  1. If the clause in the CBA was unchanged, then they could do with both of them what was done with Viciedo. If arbitration is offered and a contract is agreed upon, the contract was non-guaranteed until the opening day of the regular season. If the player was cut before the regular season started, the cost was $25k. Offering arb could give the option to keep and trade them later or keep and play them through ST and hold them in case someone got hurt. The reasons why the team might not do that - they could really not like Lawrie and just not want him around the organization at any cost, they could really like both these guys personally but just be done with them on baseball matters and want them to have an offseason chance to sign elsewhere, or they could really want the spots on the 40 man.
  2. Jim Cornelison is doing the anthem tomorrow night at Assembly Hall.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 29, 2016 -> 06:55 PM) It's being reported that PA has not been prepping their players for lock out (as seen in NFL or NBA recently where there was a lot of chatter about saving for a protracted lockout), Knowing that, feel like PA will cave and bridge whatever gap is left. Aren't players paid at the end of months? If so, the PA has what, 5 months until the first paychecks don't arrive for anything that isn't a signing bonus, end of April?
  4. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Nov 29, 2016 -> 06:01 PM) Has nothing to do with being a Sox fan. They are paying Cespedes like he is one of the best in the game when he is not even close to being one of the best in the game. Not to mention the fact that he has been wildly inconsistent year to year. He will be the 3rd highest paid position player this coming year despite coming in 61st in fWAR among position players last year. Paying Yoenis Cespedes $27.5M as a 35 year old is something I would want no part of no matter whom I am a fan of. The problem is - they're paying Cespedes as high of a yearly value as anyone in the game, but they're also paying him fair value for a 3.2 fWAR player on the open market. Both of these things can be simultaneously true given that the value of 1 WAR keeps going up.
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 29, 2016 -> 03:07 PM) It's justifiable because the Mike Trouts of the world aren't going to free agency anymore. Your ability to find proven talented players is limited, so you have to pay more. And the AAV isn't as bad when only over 4 years, compared to toher 6 or 7 year deals. I don't know what Mike Trout will get in FA, but it's going to be interesting after 2018 because there's a shot we'll get the preview when Harper and Machado have a chance to hit FA.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 29, 2016 -> 11:05 AM) I have had plenty of issues with Trump and the GOP in general. In fact for the second election in a row I didn't vote for their Presidential candidate. I also didn't vote for their governor's candidate. I also have a problem with the Democrats and their lies/games as well. That is the difference between you and I. I am not falling on the partisan lines for my talking points. Irrelevant non-sequitors in an effort to trap someone into an internet win moment? Eh, sure. You keep winning the internet, but falling into line for the sake of "your party". Except for right now, when you're happy to float a conspiracy theory because your gut tells you so. You're more than happy to play those games as long as you don't get called on it.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 29, 2016 -> 11:42 AM) Because when "your party" does it, no one blinks, and makes excuses to justify it. So, you'd find an issue with someone floating an unsubstantiated conspiracy theory and then pointing across the aisle saying "look they do it too!" as justification for why it's ok?
  8. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 28, 2016 -> 04:27 PM) Its bizarre I agree, but we have seen the replays of all of it. Sitton, Long, Goldman, White all got rolled up. Trevathan iirc got hit in the pile. Floyd brained himself on another guys hip. Wilson broke his foot in like the first day of preseason practice running. Fuller, who knows I dont know what to say but it isnt like everyone is out due to soft tissue injuries. Everything happening this season has been legit bad luck. Its f***ed up I can't get 2014 or 2013 data to load here this morning, but per this site the Bears are in the top 5 in injured reserve losses both of the last 2 years, but not at the top either year.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2016 -> 12:31 PM) Knowing the Clinton history of playing behind the scenes I think it is much more likely that a surrogate put Stein up to starting the process so that Hillary's campaign could have a cover to jump on it with some plausible deniability built into the process. I find it amazing that Stein was able to get not only the money, but the publicity to raise the money after being essentially ignored the entire electoral process. How does that happen? Because your party nominated a white supremacist for the white house who does nothing but peddle unsubstantiated conspiracy theories, like you're doing right now, and people are panicked by the prospect?
  10. So, scrolling through this thread after working for a day...that was a useless line of 5 posts with nothing really in them but links to stuff I've read elsewhere. No commentary, nothing of interest.
  11. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Nov 29, 2016 -> 11:05 AM) Holy crap, that's the key? Just get GOOD players? Why the hell haven't we been doing this all along? "I'm not sure, but I still like the paychecks!"
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 26, 2016 -> 05:12 PM) It's paranoid conspiracy nuts all the way down Up! Wrong direction.
