QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 09:52 AM) Not sure what my favorite deal is (probably the Eaton deal considering the haul of 3 major prospects), but I don't love this NYY deal, it's confusing to me, wish JR would have ate the money thus keeping Kahnle and not having to take on Clippard, I find it hard to believe D=Rob and Frazier bring back Clarkin and Polo, D-Rob should bring back a guy on the back 50 of the Top 100 at least I very much disagree with this and if I were an opposing GM I would not have given up a top 100 prospect for Robertson unless the White Sox took on much of his contract.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 07:55 AM) The probably weren't but they should have been. Quintana is a near perfect player for them - excellent pitcher and cost controlled. They run the risk of letting their prospects rot on the vine. Heck Hanson already did, to the Sox benefit. I totally agree with you and I said at the time both Pittsburgh and Houston were stupid to not be in on that player. I wish them best of luck with the guys they have and hope they in the end are satisfied with how this season turns out. -
QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) 1. How is that different than the "Haha, we got those idiots. The guy we gave up is a bust and the guy we got is awesome." 2. So the value of Robertson and Frazier, both of whome other teams wanted, was Clarkin, Polo, and having to take on Clippard? When you take the contracts into account, I don't think that's all that far off. I think we got a slightly better prospect for Kahnle because of them, but that's kinda true. Take a look at the D-Backs trade for Martinez and the Nationals trade for the A's bullpen and then remember that Robertson is paid 2x as much as Madson, and that's not far from the current market for those guys.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 03:45 AM) July performance much better than June. The wrist/hand injury really set him back but he learned to play through it. That's 50-75% of the reason for his mid year slump right there. His batting average is higher in July than June but his OPS in July is down from June slightly, his K-rate is worse in July than June, and his BB rate has cratered in July compared to June. His July performance offensively is worse than his June performance.

QUOTE (Steve226 @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 09:31 AM) Everything I've seen so far is they're claiming Moncada will be playing 3rd tonight.... but why? Idiocy? Whether that's by the sportswriters or by the White Sox we'll see. Sanchez and Saladino should take over 3b and Moncada should be the starting 2b when he's in the lineup.

QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) Do people realize they are doing to Kahnle what we hate other fanbases for doing to their prospects after they are traded? Acting like he sucks and will be a bust even though there have been multiple articles about how Kahnle is one of the best relievers in the game. "He sucks and will be a bust and was totally worth one of the top 50 prospects in the game".

QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 09:25 AM) Even if he is the next Andrew Miller he's gone after next season. And what more could the Sox really have gotten for him next year? Rutherford is now where Torres was last deadline, I doubt they get more for him next deadline than Rutherford. Robertson and Frazier for Clarkin and Polo is a wash. In the MLB.com list, Rutherford comes in at #30. When he was traded for Miller last year, Frazier was the #15 prospect in the MLB.com list. So maybe with a completely dominant full extra year they could have gotten more than Rutherford...but hey, Rutherford's in A ball, if he has a good 2nd half he'll move up the lists too.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 09:18 AM) FanGraphs article yesterday included a chart showing a constant increase in velocity from his first MLB appearance in 2014 up to now. If you show his "average fastball", then his velocity increses. If you show his game by game results it looks like this. The ranges look like they stack on top of each other so I think his maximum was always just about the same (with the notable exception of him crossing 100 a couple times this year). A couple statistical things to keep in mind - he's thrown a lot more innings this year so he'd be likely to hit 100 more just by random chance, and if previously he was struggling with fastball control he still may have topped out at 98 but 99 but constantly tried "taking something off the fastball to try to throw more strikes".

QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 11:17 PM) Weird timing. It's after the super-2 time would be hit for him and there's a roster spot clear. So it's imposed by the big leagues. What I don't like is that it isn't forced by Moncada, it's imposed by big league calendar schedule and his name. He's not getting called up because he's earned it.
-
For reference...I don't hate calling him up right now as much as I have a couple of our previous callups, but I don't like it. I don't feel he's earned it yet. His splits away from Charlotte are poor, his numbers overall aren't where I'd want them to be, his OPS has dropped month by month and there's been no improvement in his K-rates (may have even gotten worse).

