to us. (IIRC, China has thought to be one of the key players with Sudan in terms of stopping the Darfur mess. But we can't use, you know, our trade with China to encourage them to step in, because that'd cost us money.)
  24. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 12:17 PM) While I don't at all see this as "with us or against us", I would support an operation to get her out. For that matter, I think a good response would be to not just pull her out, but pull some other ties back as well, making it clear that such a reaction is not tolerable. I think a cutback in ties is entirely appropriate. Possibly trade sanctions, no idea how much trade is left with that country though. But here's my counterpoint question...what happens if some guard resists an operation to pull this person out? How much bloodshed would you tolerate? 1 death? 10? 100?