  13. QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Nov 26, 2016 -> 03:27 PM) Winning isn't easy. IT ISN'T ABOUT THE CUBS. It's about being open minded and trying something new. I'm willing to bet you're in the category of people on here who want to keep going for it again too. Or trade Sale and Frazier then keep going for it in half-ass White Sox style. I swear some people want to keep banging their heads against the wall and losing instead of using new and different ideas with an open mind. Joe Maddon just so happens to be on the Northside of Chicago. I'd be saying the same thing if he was still in Tampa (where he was also highly successful with a lot less talent). Again, I didn't suggest to do it with your whole team. One of the mentioned players in Bregman isn't even on our team, and Sanchez is likely to be a bench player anyway. When Zack Collins comes up we damn well better use him as a 1B/C/DH and maybe even LF if we keep him at catcher, to keep his bat legit. Look how quick Joe Mauer became irrelevant and an awful contract by staying behind the plate strictly. Buster Posey's OPS+ have fallen every single year the past 5. At the same time though - Buster Posey won 3 world series championships while still on his rookie deal and the Twins won the AL Central 3 of 5 years between 2006 and 2010 with Mauer still under his rookie control. Yes, without steroids catchers take a beating, but a major bat at the catching position can be a huge difference maker - a big boost in OPS out of that slot makes up for a lot of weakness elsewhere in your lineup. And if he's only an average bat at the catching position rather than an MauerVP level bat, if you can work him up into a solid defender then an average bat at the catching spot with average defense is a really good player.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 26, 2016 -> 02:59 PM) Would anybody really be surprised if Hillary is deemed winner of the states where voting was so close? https://www.yahoo.com/news/jill-stein-raise...-170320584.html Yes. Completely and utterly.
  15. That article is referring to our new deputy National Security Advisor.
  16. Guess who is no longer interested in high level officials and email security? I will give you a hint, they campaigned on how unacceptable any security violations were... This is the exact reason I couldn't vote for these hypocrites. http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/th...ecurity-adviser
  17. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Nov 24, 2016 -> 12:25 AM) Well there's the excuse I've been waiting for to explain not trading Sale! Not only are we held down by our own management, but now the CBA, owners, union delegates are all conspiring against the Sox when we're poised to change our future (and direction) with perhaps the most significant trade of our generation. Oh, I know.....it's justifiable to hold off, teams are uncertain, etc. I was expecting more of the, market never materialized like we wanted excuse Atleast this CBA nonsense will either be resolved or not by Dec 1st Not just holding off from us, no team would reasonably make their best offer without knowing the leagues compensation structure or how much Sale would bring in as compensation in 2019. This is one I cannot blame Hahn for not getting done yet.
  18. QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Nov 24, 2016 -> 12:47 AM) Interestingly bad, in my opinion. Lots of moves like the Sox have been known to make in the past (hopefully). They're definitely trying to win in 2017 and 2018 at any cost. They're about in the position of the 2012 white sox, except they have more resources to add stuff other than Keppinger. It could work....if Cano, Hernandez, and Cruz don't turn into Konerko and company and get old.
  19. QUOTE (shipps @ Nov 23, 2016 -> 04:22 PM) I am not saying that you limit yourself and say you definitely will not consider unloading much of the team but you also shouldnt be so narrowed minded to think that that is the only way of rebuilding. I think one thing to get caught up in as a fan is that we dont trust the FO to rebuild a team in doing it any other way than what is an obvious rebuild like unloading every player at one time. Instead of being open to unload any player anywhere down the line if the value is what we are looking for. Maybe that is a valid fear but I am trying to keep an open mind that there are alternative ways to rebuilding and it doesnt have to be such a philosophical proclamation that they have to make to pacify a fan base. They need to grow some balls and have their own plan of rebuilding and execute it. I can make what appears to be an equally valid case that "growing some balls and having their own plan" could mean telling the Chairman the truth - that this won't be easy even if it's the right way to do it, and trying to force a 2 year plan onto it could make things far worse.
  20. Apparently my current school gets this Spencer nazi's next public appearance just after Thanksgiving! yay!
  21. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 23, 2016 -> 02:27 PM) Too bad that couldn't happen when we needed to add guys to the 40. Oh well I don't think of them will even be drafted. That open spot can now be used to select someone in the rule 5, right?
  22. QUOTE (shipps @ Nov 23, 2016 -> 02:57 PM) I totally wasnt suggesting that but I can see how it might have come across as that. I was just speaking in terms of everyone wanting a complete tear down because they think its the only way to rebuild. Part of the reason why people would consider dumping everyone of value is in fact, as you say, they are acknowledging the White Sox's limitations. The White Sox have payroll limitations that keep them from throwing huge amounts of money at Harper/Machado in a couple years. The White Sox have a poor history of developing players. The White Sox have one of the worst systems in baseball and have for years. Those are the White Sox's limitations. So if they do only a quick "we can turn this around in 2 years" move, acquire 4-5 guys for Sale, fail to move Frazier/Cabrera, etc., and a couple of the guys they get back for Sale or one of their top draft picks busts, then they still are totally outgunned because they tried to make things happen in 2 years and their limitations prevented them from doing so.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 23, 2016 -> 12:33 PM) Or vice versa it could be an effort on the part of a team like Boston to say they would rather take on a Shield versus giving up a guy like Moncada. Another alternative - this gives a team like Texas, which may not have the system resources Boston does, a way to keep talking to the White Sox.