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 11:00 PM) Fair enough. But you are criticizing a guy that has done it in the big leagues against a guy in A ball. Seems a bit ironic. That's the game we're playing now. We are loading up on cards and hoping that a couple of ours wind up being kings and aces. The Yankees are playing a different game - they need a guy to continue winning coin flips after winning a coin flip this year. I don't think I'd have been thrilled with a return for either Robertson or Frazier, so using them to max out Kahnle's value now makes me happy.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 10:56 PM) This is likely the best system we have ever had. Yippee. That gets you aboslutely jack s*** nothing. Am I excited? Of course! But that doesn't mean you just handwave away a huge asset that we just moved to get basically one solid prospect. Maybe I am underwhelmed by Clarkin, and I hope I am. But IMO, Kahnle himself was worth close to Rutherford himself. While Robertson is due some money, he's a dependable, solid closing option. I don't like the addition of Clarkin to bundle two pretty outstanding relievers together. Rutherford is still in high A ball afterall. I fully disagree there. Rutherford, even with a bit of polish removed this year, was worth substantially more than Kahnle alone and making use of the other 2 pieces to make that happen, plus getting 2 smaller pieces back, is something I find myself content with. If I'm giving up Rutherford for a reliever I want a longer track record, plain and simple.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 10:47 PM) Is there one person here who thinks we got fleeced? There's some negative reaction on the overall deal(if the 4th player is who is rumored) but nobody here has freaked out even a little bit about the deal. Seems pretty level headed around here for the most part. Earlier today I said that my goal if I traded Kahnle this year was a top 100 prospect. I thought he might get to being worth a top 50 prospect on his own next year, but that is a risky move. In other words...by adding Robertson and Frazier, they upgraded what I thought Kahnle would bring back from a top 100 prospect to a top 50 prospect, with then 2 other pieces added in. I consider that to be fair value for Robo + Frazier.

QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 07:38 PM) He's been scuffling as of late and is facing Kershaw. All we really have to go on is Bruce Levine, who knows nothing. He was in the lineup an hour before the game batting 4th, so there must have been something for him to be "pulled". That could have been a personal thing - blowup behind the scenes or something like that, but nearly ready to be traded is most likely. If a guy is scuffling and you're giving him the day off you don't pull him an hour beforehand, you tell him the day before so he goes and gets some extra rest and isn't getting himself up for the game during BP.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 07:29 PM) That would not be good business. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 07:31 PM) If the Yankees offer something better Hahn is obliged to take it. If the Yankees put in a call after Hahn had said yes but before it was approved by the league, then accepting that would be bad business. If the Red Sox put an offer on the table Hahn would accept and Hahn bided his time then came back an hour later and said yes after making a couple calls...that's risky but fair practice.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 07:15 PM) This may be a dumb question, but do relievers normally hang out in the clubhouse and not in the bullpen this early in the game? Yes. Sometimes a few of them will start down there on a "throwing day" when they know they don't have to work, but you will often see the bullpen crew walk down to the pen and begin getting loose in the middle innings.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 06:55 PM) So the ceiling on this deal, in terms of any one guy coming back, is Groome, you guys think? Well almost by definition if we're trading with the Red Sox that's the best guy we are going to get, because we are not getting Devers and Groome is their #2 prospect. Standard note inserted here including skepticism about Groome. That would be massive overpay unless lots of money from ChiSox.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 06:46 PM) Don't get me wrong, he should be traded no matter what, but after looking at the JD Martinez trade I'm not all that optimistic what the package will be. I'll be surprised if we get any of their top 15 prospects If Robertson is involved also, then we will. That's the trick here. I would also not be surprised if the White Sox were sending some cash along with those 2 somehow.
