  1. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 09:01 AM) I didn't mean signing an SP. I mean trading for one, using PK more than likely. Well, then on top of that, I really have trouble thinking of SP's that a team interested in Konerko would be willing to give up. Clearly we're not getting Kershaw for him, the Dodgers might consider moving Billingsly but he'd probably have his price inflated by their need for starting pitching, any of the young guys from the Angels are a bit of a risk and are either not yet ready or have struggled a lot recently (Adenhart/Santana), and beyond that, I have trouble thinking of a team in need of a 1b bat that has an obvious starting pitcher to give up.
  2. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 08:57 AM) That all said, the Sox cannot afford to wait those 2 weeks. They need to get a CF and probably an SP right quick. There continues to be fewer than zero starting pitchers on this FA market I'd actually be interested in seeing on the White Sox next year. Kyle Lohse at 3/$30, that'll save us!
  3. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 08:28 PM) My hope is that Kenny turns, decides to just find a leadoff guy and than goes all out to add one to two young starting pitchers that he likes (he can also swing Paulie for a bevy of solid young position players). Other than Juan Pierre, who would you say is available as a leadoff guy?
  4. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 08:25 PM) I would hope he outbids the Cubs for Fukudome and then uses the rest of the offseason adding pitching. Carlos Silva, 5/$60, here we go, that's a title contender right there!
  5. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 07:36 PM) The sox should just post 40 yard dash times after acquisitions. Ok, I'm starting the "Hester to the Sox" thread now.
  6. QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 07:20 PM) No, you gotta hit in this division-so, we cant have guys like Richar, and Owens playing now Oh that's just bull. We can't have guys like Richar playing why? Because he's a rookie? We need veterans at every position to keep up? The other teams, like Cleveland, Minny, and yes, Detroit, are good teams because they've taken talented youngsters exactly like Richar and given them room to adapt to the big league game. Would you say that Cleveland can't compete in this division because they stuck with guys like Garko, A. Cabrera, and Franklin Gutierrez and those guys will never hit because they're too young?
  7. QUOTE(BearSox @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:51 PM) If Roberts is available, for as much as I like Richar, we should go hard after Roberts. If this team trades Cunningham for Richar, and then immediately blocks Richar, then this organization is truly a mess.
  8. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:32 PM) Just throwing things out here, Pie, Soto, and Marmol would be a good start for the best pitcher in baseball. The Twins really don't need a catcher.
  9. QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:26 PM) 2008 Playoffs American League NYY BOS DET LAA book it I don't know which one it will be, but just by random chance, I'll give you big odds that at least 1 of those 4 teams won't make it.
  10. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:16 PM) I realize we are talking about the Cubs here, but why aren't they making a play for Johan. They get 3 milllion sheep every year, now second highest ticket prices. The Cubs would dominate the NL for years with Johan. But I guess that makes too much sense. Instead, they spend money on a guy that has never played an inning in mlb. Who would the Cubs have that would spark Minny's interest on the level of a Hughes/Cabrera combo from NYY? Felix Pie obviously, but beyond that, I don't think Hill or Marshall would catch the Twins interest, they don't exactly have a place to play Soto, they've lost a ton of draft picks the last couple years by signing so many FA's so their lower levels aren't exactly stocked, I don't see how the Cubs could even come up with as good of a deal as we could for the Twins.
  11. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 04:56 PM) The big ten is pretty weak this year. Am I the only one who feels like he hears that exact line every single year?
  12. QUOTE(Chombi @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:53 PM) I hope dominant you just mean the side of the ball we have a surplus in. If not, I am confused as to the thinking. You know, I'm not sure at all why I picked that word. I probably meant to say "Deep". Dah well, i'm Distracted.
  13. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:52 PM) Nate Roberston 30. You are correct, sir. Anyway, he still has a career ERA of 4.60.
  14. QUOTE(loltrain @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:46 PM) So if the Tigers only have one good pitcher that means the White Sox have 0, right? The Tigers rotation certainly isn't spectacular, but with a healthy Bonderman it should certainly be at least league average, which with the offense will be plenty to make the playoffs (barring injury which admittedly is a weakness of the team) Once you get into the playoffs the idea that you have to have great pitching is just laughable, it's all a crap shoot relying on luck, Johan Santana could get shelled and Jeff Weaver and Jose Contreras could turn into aces. Was Bonderman not healthy last year? I didn't read anything about health issues for him last year, just mainly issues with giving up runs. That rotation certainly has it in it to be well below league average. They also have it in them to be well above league average. Willis could act like he did in 04 and dominate, or he could act like he did in 07 and flounder even worse in the AL. The Bonderman of 06 could show up or the Bonderman of 07 could show up. Rogers is a year older and missed half last season, and Robertson is in his 40's too. And with Zumaya gone, their bullpen is back to being suspect, even if they go out and blow money on someone like Gagne.
  15. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:40 PM) Sounds like the '06 and '07 Yankees. And the 05 Yankees. And the 04 Yankees. And while I'm at it, the 03 and 05 Red Sox.
  16. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) From ESPN (and Steve Phillips so TIFWIW): Could the Sox top this? Would they want to? If they're including Gomez, that would be hard for us to top. Fields, Quentin, and maybe Gio might top that, depending on how high they are on Gio. But then we'd be giving up an awful lot of position players (i.e. the side of the ball we're weak on) for a very good pitcher (i.e. the side of the ball we're dominant on).
  17. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) They have a guy names Luis Pena I would like to have. A fireballer. Somehow I doubt it but I will wait and see. Crede to the Brewers for a year makes sense for the Crew. Yeah, we need some freaking fireballers in our bullpen. I'm sick of this weak armed stuff, that killed us in 2006. Let's go into 2007 with our bullpen able to throw some serious heat! Oh wait, sorry, that post got lost in the internet for a year. If the kid has talent, then it's a good idea, but just because he throws fire doesn't mean he's a guaranteed success story.
  18. QUOTE(quickman @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:21 PM) Well Tony whether its 5 or 4 or 3 or 2 years, who cares, they will spend the money and the sox won't. They are better than us, and will remain that way for some time. Furthermore I am not bitter, but being somewhat realistic. People with more years also have more history. They have heard and seen more. Right now, the sox are failing in whatever plan they had. I hope you do well in school one day you too will be an adult and be called bitter. The Sox won't spend the money? What? Even counting what we got back for Thome and Vazquez, the Sox have still outspent the Tigers each of the last few years.
  19. QUOTE(quickman @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) Sign andrew Jones - Play him in center Sign fukomdome - Play him in left trade for ryan freel- Play him at second and lead off or he can help play the oufield as a backup. Sign or trade for a veteran number 4 or 5 starter, as a back up to your kid pitchers. Trade Crede and uribe and focus on bullpen arms in return. And Quentin does what? Sit down at AAA?
  20. QUOTE(spiderman @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) I'm one of those who don't see much hope. Fields could hit 30 HR's, Richar could hit .280, Denks could get 14 wins, and we still have major holes in our rotation because Contreras sucks, and the #5 will too. Well, we can only pin so much on September and August stats, but I still find some solace in the fact that both Contreras and Floyd performed quite well come September and for Jose, August as well. And I still like the depth we have in having Gio and Egbert as other options... But at least we'll see. I know one thing, this is the thread I'll be digging up if somehow the White Sox go on a hot streak early in the season.
  21. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:18 PM) I think we need him, fields, richar and one of the young pitchers to break out to at least their respective levels of major league talent for us to compete. That's why I scoff when people say things like "no hope." Its possible, there's hope, its just very unlikely. I wouldn't say "Very unlikely". The odds aren't in favor of that happening, but it's certainly not beyond the realm of possibilities. This trade makes the Tigers offense more potent, but makes their pitching staff more questionable. As far as the White Sox are concerned, they're exactly where they were before hand: The performance of that team will be entirely determined by Buehrle, Vazquez, Contreras, Floyd, and Danks.
  22. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 04:29 PM) And inge just ruined any trade value Crede had. Is it possible the Tigers will be thinking about moving him back to C to compensate for when they let Pudge walk next offseason?
  23. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 02:22 PM) And what about the rumors of Gasol not fitting into Iavaroni's uptempo system. Thomas + Nocioni + future 1st for Gasol? Well, Nocioni couldn't be traded for another week and a half.
  24. QUOTE(FlaCWS @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 03:20 PM) I totally agree. People keep saying Cabrera is a "legitimate star." So were Carlos Lee and Magglio Ordonez, and the Sox won the WS the year after dumping both of them. Pitching and defense always wins. This will be great for the box office, but in the long term not so great for winning another title. Just my opinion. It could well be great for them winning another title. But it's certainly no guarantee like so many people here seem to think it is. Why is it that if the White Sox acquired D-Train for 1/2 of its farm system, we'd have people whining about how KW acquired a pitcher near FA who put up a >5 ERA last year in the weak NL, but this Tigers team is going to dominate with him!!!
  25. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 03:10 PM) Compare the Yanks pitching staff over the last few years to the one that the Tigers trot out and reassess the issue. Verlander Willis Rogers Bonderman Robertson Only 1 guy on that list had an ERA under 4.4 last year, and that was Verlander. That supposedly dominant staff sure struggled one hell of a lot last year outside of Verlander.
